I love the music of Philip Glass, almost more than any other composer, contemporary, or otherwise. I am not sure why that is, exactly. Precise. Mathematical. Pure. Clear. True. Zen-like. Sad. Happy. Beautiful. Serene. Delicate. Fragile. Strong. It seems to have it all, say so much, with so little. Uncluttered. Lean and mean. Straight to the heart. 👌
I have had the amazing opportunity to see Phillip Glass in person three times. The first was when I was a college student in 1991 when he was touring with his ensemble. The second was in 2015 at BAM to discuss his autobiography. The third was also at BAM about a year or so later where he and several other musicians performed these pieces. H
Philip Glass gave the modern audience what they want, which is consistent volume and tempo suitable for intimate sounds between earphones or closed spaces, and hidden melody that can be singed along, it is an adaptation when musicians can no longer confine their audiences in one venue and have their inescapable attention. (Means in the old days, audiences have to go on the ride of volume, tempo and mood swings a live show can offer, but not for busy serial fragmental music listeners of the modernity, who wants to avoid adjusting volumes between piano music and pop, and distracted by the bi-polar swings of some classical pieces. ) While a lot say it is minimalism, I don’t think so. It has all elements of the attractions of other already proofed classical music, like tensional melody, subtle tempo change, narration with a climax, it is just that those elements are spreed into a slower time frame that are expected from previous piano sheets, and berried among atmosphere notes(yep, I think that is what those repetition notes are).
Très bonne interprétation des études de Glass. Complètement différentes des autres pianistes, plus personnelles, très virtuoses et en même temps remplies de douceurs dans un force assumée et un rythme impeccable. Du grand art, bravo.
Never heard this interpretation of No.8 (53:26) like that. Slow but with lilting, clipped articulation. Sally Whitwell follows this tempo, but keeps the notes a wash. Lavinia Meijer on harp keeps a moderate tempo but most importantly keeps rubato and melodrama to a minimum, which is effective. Most others tear through it, so this presents a more reflective side of the etude.
Pianist provides best interpretation of this material. Only Namewaka's interpretation is anywhere near as satisfying. I discovered GLASS's ETUDES on You Tube. I retire almost nightly to the the compositions. Now I'll add this upload to my downloaded You Tube library. I'll patronage this record label and support this pianist. ETUDE 2 is my favorite. I'll have it programmed at my wake. The interpretation is solemn yet hopeful. However possible I suggest release of ETUDE 2 as a "single". Reminds me of the mournful bluesy music released as Joni Mitchell's BLUE album. ETUDE 3 would be a great "flipside". The pianist hints perfectly at boogie woogie piano. GLASS rocks here and the pianist rolls perfectly with it.
Have you listened to _Amazon river_ ? From the album _Aguas da amazonia_ , the collaboration between Glass and Uakti? Etude 2 is the foundation for that piece and in _Amazon river_ they take it so far I can't help but cry every time I listen to it, it's my favorite piece in that album.
Glass compositions are sweet! However I'm not so convinced by Jeroen interpretation, notably No. 6 where I'm even guessing if he is on full control of the piano. Nevertheless thanks to Jeroen to share whith us Glass etudes.
All exceptionally good and well, but UA-cam still ruins the tension by throwing in the odd ‘intimate hygiene’ ad here and there, so I want to buy this on a cd so I listen to it in the comfort of knowing UA-cam is not watching me. Brilliant Classics, can you put a link to a vendor in the description? Many thanks!

Not sure the appeal, though it can certainly work for dystopian or existential movies. The length of repetitioned monotony may indeed enable sleeping - or cause others the same torment as mindless elevator music.
For our disappointings [s - because your disappointment, my disappointment, his her their disappointment - are different disappointments] there are no G majors at all. But I can’t use piano to fill the cell of the discourse formation.

Just bought a lexicon? idiot fool annoying duh
True!
Thanks for sharing! 👍 👍
@Jack Nimbel serene reflection meditation, is the name of it. Better than any drug. Perhaps you might check it out. ✌️

Mesmerizing performance! As is sound engineering!! Thank you, Brilliant Classics!!!
I love the way this pianist approaches Phillip Glass.
I hope Glass is aware of this collection.

This is a perceptive comment.
I love you Phlip Glass, just so so much 😭

@@jennyfarside6832 Loved it. Thank you so much. Greetings...
Une recueille si mystérieuse, si tendre, mais une véritable« chiaroscuro » pleine des paradoxes. Génie. Merci!

I've seen him only once. Need more.
fabulous playing and music
¡Magnífico! ¿Qué más se puede decir? La ejecución es de una virtuosismo clásico, impecable.

Pure beauty
Most Beautiful Études! Great upload, Thanks!
They are wonderful. Glass has contributed so much to music.

Jeroen van Veen really adds a touch of magic to this piece!
Simply beautiful!
I second what Christopher Brookfield said. It says so much with so little. Bravo.
How beautiful it is...

Que maravilla, esto me conecta con la fuente suprema y más allá.
The first etude is imperishable .
Great work , viva Van Veen
아름다운 피아노 연주곡 감사합니다~🎵🎹

Superbe. Magique. Transportant. Merci :)

It's great music.
So so beeeeaaautiful ♥ thanks
Very similar to the music of Hania Rani. Very addictive and relaxing. Thank you for posting.
Brilliant! Thanks you!

I love XII - Etude in D Minor
Amazing. Thank you. What are the chances you all will issue this as a vinyl set?
Sorry Carlo, but I don't think we will release this as a vinyl set
Thin gruel for us who have dined on Bach.

Целая Вселенная за 2 часа и 23 минуты
I went out for a smoke, did some laundry, and picked up the groceries- and he was still playing the same tune !
Anyone have details of the tracks ?

Holy shit he manages to drag out Etude VII to 15 minutes!!!
The first track reminds me my early compositions.. not so good 😅
B O R I N G
Silent film or Theatre Film Music..
wo...w
The complete opposite of New Complexity (Finnissy, Ferneyhough etc.)😁

He has a real habit of pausing between each section of each new piece. I don't think it's right.
Actually brilliant classics. So we hic et nunc are in the space of correspondence of name and esse (nama-rupa casual continuum).
No, the gaps between the sections is really bad.
The music makes itself. Who is the player, who the played?
De la musique au kilomètre...
Plaisant pour faire des exercices ...
Good ambient music, good for study, not much melody.
It sounds like someone is in a hurry.
what a genius. The empreror has clothes !
Philip Glass as if easier than Erik Satie est.
Most of this is extremely beautiful, except for the fast block chord section, that seemed to me to be poorly done "Philip Glass."
!
Mouais
This is just dull.
what a vile interpretation......we're not in Versailles-hehe........who plays like that anymore? It's Glass not Mozart..........
This comment made me laugh, thank you!
How awful.......reduces this beautiful piece to merely a scale
"this piece". As if there's only one lol
