It would have been cool to see my technical design class critiques conducted this way without names. Definitely makes apparent why brands should expect to pay upwards of 300/500 for a single tech pack
Yep - this would be a great critique process in college. The challenge I’ve seen, though, is that many professors don’t know how to create a great TP. So….🫠🫠🫠 And yes, 300-500 minimum. It’s a lot of work!!
Thank you for this video! I just looked up your article at LinkedIn about this. I am about to make my very first tech pack for two pairs of office uniform so this video is highly important for me.
This experiment is gold. It reiterates the saying that I have learnt to believe - You get what you paid for. Thank you for taking the time to make this video and sharing it.
So glad you liked it! And lol, yes, I love that name for the game 😂😂 (although that was not the original intention - I really wasn’t sure what I was going to get!!)
Heidi, thank you very much for this dedicated work. There is no such detailed video on UA-cam, it is a wonderful content. It contains very important information for freelancers.
thanks for posting this, heidi! as a senior designer with a background in production/product development, i know my value. i want to give you major props because when you did sewheidi, i learned SO MUCH with regards to design.
This was so fun and informative! I really feel for the entrepreneurs trying to get a good tech pack deal... they're going to go back and forth with their factory a million times due to lack of detail, or they may not be able to FIND a factory because of the lack of professional TP info.
Wow, I love all this information as I am going back to fashion industry as a tech pack designer after some time away. I will be using your tech pack as well. Thx🙂
Thank you so much. this does support a lot of things that i insist in my techpacks thatmy team thinks ia unnecessary. I know better as i started my workilfe in factories as merchandiser.
I don’t understand. Why is it a problem to ask for a size chart? I would have thought that each company would have their own unique sizing system for their customer demographic. 🤔
The problem wasn’t that they asked for a size chart. It was that the TP project we hired for (literally bought off the freelancers list of services) included a POM chart. That is very different than a size chart. He could have used our size chart to create the PoMs for this specific garment, but instead he just put our size chart in there. successfulfashiondesigner.com/how-to-create-graded-specs-in-a-garment-tech-pack/#Difference_between_a_graded_spec_and_a_size_chart_in_the_fashion_industry
Watching this video makes me feel grateful to have learned with you how to make a professional flat sketch, therefore feel mora confident about my work and my rates.
I’m so glad to hear, Soidee!!! Thank you for watching and for letting me know. Really happy to have helped you set up a solid foundation as a designer! 💖
Thank you for this video, Heidi. I realized a lot of things especially on the pricing and how low ball my clients previously has paid me. I am not bragging but my tech pack is way better, detailed and complete with all the necessary information for a garment that a manufacturer will need to know. And I'm too shy to price it at $150 thinking it could be expensive for them. But seeing Tanner's price and output against mine, I became more confident in my tech pack.
This was such a great video thank you. I create technical packs as a part of my services and just downloaded your free blank to see if I'm missing anything. One thing I'm now adding to my tech packs thanks to you is the colour code in my sample development pages. I often highlight mistakes but had never thought to colour code what my highlighting means.
Hi!! Such a good video! What software do you recommend to do the tech packs if it's not Illustrator? I see that your template is made in Pages, is that easier to edit? Thank you!! :)
Thank you! So glad you liked the video, and thanks for watching and commenting!! I recommend Excel. Other spreadsheet software will work well and is still better and easier to read/manage than Illustrator, but IMHO Excel is the best and the most widely used. My template is in Excel, it likely opened in Pages for you as that must be your default software for opening spreadsheets 😅
Thankyou for this amazing video. Heidi, I truly love your professionalism and how to try to your best to make the lives of other designers much easier and faster. Thanks again
wow thank you so much for this. As a fashion designer and pattern maker, it was very informative about what a client expects. I am preparing to enter the international market.
Hello Heidi, love your videos and advice. I have never provided as much information as you would deem essential for a super tech. pack. I guess it depends on if you are working with established brands or a start up. For me my clients want that I focus more on the design, sourcing, and development and less on the packaging and where the care lable goes. All of the brands that I have worked with have never asked or required me to add the lables or packaging to a technical packages as this is usually handled by their in-house production team. My clients have a standard that they and their supply chain follow. In addition regarding the measurment chart, I have only been asked to provide measurments for the 1st proto in their standard fit size (usually size S).
Thanks for watching, and glad you loved it! Having an in-house production team is a whole different ball game and means that roles are likely more segmented, which I imagine is why you are able to reduce the number of details in a TP. To me, bottom line is that a BOM is a BOM and there are set details that should be included (which is every physical component in the garment, including packaging and labels). If there were any question about that, I would hope the freelancer would at least ask about that rather than make assumptions and just not include it. That's where I got sideways with these results - don't tell me you're giving me a BOM and then not give me one (or at least not communicate why it's incomplete). Re: the measurement chart, the project brief asked for a size range of S,M,L, so that's what it should have included. If we only asked for a S, or a our standard fit size, then that would have been a different scenario. Overall, there was so much lack of attention to detail and lack of delivering what they promised!
@@SuccessfulFashionDesigner-sfd I try and teach young TDs that width is horizontal, height is vertical and length applies to items like belts and drawcords. That said, "sleeve or cuff opening" should be used--just shows the inexperience.
Your Tech pack base is a nice base but for me a textile designer have to specify alls details, I make one page for each details : stitching, collar, cuff, zipper...I think it's more understandable for the workshop and with this precision you can have a unique design. With you video I realize that my tech pack are really too affordables 😅
Great question! You can use your best knowledge to suggest a weight that would be appropriate for a garment of this caliber, or ask if they have any fabrics from suppliers picked out and get the details for those.
These prices are wild and so little info. Are brands really trusting freelancers asking $40 to choose their pantones?? Anyone making spec sheets in illustrator is planning never to see them again🙈
They are wild! But yes, I do believe many are wanting to get away with this price. These freelancers all had many reviews. Positive ones, too. Which I believe means inexperience brands are using them, thinking the TPs are good quality because they don’t know any better. What they don’t know is that the sampling stage could go so much better. Also, yeah, don’t get me started on specs in Illustrator 🫠😭🥴
@@SuccessfulFashionDesigner-sfd i have seen a lot of those "call center" people of indian-decent start off decent then trying to get more money through various nefarious means, and since You said he started to ask for more money and how You felt that it was unprofessional, i guess something just clicked...
Interesting video! Completely shocked to hear of a $10 Tech Pack!! Just a comment - disagree with not grading a cuff, even in rib especially on an oversize garment. Even gloves grade at the wrist and bracelets have extenders to accommodate larger wrists. Not grading a cuff can make a garment look very different proportionally from smaller sizes.
Yeah, the $10 TP is shocking - but people are buying it. That freelancer had multiple positive reviews! Interesting to hear your take on the grading, and there are always different ways to approach it. The way I see it is that just because a body gets larger, doesn't mean a wrist gets larger. Across xxs to xxl I could see grading where xxs-s have one size, and m-xxl have another. Personally, I would not grade 1/2 inch across a 3 size range.
So good!! I appreciate the breakdown so much & look forward to using your templates. Watching this makes it super apparent why designers working with new factories for the first time often have complaints and issues with execution matching up. I’ll be keeping up with your content, for sure 🎉🩷🫶🏼
Thank you for watching, and I’m so glad you found it helpful! Yes-it’s so clear to see why execution doesn’t match up with expectations. The instructions are so unclear!! Thank you for subscribing 💖💖

"cuff width" on Tanner's TP is "sleeve opening"
Didn’t notice that!
