Will it Run? Episode 19: 1957 Plymouth Plaza! Part 3 of 3

  • Hey, we're back!
Welcome back to our show about buying junk cars and getting them to run just for the hell of it. The budget is zero, as usual, and the cars just keep getting worse, haha.
This time we dug up a 1957 Plymouth Plaza 4 door sedan out of a local junkyard and thought we'd see what it would take to get it going for a drive around the yard. This beauty was scrapped in about 1968 after someone presumably couldn't get it to go anymore. It is in terrible condition, but almost everything is just the way it was when it was shut off way back when... There were even parking tickets in the glove box and gum wrappers in the ashtray!
Well, let's see if we can get it to putt around again; she's definitely seen way better days, but maybe it'll come back to life to take Stella for a ride!
Thanks again to everyone for watching and subscribing! Cheers from all the Agents here at CWMC!
Well, we kinda blew the budget again... A timing chain and plugs pushed the repair bill close to a hundred bucks! Damn! Also; I ran out of camera memory during the compression test, but the numbers were something like 60, 70, 60, 50, 30, 30... ouch! Haha, no wonder it's kinda hard to start...
PS: Mr. Lee Perreault, your parking ticket is 47 years overdue...

That is a Real Achievement, right there.
There is something magical about making an old car move under its own steam -again. A thrown-away car that now has a new lease of life and now it is finally celebrated again for what it once was. Nice work.

@@aliceshaw8265 not a full one, sure, but they got a car running that was ready for the crusher and didn't run for good 50 years. Partially definitely something. Best thing about getting something back on running like a car is doing so by using its factory parts or at least those it came with from the previous owner.

How did I not discover this channel earlier. Why do I spend all my time watching this channel now. I now realize my whole life has been misguided. I'm going to quit my job, leave my wife, sell all my house, cars, truck, and children and buy a classic car auto wrecking yard then live out my days in paradise.
    Excellent work Gentlemen.
Your content is very entertaining, easy to watch, and actually informative. Well for the most part its informative.
    Good job.

The car starts by itself. It's the little things in life that make it all so worthwhile.
In 1973, I was in the second grade, living in south eastern Saskatchewan. We lived in town, but had many friends living in the countryside. One of these families had a 1959 Chevrolet 4 door. Even then, it was already rusted out, had a snow tire on one front wheel, had home made plywood floor boards and had to be push started when cold. When it was warmed up, it could manage on it's own. The farm yard sloped down to the road, and they were always careful to park the car at the top of that rise. They also had a Valiant which was a much better car, being newer. The Chevrolet however, was about the cheapest model made, and had a 6 cylinder engine. The original 6 apparently died and the engine in the car when I saw it had come from the salvage yard, gleaned from a half ton truck. It had tractor like torque. The car left a faint blue haze wherever it went, never exceeded 25 miles an hour or so and they filled it regularly with purple gas and "Tractor Oil". To this day I have no idea what "Tractor Oil" was.
I spent a summer living with our friends on the farm, and soon saw that they used this 59 Chevy for everything. It was like an old horse, no longer good enough to trot or run, but able to walk a plodding pace mile after mile each day. It went to town whenever the oldest of the kids got permission. It served as a shop vehicle. It went out to repair fences. Through the use of a spark plug hole adaptor, it served as a mobile air compressor and pumped up the tires on tractors and the combine. The oldest of the children, (The family had 7) learned to first yard drive and then road drive in that car. On several occasions, I was allowed to sit in someone's lap and hold the wheel as the car idled in various circles around the farm yard. That was a most amazing summer, and I remember that car fondly.
So what I'm trying to say is, I know exactly how you felt when your Plymouth finally started all on it's own.

    DEAN!
Y'know, as I continue my tour through the back CWM back catalog, one theme
that keeps occurring to me is just the pure honesty of the effort.
Yes, they're mostly old forgotten clunkers and yes, there's certainly no effort
being made to make silk purses out of sows' ears here - but Scott's efforts
are quite honorable and the cars, inanimate objects that they are, have some
measure of their dignity returned to them, at least one last time.
To me at least....that's some noble stuff, right there - hence, why I've been
so enamored with the channel for all these years.
Scott - it's been a pleasure, sir. Good on ya.
    -Ed on the Ridge

I've been a subscriber for 6 yrs. I was sitting around bored one night here in North Carolina and got on UA-cam looking for will it run videos. This old Belvedere and a few others along with the commentary from you plus the other agents and the dogs were what got me hooked on your channel. I don't think I've missed an episode since. I find myself going back to this video once in a while wondering if she'll still start. I'd love to see her get some freshening up. Not a total restoration but make it mechanically decent enough to be an occasional driver. Or just send it to me and I'll procrastinate it to death like I do all my other projects. lol.

    Dear CWM Scott N.
👍👌👏 Maaaan, I simply love the Plymouth 1957/58 look/shape. To me it's kind of glamorous (although this steering wheel is very basic). In my opinion respectively for my kind of personal taste, one of the best car designs ever. I don't know about the driveability, but with that long overhanging trunk it must be "great fun" to drive while it's raining (especially if the trunk is full of heavy stuff). Gets kinda light on the front I guess. 😁 ;-)
    2) I loved to see the unforgotten and unforgettable calm star of the show Stella again. I nevertheless love Francine and her enthusiasm.
Best regards luck and health to all of you.

My neighbors had a car maybe one year different that we use to ride in. It was their regular family car back in the 60's. They called it the "Plymouth" if I recall correctly. It was a lot of fun watching your 3 part series seeing this go from almost being crushed. Thanks for sharing and preserving auto history. Your dog is a real mascot! It's kind of humorous too as one imagines that kind of poodle as a kind of status symbol among people with a lot of money. Thanks for sharing this experience!! Once again I find you messing with another car......a gem in hiding .......I have seen how a car like this looks when they are fully restored. And you know this car has huge potential...your collection is amazing.....

My favorite video! Love the plain jane look and color combo of that car. Wish i could find one like that here in Texas.

Visible at 6:37 - two DS Safaris and a CX. Methinks Scott likes Citroens.

Love the three episodes on this '57 Plymouth. Makes me want to go down to Sears, buy a battery, throw some tools in my truck and visit some of the few old cars that still sit out in grown up back meadows of one time farms just to see what would happen. If any of these cars cranked over, it'd be the first time in 50 years. What better way to spend a Saturday afternoon? Thanks for the great vids!
