Will it Run? Episode 16: 1958 Chevy Delray! Part 3 of 3

- Hi!
We're back, and this time we've scored this decrepit old Delray to save it from the scrapheap! It has been parked for over 25 years and has clearly seen better days. We're not gonna plate this one, but it needs some tidying up just to be presentable. Someone sanded a lot of the paint off many years ago, so I think we should try to touch it up a bit just for fun.
This old Chevy bottom-feeder still has its original 235-inch inline 6 banger; a very reliable old unit in the day. She wasn't seized up, so I figured it wouldn't take much to get it running again. Of course, she'd look a lot better with some cool old rims and tires from the CWMC used-tire division!
Well, thanks for tuning in; I hope you enjoy a little goofing around on this sweet old Delray... the budget has been set at zero, of course, so let's get to work!
Cheers from us here at CWMC Headquarters!
I absolutely love that color combination on that car. An amazing success story for Cold War Motors, eh!
❤ your old videos 🎥 so COOL l miss that era but the 70s and 80s Rock on hard thanks for loaning thanks a lot for loading up the oldies once again. Peace 👀
That Is So Cool, I'd Totally Use It As A Daily Driver
Bisquit's and Gravy........ Thanks for showing!!!
saved from the crusher 101 ! you just taught us not to throw away old cars , now i have to try one !
Heading back 7 years and finding gems! I like this old Delray, the poor man’s Biscayne… hahaha 😝
Love your vids, just like you guys I love making old engines run.
+Steve W Hey, thanks for checking them out! Cheers!
When I first saw this video, it was around the time Discovery Channel debuted a show called 'Cuban Chrome'. Some of the guys on that show were fixing up a 58 Chev sedan. You're like brothers from different mothers!
Nice old Chevy, surprised it started so easy after just a carb cleaning, that's quality !
Great job saving this one. It deserves to as Neil sings, long may you run. Just do not let any rats bite you in the ass that may be hiding in those seats. Two thumbs up guys!
I love ur videos,i watch them over and over again, much props from texas!!!
Really dig the 58 chevy, my dad's first car was a 58 Belair 2 door. 283 3 speed.
Excellent video Cold Water Motors Agents Scott :) yes 1958 Chevrolet Delray are amazing cars in day and remember restored one but surprises me 235 6cylinder also carb and transmission was rebuilt plus brand new clutch in only change was paint plus axle to 1978 Posi type 377 all was 50% original owner and 125.000 miles on it ! Have last heard car in Canada somewhere went British Columbia area! See you soon on Saturday night show down!
Wow same color as my '58 BelAir I had back in 1977. Had some fun times in that car.
The 235 six cylinder is bulletproof (especially after they went to full pressure oiling in 1953 on cars with Powerglide transmissions)
Nice success story here.
Very classy work mate! Absolutely love that you left the roof patina!
Another great episode and cool to see the finished project after seeing the work-in-progress. Good thing you use your powers for good vs. evil or you'd have the sketchiest used car lot in the world.
Hey, thanks! You called it when you mentioned the sketchy used-car lot! Thats exactly what we were talking about as we patched the rust holes up and painted it outside in the yard. This is roughly how the low-end car lots would have prettied these things up a bit back in the days before the BBB and mandatory inspections, haha! We had some laughs imagining ourselves as the proprietors of some kind of sleazy mud-lot full of 10-year-old "cream puffs". I've already started on the next gem; stop in as soon as you get a chance, 9088!
Favourite Chevy model We got Bel Aires CKD out of Canada including the V8 option, Delrays retrimmed in Aussie leather were done in OZ 6 cylinder only
sounds like it could use a new accelerator pump. great job it looks 100 times better
+John Waters LOL holy shit
Love your videos. These are the car I drove when I was a kid. Cheap fun with old cars. How great is that!
+Pwl47 Hey, thanks; glad you liked it! Cheers from me and Stel.
Feel THE POWER of that mighty six, torque it baby... Great looker for a few days of work
Wow, love this one! Great car and looks pretty solid! :P
I just love your vids!!! I need friends like you guys!!! I would drive any of these cars everyday. I can't believe how good they come out on your string budget!!
+willyboi708 Hey, thanks for checking it out! Glad you liked it! Cheers from us here at CWMC!
You can make water run a car ur fabulous and I enjoy all ur vlogs ty muchos
"Had an old gold Chevy and a place of my own."
Love the old cars I'm looking for a 57 (birth year) either Ford or Chevy to fix up. I turn 60 this year thought I should try it. If you know of anyone down here in AZ that might have an old plugger I'd be interested. Keep up the good vids, love it. Give Stell a biscuit for me.
Came out nice agents. Too nice for Sketchy McDustin's car lot for sure, eh?
That shotgun exhaust probably adds 50-100 extra horsepower
I love your projects. Good job on the Chevy. Looking forward to your next projects and hi to your favorite passenger Stella! You know Im a fan of your 72 Fury and Newport. How about doing a sprucing up of the Fury? Would love to see what it would look like on your zero budget.
Hey, thanks for watching this stuff! If you like the 72 Fury and the 72 Newport, I think you're really going to like the car I just bought! It will be getting the full treatment here very soon...
just about the best looking Chevy ever .. I truly wish I had one of these.
Glad you guys saved Her from the crusher.
Joe I totally agree, the styling of the very late 50's and early 60's like this and the Biscaye, have always been my faves
Now that's what should be happening. The idea of taking old steel and resurrecting them using basics is what needs to happen. With a few 'wrecks' spliced and diced, one car is back from the dead. Did the brakes work?
This is fuckin awesome
Hey thanks, and thanks for checking it out! Always a treat to hear from anyone who likes this kind of thing...Cheers!
coldwarmotors if I could find these treasures you're finding I would definitely be doing this as well, I'm in love with old cars because new cars suck shit!
Was the radio and all-transistor model? hard to imagine tubes surviving all these years!
This radio was a still- functioning tube-type... I was very surprised it worked, too!
Seasickness guaranteed in that bouncy beast of bygone days.
Yep, the shocks are well past their prime, haha.
love the work! im curious though...ive watched a few videos now and i only seen one that was plated to drive...what do you do with these once you get em running? do they just set again or get sold?
Excellent resurrection and welcome back! What did you use to replace the missing chrome trim? Turned out good!
Hey, thanks! I used some leftover stick-on junk on the front fender and some old Dodge Monaco side moldings on the quarter panel. Not exactly concours, but the price was right. Just don't get too close, haha.
coldwarmotors
Well it looks as good as it needs to be and much better than I thought it was going to look. Its a 50 foot concours job, and it works.
ok so for example the floor pans are totally gone...do I simply need new pans to cover the holes or are there other Panels in addition for the floor I.e whatever toe board is
Did you guys replace the rocker panels or did you Bondo the hell out of them? Loved the video!
Bondo time! haha. If I were to actually restore the car, it would definitely need complete rockers on both sides. Thanks for checking out the video!
Do you ever sell any of those cars that you fixed or do you keep them all
Do you still have the Delray? If so, have you started it lately?
how much mpg does it get?
No centercaps
For being one of the skungiest things you ever drug home this actually turned out to be one of your finest in the "will it run" series.
Well done! keep em coming.
Hey, thanks a lot, and thanks for watching this stuff! I think you'll like the next car too... even nastier than this one, haha! "Coming soon"...
This kind of content is pretty much the best that internet can offer.
Great outcome !! I only have one suggestion: "Don't ever get married" !!
Fantastic job and car, I love your "Will it Run" series and always look forward to more. The car looks great now, that paint job and bit of bodywork really made it nice, crazy to see the difference from start to finish.
Love to watch Coldwar Motors. Its good to see so many cool old cars saved from the crusher. Nice job you folks. :)
Si Carter Hey, thanks for the kind words. Glad other people think these old cars are worth saving!
From a distance that thing looks really good. Amazing what can be done with a junk yard car on a zero budget. Even for someone who doesn't have a bunch of spare parts on hand, a project like that would only cost a few hundred bucks. Blankets on the seats and a proper exhaust and you could take your favorite girl out on a date.
I agree. What lady wants to go home smelling like a 59 year old chevy?
The sound it makes!! Music to my ears! Love it so much! Great job guys!
It's daily driver worthy now, AND the radio works. (Works better than my '82 Ford). Man, how I would love to have that car.
That was incredible! Very nice!
Spend $50 on a muffler and some exhaust-pipe, weld it up, and you'd have something that would actually pass inspection and be able to be licensed!
Really, really amazing work on this one. Very impressive!
LMacNeill Hey, glad you liked it! More on the way soon!
You are unbelievable. Thanks for saving so many old cars. What do you do with them once your finished with them?
Bob Green Hey thanks! Mostly I just park them in the yard and drive them around a bit to keep them running. If I sell them, they'd most likely end up getting parted, so I will keep them for now. Cheers!
That was amazing. I like that you retained a bit of surface rust on the top, it fits.
I love it. You guys are magicians. Thank you for saving these relics.I would drive the wheels off that. How do you afford to do it? And is there that many old cars languishing around Canada ??
Florida would have ate that and spit it out decades ago.
Hey, thanks for checking it out... Not much to afford; most of the cars are cheap and they are only fixed up enough to putt around the yard. The good ones with plates on them take more work and cost more, for sure. Yeah, still lots of old heaps around here... I only buy what's nearby and suits the theme of the place here... Cheers!
love the sound of it.
I LOVE IT............ Brother, i would drive it everyday,,,,, Proud!!!
Makes me wonder how my old f100 would look if I ‘abandoned’ it in your yard for a few days
58's are KOOL, I have 3 of them. Have a 58 IMPALA, YEOMAN -that is 2 dr wagon - they made 4 dr. also. and a BROOKWOOD wagon - 4 dr. KOOL KOOL .............. tell us what ya did with it.????????
Just saw your old 58 on Kijiji. Missing the drivetrain and interior. The old white lightning seems to be holding up though haha. Hopefully someone with deeper pockets than I will step up and save it, this is still one of my favorite will it run cars!
Holy crap what a BIG difference....nice job guys!
All the cars on the lot ideally should get this kind of sprucing up, especially the Straight 8 Challenge cars!
Even for styling different than my favorite years of chevys I love the Delray rear end, this car went from trash to beautiful, if the undercarriage is good underneath and with an exhaust his could be put on the road and would turn heads. You've got a great car show right here in your own back yard. Thanx again Scott for saving and sharing these fantastic cars and making it look simple.
A great classic series mate, the stuff so many have based their channels on. Lovely old Chev too... you still got this one? Cheers from Aus
It's Videos like these that really warm my heart, I have become a YOU-TUBE addict, and no longer watch what was known as TV.
I am a recent convert to Cold War Motors, and I have watched all the latest stuff, now starting back at the beginning. I too have practically abandoned my Amazon and Netflix accounts for these videos!!!
A spring ritual I saw a local 58 Impala tonight parked far away from anything - original paint is very worn. Hawaiian until 1976. Top 5 of ColdWar. Also 63 Galaxy 500XL, 1959 Chrysler 500, 1963 Riviera, 1953 Henry J. Stella seemed to have been concerned that the Delray was on the road without noise abated.
I really liked this one! I would totally use that car as a weekend cruiser!
I loved the 59. I bought a 61 scayne back in 73 for 100 bucks. It had a 327 in it. Drove her for 4 years (drunk every night) sold her for 400 and bought a 70 C-10 pick up.
Good job on this one.....right from the drivers door fix to the radio tuning........hats off to you!
Great job, keeping it fun
Thanks, glad you liked it!
coldwarmotors amazing videos ..r u guys selling some projects
When I tell someone about Coldwarmotors, this short three part video series is usually what I tell them to watch. Scott starts out with a real mess of a throw-away car and turns it into something very presentable in four or five days with a budget of almost nothing. This video really hooks them, but good! :-)
Regards, Tom
It looks REALLY HAPPY to be going down the road again. Thanks for saving it. Can't believe how good it looks. AND THE DANG RADIO WORKS!!!
Scott another cool unique unknown classic saved from the crusher, though I do disagree with you guys on the rating at beginning, this was about a 3 or maybe a 4 with back seat intact, maybe a little better than the biscayne, at the very least both totally awesome tidying jobs and love the backdoor meeting on the body and around the tailigihts, both cars that I would love to own, in myopinion I think the are the vids I like the best, showing your craftsmaship and ingenuity in saving these old beaters and making em daily drivers, Please make some more fun vids like this.
Way too nice a car to scrap. Glad you saved it. Amazing how this car, despite being the base series in 58 as WAY fancier than any of today's cars.
brilliant! really enjoy your videos, we need more! That Facel Vega needs doing....or perhaps some classic german cars?
Radio station, CJOB. Winnipeg?
You guys are an absolute treat to watch!
I like what u did to the delray Shes nice dude! I would like that in my yard
Damn, nice job. You guys totally transformed the exterior.
1:07 Glad it meet the exhaust inspection standard! 🤣 You did an amazing job!! The paint is fantastic! What happened to this car?
Thanks for the note! I sold the Delray to a fellow in Calgary who had plans to make a lowrider out of it...Cheers!
A 58. The only Chevy I've ever really liked. Nice job!!!
Excellent video series, really enjoy your channel.
Looks and runs great, but I hope someone finished restoring the rest of the car. That car obviously needs a new exhaust system, but if I owned it, I would get a custom muffler to make it sound like it does.
First chevy offered with four wheel coil springs.
Excellent video! I had a 58 Bel Air I made a video series on, check it out on my channel!!
well done lads another beauty saved from the crusher.
Love the videos.good job getting that car to run.looks nice
julio sandoval Hey, thanks, and thanks for watching them!
yea, that car ran good enough to where it was worth making it driveable....great job!
Thanks for saving the old girl! I've always been an old car nut too.
this is awesome.
i just fucking love the fact that somebody is saving all of these old cars. I would like to come across either a 53 or a 64 Ford that wouldn't be in too bad a shape so that I could have something that I had a long time ago.I have had at least 35-30 different cars and about as many old trucks in my life. I don't have anything any more but I just gotta get me something before I get too old to fuck with it. My hat is off to you though.
Hey, cheers, and thanks for the note. All the best from me and Stel.
Australians and cubans LOVE this year
love the paint job it looks real good
Fantastic another good job love it
I ve always been a 60's early 70s muscle car guy, but you've given me a new appreciation for these classics you love so much, thanks
Hey, thanks for the note, and for checking out the channel...
See her in the background still at the compound.....seems like it could really be a decent driver? Staff car for a mid level agent?
Oh! I sold the Delray to a fellow in Calgary who had plans to make a low-budget lowrider out of it, which is a great idea. I hope he enjoys the old Chev.
You guys really pulled a miracle on this one! Itd fit right in down here in San Diego! Keep saving em!
Del Ray was only around from '54 to '58, and 58 was it's final year. I think it is the only year you got the "Del Ray" emblem on it (so you might have something with a bit of rarity to it). From '54 to '57, Del Ray represented the middle trim offering, also known as the 210. But in 1958, it's final year, it represented the discontinued 150 which was the low rung of the trim offerings. The new Biscayne became the next highest trim offering, as the Bel-Air became the 2nd best trim offering in '58. The new "Impala" trim offering was the top.
Fantastic job on this one, love it!
Liked that video a lot , sweet car.
Just discovered you people great work, could we discuss the Henry J. seen near the end?
gump Hi! Thanks, glad you liked it. Near the end, I think you're seeing the 1951 Kaiser Special from another of my videos?
It is a sweetie, but pretty rough, haha. Cheers from us here at CWMC!
The '58 Chevy is one of the most awesome cars of its day - beautiful design - and the suspension - engine/transmission upgrades made it really modern - even the Delray looked beautiful - i wonder what 2019 car will survive - 61 years from now???
Really enjoy your will it run videos. I learn a lot from your projects too. You have more coming up? Keep up the good work. I subscribed!
What a beauty
I always loved those "field shots", taken with a stationary camera as the given car
(with Stel and Scott) drives towards the camera.
Those shots always struck me as being CWM-exclusive sorts of things and
were quite artistic in their own way.
Was it the zoom settings, Scott? Always wondered how you got those shots.
That sort of thing doesn't get seen much anymore on CWM; newer equipment?
