Suburban mom, 43! I went to VW car shows with my dad when I was a kid and I always wanted a VW convertible -- back then it was a Karmann Ghia or a Rabbit! My '04 Aquarius Blue convertible makes me so happy. Perfect for a summer drive (even better if you put on "Pink Moon"). It has high mileage and expensive maintenance issues, but for me it's a luxury and something fun, not my daily driver.

I actually watched this video before deciding on what car to get! Since I'm going to college, my parents were deciding to buy me a car so I could drive to school. Originally I wanted one of the small Smart Cars, but considering my commute it about 40 min, I ended up wanting another kind of car. So eventually I went back to my childhood dream car, which is a beetle.
ALOT of people gave me sh*t for wanting one, and most of them were guys who would say, "That car is gonna end up breaking down soon." That's where I ended up watching this video and several other beetle owners who actually had some advice. Just like any other car, it's gonna have some issues, but if you take care of them the car will turn out fine in the long run.
I ended up getting a 2012 Beetle for $5k, which was a miracle to be honest, and now that I've been driving it around for a few months, I can definitely say the car is amazing. We did have to do some costly repairs; Replacing the time belt pulley (it was making a high pitch noise), doing the transmission change (the past owners didn't do it), cleaning a sensor to remove the check light engine, and putting new lift supports for the trunk door. I know...it sounds like a lot, however after doing all of that the car has been working like it's brand new. Despite it being 10 years old. XD
If you want a beetle, and you know you can do some repairs or have someone who can help you with repairs, I definitely recommend getting one. You'll feel super confident driving one around, and it'll make you look forward to driving. (My beetle is the only reason I even want to drive to school.) I also love the beetle so much because I'm no obligated to give more than one person a ride somewhere. No one really wants to ride in the back, so I get to enjoy calmness whenever I drive. (Or my music.)
Practically wise? You have a good view from the front window, and a great view on the rear view mirror, along with the general mirrors. There's great visibility, and the car is small that checking your blind spots won't be a pain in the neck everytime. The space inside is amazing too for the drivers side. My brother is 5'11" and he can drive the car with no problem. He actually LOVES to drive my car because of the different shift settings the car has. (Alternatively you can drive by shifting the gears in drive mode, without the clutch. It's a cool feature that can save on gas.)
Anyways, it's a long review, but this video is pretty correct on owning a Beetle. I'm so glad I decided to take her advice, along with the many other UA-camrs. Now, I have such a beautiful car and I wouldn't trade it for anything else. (😌If you're looking for a beetle, try checking Craigslist. Sometimes you can find them cheaper on there. I also recommend Offer Up. Sometimes owners are willing to bargain the price. And, make sure to check the vehicles history for the VIN number to make sure it isn't stolen!)

i had my heart set on a beetle ever since i was a little girl. i found a 2002 model with 68k miles on it for 3900 and thought it was the best deal ever. i’ve had sooo many problems. air doesn’t work, had to get a new radio and speakers cause they sounded like tin cans LOL. my door panel and door handles on the inside have even fell off or cracked off. blinker lights need to be changed like crazy. i’ve had to get new breakpads and shocks put on and a new oxygen sensor. sometimes it squeaks when i start it 😂 the dealer said it was something to do with the belts. I HIT A BUMP AND MY HUBCAP FLEW OFF 😂 and the cup holders !! can barely fit a starbucks cup in there!! i’ve only had it for a little over a year and i haaate driving it. it’s so cute but it’s just not worth the problems for me 😭

I found a 06 convert, 2.5L, wtih manual, and love the car...fixing little stuff now, side mirror, switch for mirrors, smells like crayola crayons, brakes, gas cap...touch up paint, new starter (I died at the dealership !!!)...

OG comment, I found this looking for a video on how to program a new key fob for my 2003 VW Turbo S, with manual transmission, leather interior, power windows, heated seats. Thought I'd share my VW from an old guy perspective. I received my VW in 2015 with only 24,000 miles on it. It was garage kept, I do all the maintenance on it, the thermostat, driver door window actuator replaced, breather tube from airbox to engine fixed, 3 sets of tires, and many oil changes on time, the manual transmission is changed along with the coolant every other year, cabin filter just changed, and milage is at 74,500. The soon future for my bug is all four brake pads and rotors, rear wheel bearings checked, and possibly replacing a slightly leaking grease from the left CV axle that is not clicking yet. Far future timing belt/water pump are done at the same time maintenance necessity. I find driving is ok, seems like freeway lane changes right side is slightly blind visibility wise, I have to really turn my head and look hard when merging right, as opposed to my large GMC pick up truck fast glance to merge. The las Vegas heat and sun are slowly taking it's a toll on the car, headlights will need to be replaced due to this soon, the paint and other things still look good overall. I use the car daily for going to and from work I enjoy how quick it is and maneuverable it is as opposed to my full-sized pickup truck. My job is (don't laugh!) driving large tractor/trailer trucks and forklift operator five days a week. Great work transport car for me with OK fuel consumption because it's a turbo. Thought I'd share from an Old Guy perspective.

Handles great on winding mountain roads and does extremely well in Vermont winters. At 80mph I still get 30 mpg with regular gas. Folding rear seats handle large objects and exceptional headroom. My butt is fat-free so I added 2" seat cushion which was my only complaint. My 2 dogs love the back seat.

I’m so stubborn like I still want this car after all of the cons LOL but the cupholder would definitely irritate me as well as the backseat because I’m sure my sisters would like to get in and they are all claustrophobic 😩... But safety is key especially for me and I don’t think luxe are worth Risking my life thank you for this video.

I’ve wanted a VW Beetle since I was 5 years old, I did want a classic 67’ but of course being only 17, on a budget and finding one that’s in decent condition for a decent price is impossible, not to mention I live in Canada and you definitely cannot drive a classic car during the winter here. I settled for my adorable platinum grey 2003 GLS Beetle, we paid $2,000 for it, I haven’t had any issues owning it for not quite a year now. I wouldn’t trade my VW for anything, she is my baby😂that being said though there’s a few things you should know about Bugs and I had to learn the hard way. While it is a small, compact car, which would normally be good for a short people such as myself, the dashboard is HUGE, it’s very long and if you’re short it’s really hard to see over even with the seat up as far as it can go, I now have an adult booster seat so that I can see over it. Another thing, Beetles are actually surprisingly low to the ground, you have to be a pretty good driver because even the slightest curb could bang it up pretty bad. Because it is a “foreign car” the controls can sometimes be a little confusing at first, there’s a bunch of dials and knobs and all that but once you get used to it it’s just like your average car, but cuter obviously. Other than those little things the Beetle is a great car, and I don’t think I’ll ever be able to own an suv or something in the future, I’m loyal to VW Bugs. You can always easily find your car in a parking lot, it’s really fun to watch people punch each other when you drive around and you’ll have the cutest car (which may or may not, depending on the year, have a built-in flower vase, because Beetles are just THAT extra) the new Beetles also handle really well in snow, from personal experience, as long as the snow isn’t extremely deep, you’ll do just fine, and it’s great on gas.

The ground cable battery to frame are always weak. Put a cable from neg battery to frame of car and save yourself a ton of problems. All the vacuum hose dry rot after 4 years so change them at 3 years, they are cheap and easy to change.

I bought my bug as a 30th birthday gift to myself....that was 20 years ago. I am now 50 and still daily driving my 2001 Beetle TDI. It just rolled 300,000 miles. If anyone should do a video it should be me. If you own a car....any car...but especially a European (designed) car...you NEED to be able to wrench on it yourself as much as you can. I do most of my own work unless it's something that requires an expensive tool that I'd only use once every 100k miles...for those types of repairs I go to a VW/Audi/Porsche specialty shop I trust (not the Stealership).

At this moment im having to fix the AC, in the middle of July, get a new door interior cause its horribly made, my convertible part of the car doesn't work, and now it shakes like crazy. The other day I was driving around and it completely turned off while I was at a light. I love it though, so im willing to get it all fixed with new interior. Definitely wouldn't recommend it to anyone unless you like the look of it and want to spend a lot of money fixing it up.

But I just bought my 2013 beetle at 80,000 no problems so far, just make sure you up keep it and when it starts to have problems RUN.. get a new car lol. But as long as you have low miles you’ll be okay and have some what a longevity if it’s over 100,000 miles you’ll in the danger zone.

Meineke forgot to quote me labor for changing my brake light and it cost them $60 - half hour labor to change a rear bulb because you have to remove the rear tire. I bought a 2012 in 2019 with 43k miles and pieces of the fender have broke off. I've driven it for gig work as a courier and I've really had nothing wrong with it other than a bout of typical vw electrical stuff at 75k miles and my battery just died.

You can tear the engine up fast by not following certain steps. So when you buy a used one, you don’t know how the person before you drove it.

Great video 👍🏻! I’m planning on buying an newer beetle convertible from like 2006-2010. As you mentioned all model years earlier are full with issues beside those little things like battery or lights. But that’s it for me 😂. All contras beside this aren’t real for me. I want a convertible anyway so the trunk isn’t big in most cabriolets especially in this class, four doors are possible for convertibles ( Mercedes made one 2007 for like over 150.000$ base price 😂) but there’s no factory made one with four doors, the space beyond the driver seat isn’t big, there are bigger ones but the only Cabriolet with a great fond was an E Class or BMW 🤷🏻‍♂️. The safety isn’t that bad especially for an convertible. Basically besides little issues it’s the cheapest really fun and good convertible you can get at this price 😂.
