I'm fortunate to have my grandparent's farms. I can sit up on the mountain at night and not see a single light. I can go to the lower farm, and only pass my aunt, who is a half mile away. I don't have riches, but I can at least grow food and have clean water.

be ready to defend it...when it's discvered you are self sufficent....then those who are not, from "the government" to the guy down the street, will want waht you earned.
      Don't let them take it.

Matt those people live in a different world. They need to thank God for what they have. It's only through God that they have anything. And all they are given is a gift from God. It's only from God you always you to have it.

My in laws live out there- made the Forbes list 20 years ago- they were the hard working generation of the 1960s. They came to Cali with 37 dollars in 1964.
There is a massive Bible on a stand in their initial entry way of their house.

I just had the talk with my daughter about how expensive food is and that when daddy finds short ribs on sale she needs to enjoy them and finish her dinner, LoL

Love this. I had to have a chat with my daughter. We eat out a ton cuz we enjoy it and I can afford it. But I emphasized that this is not normal behavior and is very expensive especially now. Trying not to spoil her too much it's tough

@@jorgeromerro7480 I like Teren slacks. I own five pairs. Some are a bit larger waistband to accommodate appendix carry. Lightweight, stretchable fabric, stain resistant, magnetic button, drawstring for those times you don't want to wear a belt, deep concealed security pockets with zippers for your wallet and keys. etc.

@@marksweetser6312 when I was growing up in the late 70s I remember my dad saying eat all you want but never waste any as their are others around the world that go hungry. We need to thank God there is food on the table

Poor people do the real work and production - and of course, machinery.

@@paulsawczyc5019 that's Collectivism....jobs granted by traits, not skills. Those with skills are doing all the work, and cannot advance. Those that cannot fail upwards by traits or "following the company line"
France resolved this years ago...they threw their wooden shoes into the machinery to stop the processes.
These shoes, called "sabo" are how we got the English word "sabotage".

We're in Central Indiana. Our cost of living is much lower than where you are. I had lived in the Sacramento, CA, area for many years and left about 5 years ago shortly before the lockdowns. A large part of the reason I left was the cost of living. Another large part of the reason I left was to move close to family. Gas here is about $1 cheaper per gallon than what is was paying there. Housing is much cheaper. Property taxes are cheaper due to much more generous exemptions and the much lower housing prices. Utilites are much cheaper. Even though I'm in much colder climate my winter heating bills have not been as much as they were in CA. My home here is about 250 square foot smaller than the one in CA so that's part of it. I'm still able to feed each adult for $75 per month. There aren't any children living in my home. The cost of things that surprised me here was that my cell phone bill was about $3 higher due to more taxes on that here & internet was higher. I've made different decisions in those areas and lowered my costs. Virtually everything that I do here is cheaper. While there are things I miss about CA the cost of living isn't one of them. And yes, there are wealthy people here, too, but the gap doesn't appear as wide. Oh and we have NO DEBT. We have money for some extras like cups of coffee out 2-3 times a week, restaurant meals out 3-4 times a month at restaurants like an Olive Garden, hair appointments every 6-8 weeks, the occasional weekend drive to someplace 2-3 hours away, some new clothes. We haven't taken any vacations and we don't have any planned. We have done some day trips in the last 5 years and we will probably do a couple this year. I consider us fortunate. At the same time we've planned our spending. We've adjusted the thermostat to keep our bills low. We know how to shop to save money. We combine errands to save on gas and wear and tear on the car. We budget and stick very close to it. Today I will go through what we've spent so far in May, what we plan to spend during the last few days of May, and our planned expenditures for June. Our income is not high but because of decisions that have been made over many years-some big ones and many small ones-we l believe we live well.
