    Wow! Just wow! I never thought this deeply about UL certification... Now that's really a huge point "what if!" condition... Thanks so much for these detailed information and appreciate you taking time to educate me and all viewers here. I knew what UL certification is but never thought about insurance part. Great, keep the good work bro! By the way, love the midas in that top tank, he is the man..

    I have been running a 304B on my 75 gallon goldfish tank for almost two years . I didn't know it wasn't UL listed when I bought it but so far it is working very well. Can't beat the price. Good job explaining this.

      Like I said they're excellent filters and work very well, and I imagine since the aqua top is UL rated they're probably aren't many differences between the aqua top and the sunsun, so more than likely you'll be perfectly fine, I've never had any issues myself and I've been running them for years.

    I have two 304B filters running on my 180 gallon for over two years now. I'm very impressed with their performance very reliable and quiet. The only issue I had was an inlet pipe came lose one night and almost drained my whole tank but that was my fault for not checking the attachments after cleaning them.

    Dude you completely changed everything for me! I was always used to seeing the UL on stuff but never gave it any thought. More reason to just buy the big names! Can't believe I learned this through research for a canister filter 😂. Rather pay the extra couple hundred bucks then to be worried about paying thousands out of pocket. I just love how they don't make it obvious for buyers on amazon or something though..

    Great information. I live on the third floor of a condominium building. I'm actually researching canister filters now. This video could save my ass. I see a ton of great reviews on the Sun sun units and I was seriously considering one. But due to the risk, no matter how good those are, it just is not worth it to me. I'll have to get a UL listed unit. Thank you!

      You're welcome, something I would still recommend even if you get a good highly rated canister filter is to place the canister filter in a storage container of some kind while it's running that way if you do develop any leaks the storage tote will catch the water before it gets to your floor, May save you from future headache 😁

    I appreciate your commentary and thoughts on the Sunsun filters.
    Its absolutely shocking as to how much the price of these filters have gone up in price over the past few years.
    You mentioned that you purchased the 303B for $70 odd dollars... just looking on Amazon's website, we here in Canada are looking at $220.00 for the exact same filter from Amazon. ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS!
    a friend of mine purchased the exact same filter for $140 CA dollars 4 months ago and now Amazon is listing it on their website for $220.00... I guess we can blame our governing bodies for the obserd jump in price.
    NTL! on a lighter scale of things... the o-ring that keeps the power head sealed from the canister bottom has a rubber o-ring around the outer perimeter of the powerheads (internal) structure that prevents the filter to spew water where it's not supposed to be.
    This rubber o-ring has a tendency to severely stretch wayyyy out of proportion by about 1.5 inches mysteriously!
    If this happens to you during a general filter maintenance, cut the o-ring and then check its size against the normal "seating" location.
    You'll want to make sure it's secure within that groove.
    Make a mark if necessary, where the two ends should meet flush. Trim if necessary.
    At this point, you're going to make sure the ends are clean ... very clean!
    Get put your "Loctite craxy gel glue" NOT the liquid glue stuff and put a dab of the gel glue on only one end of the o-ring the size of a pinhead.
    Woth a steady and patient pair of hands, hold the tow ends together for about 15 seconds. You'll want to be as accurate as possible when joining the two ends together.
    Cyanide glue (crazy glue) is a very strong adhesive to rubber.

I have the black coarse filter pad on the bottom, next a finer blue or green filter pad and last a white finer filter pad. The white filter has gunk on the top of the pad not the bottom like I thought. Doesn’t the water come in at the bottom and then filter as it goes upward. Shouldn’t the gunk be under the white filter pad rather than on top.

    • @TrafishAquatics

      If a tank is cycling it has ammonia that is normal, eventually bacteria will begin to colonize and will start breaking that down into nitrite and then break that down again into nitrate. once the cycle is fully established you will only have nitrate left. were you doing a fish in cycle or a fish less cycle?

    I've seen similar warnings for decades about insurance companies denying coverage if a fire is started by a product that is not UL-listed. As far as I've been able to determine it's purely an urban legend. My own policy has no such exclusion and I've never seen one that does. Did you honestly find an exclusion in yours? What company is it and which state are you in?

    • @TrafishAquatics
      @TrafishAquatics  4 роки тому

      I'm in Pennsylvania and I use progressive home insurance, I specifically called and spoke with an agent who confirmed that in some instances non-UL certified products, if found to be the main culprit of damage, could void insurance coverage. although one thing I was informed of is its entirely up to the insurance adjuster that comes to review the damages.

    • @RealMenHaveCats
      @RealMenHaveCats 4 роки тому +3

      @@TrafishAquatics Well, it sounds like your agent didn't know the answer and just spouted a bunch of BS. An insurance policy is a contract, governed by contract law as well as your own state's laws and regs. The only way coverage could be denied is if there's an exclusion in your policy. Some rogue adjuster can't just decide to deny coverage--if he/she did and there's no exclusion in the policy, you'd have an outstanding court case against Progressive for breach of contract and first party bad faith!

    You really should update this video. You were screwed by your insurance agent. You were made to alter your way of life causing financial hardship due to false information from your agent. Perhaps you should see your agent in person, file a complaint on that agent, and then terminate your coverage. Make sure you have new coverage before you do so and then file a complaint with your state department of insurance, which regulates insurance activity and insurer compliance with state laws and regulations. Fire is a Covered Peril regardless of how it starts, however, the underlying cause must be something deemed both unexpected and non-preventable. Devices that are "plugged in" to an outlet are covered hazards regardless of UL certification. If the outlet into which they are plugged was the source of a problem, and the problem was due to faulty/incorrect wiring, then the company can dispute a claim in which then you would file a claim with the home builder. If the device malfunctions through no fault of your own, your home insurance policy is likely to cover it. But if the device caught on fire because of poor maintenance, or because you operated the appliance in an unsafe manner, then the losses may not be covered. For example, if your stove caught fire because of a grease buildup and the flames spread throughout your kitchen, your insurer likely wouldn't cover most of the damage - as they'd deem the blaze to be preventable. One might have a DIY custom-built computer, therefore, no UL certification causing a fire. As long as it was deemed unexpected and non-preventable you should be covered. In my opinion, you should feel free to purchase and use any device you wish. One last word about insurance. If you have several tanks and you are worried about possible flooding then you may need to purchase a separate rider covering flooding. Always speak with your agent should you have any questions.

      I have well water so I don't even use the prime, I have it on hand incase I have an ammonia or nitrite spike so I can detoxify it but I haven't had one of those in a few years too 😆

      It is the beauty of having well water pumped to the home. When I first started fish keeping, I was misinformed and bought water conditioners such as Prime, then I found out one day by adding water to the tank after a water change and forgetting to add conditioner. After noticing no effect on the fish, I stopped adding them. But, water conditioners like Prime and any aquarium fertilizer for plants should NEVER be added on the same day or for up to 48 hours afterwards because the water conditioner will affect the trace elements in the fertilizer to a degree making them less effective

    So, if you flood your house with a SunSun, just tell your insurance company the toilet overflowed. :P Go with the half cost filter that is the same quality. Not that I'm disagreeing with you, but do we actually think your insurance company is going sticker hunting over a little water damage?

    • @TrafishAquatics
      @TrafishAquatics  3 роки тому

      I mean it might work who knows 😂, also from what my insurance company told me it all depends on the adjuster that comes out, In my experience most of them would work with you, but there's also some that are straight by the book.

    Funny you don't want to rag on these filters, but ANYTIME you talk about a canister filter you are actually ragging on the filter, so how about just saying you either like the filter or don't like the filter, and quit wasting peoples time with this diatribe. Also, I am not an aquarists, but an interested party who may decide to get back into the hobby. I had an aquarium, in the late 1960's early to mid 70's amd remember when it was only air pumps, and undergravel filters Systems way before the big time manufacturers began flooding the market with water pumps, cannister filters, electronics, DOS, and everything that every aquarists seems to need.... So, as for me, I'm just interested in reading peoples articles......

    • @MarshMarlowe12
      @MarshMarlowe12 Рік тому

      I had an undergravel filter in a 55 gallon saltwater aquarium. Vacuuming the gravel with every water change was disrupting the bio filtration, which required more water changes, and stressed the fish. Canister filters really are a better solution. Sometimes progress is good
