    So one minute government asking us to cycle more, and the next minute they're not bothered, how strange. Or even a better idea, reopen it as a railway line, great video. The way of the future, knock old mills down, and fill old tunnels in, brilliant. Government might aswel put a block of flats where Stonehenge is and be done with history.

    Still can't believe that all this railway site has mostly gone! It's actually heartbreaking to think what we have lost. I bet it gets to you too at times. A lovely video looking back at the past.

    Darren you did a great job over the two vids explaining a site that is so difficult to envisage today .
    Impressive work getting up that hill . It is not hard to imagine why so many railways got closed when you see where the stations were built in relation to communities they were meant to serve .
    Good that you highlighted the Queensbury tunnel situation , would make an amazing cycle / walking route . It's amazing that they some officials want to fill it in must be relations of Beeching !! Trpical shortsightedness or as you say dirty money floating about .

    The amount of lost railways in west Yorks is unreal. Of course the Keighley Worth Valley line that exists today was intended to be extended and connect to the Burnley To Halifax route I believe. Currently to get from Burnley to Skipton due to closures.. one has to go into Leeds and back out to Skipton where as a line did exist directly from Burnley To Skipton via Colne.. so many of the interconnecting routes were just savaged without the thought that maybe one day too many cars would cause the issues.

    Now then our Darren. Great video on Queensbury part 2.
    As we said before the triangle has been obliterated, but not forgotten, but I have to say the land is in a terrible state with all the rubble, metal etc protruding out which I wonder what the land was used for after closure? Great use of the culvert word not to mention numerous "A" words. The tunnel stuff does feature on you tube alot, but rather than a cycle way the "steamy" in me imagines the KWVR linking Keighley to Halifax and becoming a larger operation bringing jobs and steamies to Halifax, the tourism alone with the Brontes, and latterly (& indeed presciently with the NEW KWVR based sequel launched this July) "Railway Children" would and should be fantastic. To me the remnants have been "tortured" during their abandonement which is sad. 1955 1956 must have been a bad time in Yorkshire, with that going and our Leeds new line. What a waste, and what a continuing shambles from the Government. Imagine the traffic and goods relief off the roads from Hipperholme all the way to Keighley, plus the environmental benefit even using coal!

    You did a good job explaining this fascinating site Darren - the fades were great. As to Highways England trying to deny re-use of the Queensbury tunnel, they need to be reined in and made to produce an excellent link for the future. Short sighted policies they naturally prefer, like concrete infills to Great Musgrave bridge in Warcop are so backward looking.

    Hi D, there's a (old) black and white video on UA-cam of the Queensbury tunnel, only short but shows steam trains travelling in and out. You probably seen it. 👍

    It's an early example of "rewilding", something that we hear a lot of these days with regards to the enviroment. But the sheer difference, from such an extensive industrial location to change so much, into what looks like a nature trail. Nothing was there before, that would be my words at first glance.

    Top quality again and deserves to be documented on national TV, im watching this in Melbourne Australia and thoroughly enjoying it.
    Darren, i guess your heading for the lees moor tunnel north of Cullingworth, this tunnel has to be the only abandoned tunnel that is not documented clearly on you tube. If you can get through that then you deserve a billion likes , really looking forward to that , if you can get through.

    Very interesting video on an important junction in its day Darren. The tunnel really needs to be saved for future generations to enjoy and glean an insight into the amazing engineering endeavors of our past.

    Great video, really enjoyed both of these! And yes, that climb up to Queensbury from the bottom is hard work! I've done it many times as part of one of my walking routes! I think I'll take the time to explore around there, I wasn't even aware of the other portals, just the Queensbury one!

    an absolutely outstanding film darren , i took a buddy on a railway walk last weekend while er indoors was at work , no wonder we struggled , the track bed was flooded and looked like a river , but close by we found a long line of sleepers in situ on the branch into central wagon works , as ever thank you for what you do for us , all the very best from nick in wigan ,still in lancashire

    Hard to imagine what was there! I've just looked that up on my pregrouping railway atlas, such a jumble of lines, not knowing Leeds it's just a mess of railways! You're educating me, Darren!

    Very interesting video. I live in West Yorkshire only about 15 miles from Queensbury. The desolation and devestation to the erstwhile railway network throughout the West Riding as was is heartbreaking. Beeching has lot to answer for. Whilst there is certainly an argument that there was too much track in the area, there was never a thought given to the future. Once sold off, trackbed is hard to reclaim.

    Great video! I believe the original intention for linking the station to the village was to build a steam worked branch line. It would have diverged from the Bradford line and climbed up to cross over it on a bridge just before Clayton tunnel, then swinging around to form an elongated u-shape, climbing all the time. It would then have run parallel to the A647 road back towards Queensbury to an unspecified terminus in the village itself. Later there were plans for an inclined tramway instead. As you say it is not clear which scheme (if any) the abutments over Station Road are part of. As an earlier commentator said all schemes were eventually abandoned and the GNR installed a few street lights along the approach road and a signpost pointing to the station instead (!) Looking forward to part 3👍

    Just a fact, that site was the equivalent of Spaghetti Junction to the motorway system? Love your photo fades esp when they have real folks in them. Always remember Bradford's old trolley buses. Those together with metro tram systems are surely the way forward in public transport? Cheers DougT in Mancs

    Superb video Darren as always. I keep looking for that tramway but with no success. Perhaps next time. It's a disgrace that when railways are closed the obsession with filling them in is allowed to go ahead. If the line were open now, there could have been a park and ride at the station and Bradford would be reached in 15 minutes in the rush hour. Such a sad lack of foresight.

    Fantastic video Darren. I’ve walked most of this a long time ago and it’s great to see it again, you’ve managed to put things into perspective better than my brain ever could! Look forward to the next video. Hopefully you can still get near the portal of the tunnel between Ingrow and Cullingworth.
    I understand why they closed these lines but they shouldn’t have sold the land just in case they could be reopened in the future. Short-sighted, just like Highways England. We learn nothing from prior mistakes.

    Great video, thanks for bringing and explaining this site to us all. When you say the government ministers make all the right noises, but their departments are against everything, I think this basically explains populists. They will say anything to remain popular and appear on the side of the public whilst behind the scenes doing completely the opposite. It would be amazing if the Queensbury Tunnel could be opened up as a cycle way. Let's all hope it does happen and more industrial vandalism doesn't occur and more of our railway heritage isn't lost forever.

    Excellent video, Darren. Nice to know that here are still some remains in this disused station site. The girders for that bridge is a remarkable discovery, just laid there after all the years since the place closed. It would be a great pity if the tunnel was to be filled in. I reckon it would cost a damned sight more to fill it with concrete or rubble than do it all up. Many thanks for this part 2, looking forward to part 3. Oh, just seen you on the canal boat with Martin, by the way.

    This was basically a hundred years ahead of its time. Today you could put a passenger ropeway in, instead of the tram, for a tenth (or less) the cost, and give people the usage of the stations.
    The technology just didn't exist back then.

    Brillant use of old archive photos & O/S maps merged with your footage Darren.Im always interested in this sort of thing as i find short sections of old cuttings & embankments with bridge abutments covered in undergrowth more intriguing than sections that have been re-used as cycle tracks.
    Down here in Derbyshire i actually have a bird spotting tent permanently set up on the former trackbed of the Great Central Railway,between Staveley and Heath and there are still a few remnants dotted around of sleepers,electrical cabling & the wide bridge brick abutments over the former Lancashire Derbyshire & East Coast Railway are still im place,only the box girder bridge would have been removed in the 1960s.
    The deep two section LDECR cutting below my tent location is owned by the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust and though it is part fenced off,railway explorers are known to get a look at one special survivor-Duckmanton Tunnel East Portal.It was filled with rubble right up to its roof when nearby Arkwright Colliery closed,but the surrounding brickwork and coping stones are in remarkably good condition.

    Queensbury tunnel was always wet from what I was told, but the water pouring in these tunnels is not often something that causes the structure to be weakened. Many tunnels in use today Bramhope for instance are very wet in places it is just an excuse to have what I think is the deepest tunnel we have to be filled in. A workmate I had had the section from St Dunstans Bradford through the tunnel to North Bridge Halifax. I am enjoying this series your research is revealing some great finds even though at first glance you would think there will be nothing left of this huge triangle

    Nice job again Darren!! I know I've said this before but why didn't they just think 30yr ahead in the 60s before they closed all these railways yes they were losing money then but they certainly wouldn't now!! it beggars belief.

    I might be wrong, but I feel the rail companies were money mongers, instead of looking toward the future. It’s a shame..I think the country suffered from this more than the companies.     If you think about it Queensbury itself was 400 ft above the Q'bury railway, and 1 mile to travel. The trams gave steep ( pun not intended) competition while the railway was extant, then they themselves disappeared. The car did the rest. Yes the Q'bury tunnel is a total scandal, it is an opportunity for The Highways agency to 'lose' a load of landfill.
    Disgusting really, have a look on Bradford Planning Portal at the planning permission. They turned the pumps off in October 2018 I believe, so the south portal at Catherine slack got flooded.
    Legal wranglings saw to it that they never got turned back on again.
    Loved the moving fade, very skillful sir, if I email you two pics, one from 1955, one from 2022, can you fade them? It is Gill Lane in Rawdon/Esholt!

    What a shame they want to fill that tunnel in. A cycle route and footpath is a great idea, they did this to Tidenham Tunnel near me (although the main challenge that had was the bats)

    I'm not on facebook, but if you go to the queensbury tunnel group page, let them know about the Rhondda tunnel Soociety, they are doing the same thing about making a cycle route, and have been through the struggle.
    (not sure if queensbury know about this)

    Nice one Darren, the tunnel is a very contentious issue, I'm with the cyclists and would like to see it open, the water issues could be channelled some way and stored usefully in times of climate change. Thanks for posting.

    Where you were at the side of the Keighley to Halifax line you mentioned a foot bridge, and also showed what look like a foot path there was also a subway here under the line, it was all tiled in white bricks.

    Willowherb publishing do 3 recently published books on the Queensbury lines: Great Northern Outposts Vol 1-3. Contains fabulous unpublished photos of the lines in use and decline and tracklifting. Graeme Bickerdicke of Forgotten Relics of an Enterprising Age is helping lead the fight to re open the tunnel

    All this infrastructure ripped apart all those years ago saving money, today with the transport problems we have would have made our travel to work etc much more viable with todays greener plans. The government/accountants of the day had no future plans but destroyed everything we need in todays world, money is the devil so so sad.     Loving these old line vlogs...
    If you ever find yourself down in Mid-Cheshire it may be worth looking at the route of the old Whitegate way line (from Winsford to the main Chester/Manchester line), nowadays its several miles a "flatish" cycle and walking routes....

    Why didn't the council develop housing near the railway instead of on greenfield sites dependent on roads.

    You have to bear in mind that these railways were only built for industry use and transporting coal around. The public wasn't the main user of these. When industries started using road haulage then that was the end for these rail lines. The public only used them for excursions just before the track was lifted! I bet there would be a big uptake on public use now with the roads as congested as they are!

    that 'tramway' bridge looks more heavy duty than 'ore cart' style use. normally coal/mining tracks & structure would be less heavy duty than a proper train or tram, so i 'belive' that it may have been for the pax tram as that would actually be more heavy duty use than simple ore cart waggons

      The ore tram went under this bridge. The bridge structure would have carried the railway tracks above.

      ​@@AdventureMe i was on about the station road abutment bridge, my fault as i didnt time stamp it or mention station road lol....had/having a few glasses of scotch.
      but as said, the station road bridge (abutments & the rumoured one) seems more of a public tram than the usual standard ore cart tram tracks as per with mines due to the more heavy duty look to the build.

      @@AdventureMe checking the heftyness (if that makes sence) on structure is thr one thing to look out for when telling defference in ore cart stuff and regualr passenger stuff. both constructon builds are often very different....from what ive seen anyway when it comes to small time coal mines.

      I was tempted but it's already been done many times on UA-cam. Most of my subscribers are either aware or subscribed to those other channels. That's why I didnt go into too much detail and point them to the official page for more info.

    There is no surprise that they’d rather just trash something than preserve something for the peasants 🙄 After all it is probably cheaper to fill it in and it will line someone’s pocket, whereas if they open it as a cycle path, the only people that will benefit is all of us peasants 🤣😂😅
    It is shameful that we even have to argue these things when in most other countries it is assumed things like this will be opened up for the benefit of their citizens. But that is the difference: we have governments that treat us like we should be grateful for what we get rather than people who actually want to serve their country 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Just so frustrating that common sense doesn’t prevail as regards the tunnels future use.
    Hopefully people power can win the day, after all, it’s crying out to be used and not filled in.
