      Firefox (and the Gecko rendering engine) is actually the only real alternative to Chrome these days. Because while you do have a few alternatives in Edge, Brave, Opera and Safari they are all using the same rendering engine (Blink) as Chrome under the hood.
      For that reason Firefox is more important than ever.
      (Technically Safari is using a different rendering engine, WebKit, but that essentially an old version of Blink.)

      Containers don't do THAT much. Unless you run them as isolated profiles alltogether. What counts is baton passing (fingerprinting). Firefox sucks at that. What you really need is browser isolation. The container addon on Firefox hardly does anything. But, Firefox hides something more invasive. A really sneaky piece of s;;;t software. That's MITI. That was a very useful tutorial. One question about "containers": Are the containers to keep data in or out? What is the potential threat? Also, at the very end of the video, you were illustrating the FF toolbar, and you showed "create folder". Could you please explain why we would want / need to create a folder? Thanks again for an informative video.

    • @River-zo6ve
      @River-zo6ve 2 роки тому +3

      You can think of containers almost as being different Firefox profiles - scripts in one container don't have access to data in other containers. Not sure what kind of threat you're imagining, but just using containers at all is an improvement, even if used poorly.

    I appreciate that you are trying to cover a lot of details quickly. But by not reading aloud the 'labels' on the features you're whipping through at dizzying speed many of us are only getting half of the instructions 'cuz we don't know what the function you are setting is called. One must go through this stopping at each 'unknown', try to identify it and then set it. OK, but the 'view' of the screen you're showing is 'just readable' and I'm using 'full screen' mode on a 27in monitor @ 1920x1080p. People seeing this on 13in or 15in laptop screens aren't likely to get much of the text without stopping & magnifying the video, etc.,etc. Hence the recommendation to speak the labels for the features you're adjusting. You should watch this video as a 'newbie'; you'll see what I mean.

    Personally, I don't bother with deleting history/cookies because it also disconnects me from several websites I use on a regular basis. For example, every time I close my browser and re-open it to check my Gmail account, I have to open my password manager, put in the credentials of said account, go and grab my phone, input the SMS code I just received (2-step verification), and then I can log in. I have to do this through different websites, every time history/cookies are deleted.
    I'm used to closing my browser on a regular basis (because sometimes I'm gaming and I want minimal stuff in the background hogging resources) and this can become a veritable pain in the rear to do all the time. So if you're like me, leave these two options alone unless you're in an unsafe location or need to share your device with someone else.

    luckily enough a lot of firefox add-ons have their source available on github. personally i wouldnt install anything that didnt have its source available because ive heard a few stories where developers of close sourced add-ons get offered big money to add tracking stuff to their code

    Firefox is a privacy nightmare. The settings you check in the menu to ensure said privacy don't actually do what they're supposed to. Take fingerprinting for example even if you check strict tracking protection on the desktop version go to about:config and look for privacy.resistfingerprint it will be set to false...soooooo......... As of 8/27/20 they have eliminated the about:config for the mobile version which basically eliminates privacy and being non monetized. Other privacy issues such as indicating in the settings you don't want autocomplete/search suggestions as you type is ignored (turn it off and try typing amaz it will auto complete to amazon.com), the push for you to add everything to top sites or home page and to sync your tabs all while burying addons under several layers of menus. And it's ugly. They've turned private browsing to the same purple as TOR to try to mislead users into associating it with TOR, among a whole host of other d!@k moves. Make no mistake they are out to monetize you, your privacy is the last thing on their list.

    Interesting but i ended up a bit confused on some points:
    - So your trusted browser is FF but at the same time you don't trust it.
    - On my smartphone i have Google Chrome, Kiwi Browser (for specific purposes) and FF but i didn't get used yet to the new FF version. Anyway imagine that you are out of home and REALLY need to access from your smartphone some bookmark you have on your FF mac; if you don't use the account/sync option, you can't access it (you can create some security options for this, like a master password, 2-step verification).
    - You say that you don't use WhatsApp (in terms of privacy, i think Signal app is better but people are too much used to WhatsApp) but do you use Facebook and/or Instagram? They all belong to the same.
    - Do you used UA-cam ("normal" version) with your Google account to upload your videos?
    - Sorry but that last tip about the bookmarks was priceless; it seemed like a new and innovative feature 😁
    At the end, even this tips are important from a privacy point of view, i think it's just a drop of water on the ocean.
    Thanks for this guide.

    Why Firefox may not be here for long unless its users help Mozilla.
    Very nice video BUT there are a couple things that you should consider updating in your video. I hope your other viewers read this, or at least that you consider copying/pinning this post somewhere. Now, more than ever it is important for supporters of Mozilla/Firefox consider utilizing their other products if at all possible to support the organization or we risk them not being around in the future.
    1. Firefox's built in Password Manager is actually their very secure and Open Source Password Manager called Firefox Lockwise. It uses the same encryption and security as other standalone password managers, can actually be downloaded as a separate app for both Android & Apple smartphones, and is as safe to use as any other standalone password manager on the market. In fact, I would feel much safer using Firefox's Password Manager over a commercial company such as LastPass.
    2. Pocket is suggested(not pushed) by Firefox because it is a product owned by Mozilla/Firefox and it has been integrated into Firefox as a service so it is not technically being "pushed" as you stated in your video, it is simply another web service they purchased and integrated with Firefox, it is not an outside company they are pushing on users. It is free to use but has a paid premium service option as well. It operates under the same privacy policies as the other Firefox/Mozilla offerings which is a rarity in today's world.
    3. Firefox VPN is another consumer product they offer and relies on Mullvad as their VPN partner. The VPN app is very basic as far as configuration goes which is a plus for non technical users but admittedly lacking in features for those with more knowledge although I am certain it will only get better with time and is something I subscribe to in order to support its continued development.
    4. There is another service Firefox/Mozilla offers (I actually find this to be the most interesting offering) which is still in Beta called "Firefox Better Web" it is another subscription service geared towards those who want more privacy in their web use. It essentially removes trackers, cryptominers, fingerprinters etc and works with any browser. It uses a partnership model that is best understood by reading their FAQ section on the website as this post is already growing large enough but it looks interesting. The address is firstlook.firefox.com/betterweb/ (feel free to type it in your address bar if you don't want to click the link directly)
    Now, why am I telling you all of this and why do I care enough to type a small novel in a UA-cam comment?
    Pocket, Firefox VPN and soon Firefox Better Web are currently the only products Mozilla offers to consumers with subscription fees tied to them. Everything else Mozilla/Firefox makes is offered to users for free (including their email client Thunderbird) but this must change for the well being of the organization.
    What many do not realize is that Mozilla is in significant financial trouble and while they are a non-profit the majority of their funding comes from Google which leaves them dependent on the funds they obtain by Google to set them as the default search engine. I want to be clear that I do NOT recommend using Google search for any reason but I DO recommend using Mozilla's other products such as Pocket, Lockwise, Firefox VPN & Firefox Better Web if at all possible in order to help provide alternative revenue streams to them in order to lessen their dependence on Google, support their employees while also becoming part of the lifeline that helps ensure they remain a safe, private alternative for users like us. Firefox/Mozilla must change, they cannot continue to exist as they currently are.
    The situation for Firefox/Mozilla is quite dire, this year they were forced to lay off 250 employees in order to remain solvent. Mozilla cannot afford to give everything they make away for free forever and unless users help by utilizing some of their other services they may not be an option in the future. I hope you will consider updating this video to provide some information to your viewers explaining this and how they can hep keep Mozilla solvent so that we will have the security of their browser for a very long time.
    For those who read all of this, thanks! Now go subscribe to something!

    • @sunknudsen
      @sunknudsen  3 роки тому

      First, I really appreciate you taking the time to share this with us. Unfortunately, it isn't possible to update a video on UA-cam or PeerTube. The video description is not the best platform for editorial content either... my gut feeling is most people don't read it. I agree we need to help Mozilla through this difficult period. That being said, I am not sure which is the best way forward. Feels like most people expect the web to be free... Curious, you seem very invested in this cause... what is you why?

    • @genesishep
      @genesishep 3 роки тому

      @@sunknudsen I understand that you cannot update this video but you could release an updated video with new commentary, correct your statement about the built in password manager, which was wrong. Etc. It's also an opportunity to draw attention to the issue. If people don't want to make the switch to FF that's fine but donating to them as a non profit and helping to keep the option available is a worthwhile cause in itself. There, all possibilities and options available to you if you wanted to revisit the you topic. I often wish I were more comfortable in front of the camera, then I would do it myself. The bottom line is you have a platform to get information out there.
      To answer your question about why? That's easy, because it matters, it always has and people won't seem to wake up to what is happening. Others are simply too uninformed/ignorant of the truth to know there is a problem in the first place. I've been a Firefox user for years, being in my late 40's I've had the unfortunate opportunity to witness the stripping of our rights to privacy and worse the lack of care about it all by the general public, particularly North Americans. Firefox is the only large scale offering on the market that embraces all the core principles I believe are necessary to help keep them honest and privacy focused.
      1. Non profit status. Even with their premium/subscription offerings as a 501(c)(3) Mozilla are not allowed to make profit meaning all funds received must be reinvested back into the organization for either R&D or paying for staff, infrastructure etc.
      2. Strong focus on the use of Open Source software which forces transparency due to the number of public eyes on the code.
      3. Legacy and reputation. Mozilla was formed from the ashes of the original mass scale consumer browser, Netscape Navigator. They have been operating now for years and have EARNED the trust and reputation they have by strongly honoring their written principles and policies. Any new entry into the space will have none of that history meaning they will have to build their foundation all over again. No small task for a company with millions, imagine a startup attempting to do it against a juggernaut like Google.
      4. Oversight. A non profit has an oversight board usually make up of public and private individuals who understand the purpose and mission of the foundation. Those put in charge of running the company and implementing the plans have people to answer to. They aren't privately run and largely under the control of one or two individuals. Changing the course of one or two people is far easier to do than to change the course and direction of a group. In short I'm simply stating that with more hands on the rudder it's easier to keep your ship on course.
      5. Mozilla has shown that it truly DOESN'T WANT to turn a profit. As crazy as this sounds Mozilla as a corporation was in far better position to abuse it's influence and legacy years ago and never did. They have resisted launching commercial products all this time and is only now doing it as a means to find it's existence and future development, not to buy 15 more cars, 2 more yacht's and a 4th mini mansion. They need to do it and so they will but for no other reason. That's not only the right thing to do is also the hard thing to do. Who doesn't want yacht's cars and mansions?

That being said, I am not sure this channel is the right platform to help "solve" Mozilla's financial problems. I will keep this thread in mind and publish content if I feel I understand the subject enough.
