Escaping The STORM at Luib Chonnal Bothy & Hiking in STRONG WINDS!

  • Strong Winds, rain and snow with a night away in Luib Chonnal Bothy (Glen Roy). Plus a Scottish Mountain (Carn Dearg) thrown in too.
    Due to forecasted back to back storms over the weekend, Bryan (a fellow UA-camr) and I had to quickly throw together a plan B so our trip could still go ahead. We felt a bothy would be a more sensible decision. Next again day after a fine bothy night, a short weather window between Storm Malik and Storm Corrie allowed us JUST enough time to get up to the summit of Carn Dearg.

    Stayed in that Bothy over 20 years ago now. Happy to see it is still there and still open. So many are now gone and or closed permanently. I remember there being cut logs when I stayed there all those years ago. Somebody had even left a dram or two, that was just awesome.

    It is about 14-15 years ago that I stayed at this bothy. A lot seems to have been done to improve it since. But i do remember that there were a load of comfortable armchairs there, which seem to have gone now. A polythene sheet was across half of the upstairs area, presumably to keep the heat from the stove. Downstairs was an earth floor from memory.... Must make a return visit sometime before I get too decrepit!

      Hi Alan, I remember the polythene sheet from my first visit. Circa 10 years ago. Trying to find my pics to see if the comfy chairs were there too. Definitely worth a revisit mate. 🏚 🔥 🥃

    I remember reading about the Glen Roy Roads years ago and they struck me as something quite cool. Are the 'roads' apparent on just one hillside or can their contours be traced right around the valley? One last question, I've always fancied staying in a bothy but was wondering, do mice ever nibble folks' expensive gear? That could potentially put me off! Good stuff Robin.

    • @WalkWithWallace
      @WalkWithWallace  2 роки тому +1

      Cheers Chris, the roads can be traced right around the Glen on both sides, more prominent in places though. Mice can be present, particularly if folk don't sweep up after themselves. Some bothies have a bad rep for mice. I've had over 40 bothy nights and *touch wood* never had any gear chewed. One once chewed through my friend's Nalgene bottle that had olive oil in it.
