Yes ma'am! My mom and granny would make the jack mackerel quite often. I think one reason it was cheaper than the salmon (or simon as my granny called it). I still cook them to this day and love them with fried potatoes, pinto or mixed beans over cornbread, green onions, sliced tomatoes from the garden and beet pickles my mom had canned. Good old fashioned cooking that could feed a family economically.
Yum! Hello from New Zealand. This is best mackerel pattie tutorial I've ever found. They were absolutely delicious. Next time, I mixed it up a little bit - using breadcrumbs for binding, and included some chopped chives with grated cheddar cheese. Fried in EVOO oil. Soooo good. Thank you for sharing your family recipe with everyone. God bless.
Girl BYE! You have brought back some memories from my childhood. Where are you from/grew up? MUST be from down south!!! Because you got the LEGIT MACKEREL RECIPE! Mackerels & Rice & the Molasses, 🤣! GONE girl!! you DID that! My mama passed when I was young so I've never made them. I am making these today for my family. Thanks for the recipe. Happy subscriber! Thanks.
Thanks Miss Brenda for bringing back memories of good food and family of my childhood. Mackeral pattys, mashed potatoes, gravy, homemade bisquits, green beans or homimy fresh sliced vegetables ice tea. Eight people around the table, with that many conversations going on at the same time. I was glad to provide the same experience for our four 4 kids. Suppertime was at the table, no television playing, and the ringer on the phone shut off. Family time with no interruptions except the occasional visitor who would show up and we would invite them to share. It's funny how a smell or menton of a food can bring back such memories. Great video Mame. Thank you.
I will have to try them like this. I usually use white corn meal mixed in with the flour. And a egg for each can. I eat mines with some smothered potatoes biscuits and Alaga syrup. Or rice and biscuits
Hello Ms Brenda those patties look delicious thank you for bringing back memories for me when my mom use to make them I sure do miss her Have a blessed day 🙏🏾♥️
Good morning Ms Brenda Dee, Mama use to make mackerels, syrup and biscuits it was such a delightful meal, thanks for the memories, good ole fashion cooking May God continue blessing you and your family ❤
Blessings to you and your family, Ms Brenda Dee! When watching most of your videos, I sometimes think that you must have lived on my street (road) growing up in East MS! My mother's recipe was nearly identical to yours, sometimes she would skip the cornmeal and just use flour, guess it depended on what was in the cupboard. I make these maybe once a month or so and my daughter loves them and occasionally tells me, "Dad, these taste just like Grandma's"! Sometimes I spruce them up with a small portion of old bay and a hint of dill weed but mostly stick with the basic recipe. I also make my salmon patties the same way and have tried canned tuna this way as well. Thank you for sharing and keeping our recipes alive.
Thanks so much Mrs. Brenda, bought mackeral today for the first time( didn't know it was different from salmon lol) but now that I'm following you. I should be good!! Thanks again, and continue to bless the grandkids with your delicious food!! 😋
I like my Patties with white rice and mustard. I use a little more flour, more like half and half. Sometimes I add green bell pepper as well but these look good and I will certainly be trying them your way. Thanks for sharing!
They look delicious. The way your mom served them is how my grandmother would. My daughter like them with mashed potatoes and greens. Have a great day!
Always a pleasure to be with you in the kitchen and watching you make some amazing dishes and sharing your sweet memories with your mom..we truly miss them but are blessed with those times past. Much Love to you and your precious family 😇🙏
I recall most of the time having them for breakfast with grits (at Grandma's with bisquits and molasses). My mother occasionally, made them for dinner and served them with creamed corn and biscuits (molasses or jelly). I halfway recall them being breaded with cornmeal. I'm over 60 so my memory may be wrong but I think I remember my mother and grandmother put the cornmeal in the mixture before forming them and lightly powdering with flour before frying them.
These bring back sooooo many memories for me too! We would have them with biscuits and good ole cane syrup!! Mmmmm Mmmmmm Good!! Thanks for the memory!! Love your recipes!!
😊😊 DELICIOUS!!! Still a favorite in my household! I fix mashed potatoes, sweet 🌽, and some green beans or peas (my fav is spinach with eggs n hot sauce).

Hello 👋🏽, Many blessings to you and your family! I love mackerel cakes, actually I made scramble mackerel and onions on Tuesday morning with some hot grits! My mother always made delicioTVus salmon cakes, but can salmon have gotten so expensive, I use mackerel now! 😂🙏🏽🌹

Thank you for showing us this recipe. Ive been trying to remember the way my mother did these. Everything from the through mixture, seasonings, flour, diced onions, Coating with the cornmeal. Shaping, and frying. Are SO On point. Thank you, thank you, Very much. I like these with rice and scrambled eggs. Or as a little snack sandwich on a biscuit or bread, with a little mayo and hot sauce. And you can tell from your technique, The onions be cooked tender on the insides. (Even though I wish you would break one open so we can see)👀😋 👍🏿👌🏿🙏🏿
Yes ma'am!!! I would eat this with potatoes, biscuits, and sugar syrup. Just watching this and hearing your story about how you ate Jack Mackerel brought back so many memories! Thank you. Now, I got to make some for myself ❤❤
That is a wonderful recipe! Thanks for the video. I am going to use "Avocado oil" instead of vegetable oil. I found that vegetable oil will cause inflammation in the arteries and joints! I will also use organic flour and organic corn meal. We have to have good health too!
I love making mackerel patties. I do one can of mackerel and remove the bones. Saute up some diced onion and green bell pepper in some grass fed butter. Once the veggies are soft, remove from heat. Mash up the Mackerel, add the veggies, a teaspoon or so of Old bay spice, 2 eggs or 6 quail eggs, ground pepper, seasoned homemade fine breadcrumbs which have oregano, dill, basil, smoked paprika, pepper, redmond real salt, and a few teaspoons of finely grated hard parmesan cheese. Form into 5 patties and fry in Avocado oil. I've also put them in the air fryer as well. Cook til golden brown and serve over brown rice with green onions and kale and some currant jam. Yummy delicious. I no longer use any of the seed oils that are popular at the grocery stores.
Ohhhh Ms. Brenda Dee, your going to make me go in the kitchen and make me some Jack Mackerel’s. It’s been a while. Yours look so delicious ❤. We used to make our own sugar syrup and biscuits too!
I remember those Mackrels from back in the day and homemade sugar syrup. I made sugar syrup 2 weeks ago, and it brought back memories of my mama. I like the Mackrels better than Salmon.
