- For our new farm gate installation, we set up a H brace with double cable braces to hang the metal gate which should provide added security. We ended up renting an auger to help with digging the holes

I’ve never seen a posthole digger like that you guys did a great job there not going to get in there unless they carry a 9/16s wrench in their pocket lol 👍
I put a lock and chain around the hinge post, so they better come with wire cutters for the fence, strong bolt cutters or angle grinder. LOL! This is visual security more than anything. Anyone who wants to break in an steal something will do it no matter what measures I put in place.

You guys should have bought an attachment for the tractor. You can normally find good quality used ones for less than 500. You will use it more than you think and if you get on used at a good price you can always sell it down the road for basically the same price. I recently put in 3 gates across our property in VA in like 2 hours tops, concrete and all.
I get what you're saying, and I have been keeping my eye out for an auger at a good price, but I can't stomach buying a rusty one for $100 less than a new one - that seems to be what everyone around here is asking. If I bought all the $500 items that everyone recommends, I'd be beyond broke. The $100 rental was right for me at this point in time. Thanks for watching!

awesome job! we didn't know what we were doing either just took a best guess on how to do it. but turned out great and sturdy. We had two, six foot gates and put a removable pole in the middle. Are you going to put a wheel on the opening part to help support the weight of the gate?
We just bought an Auger to help dig holes for our trees. the dibble bar just didn't go deep enough a post hole digger was a lot of work now with the auger we can plant them quickly and don't have to worry about cutting the roots down.
I wasn't planning on putting wheel on the gate. I figured I'd just watch and see what it does as the ground settles. The auger will be a good addition, I'm sure. I've heard of lots of folks doing planting with an auger. Best of luck to you!

Was there a reason you did not use concrete? I’ve seen both just wondered why you didn’t.
I've read and heard varied feedback on the topic. The biggest deterrent to me is the possibility that concrete could contribute to rotted posts. I went without to save a few dollars and save some time on the install. Our soil is heavy clay. Once it settles in, it should be real solid. The cable bracing already has these posts solid

What does your warning sign say before your gate? Is it just generic or something specific? I'm looking at adding one ....
Virginia has legislation regarding liability for agritourism facilities, so this is the warning defined within state code. law.lis.virginia.gov/vacode/title3.2/chapter64/section3.2-6402/ ... so just check your local laws to see if you have something similar
Why wouldn't you simply drive the post (pointed posts) or since you augured it out why not put concrete in the hole. Seems like you missed a good opportunity and will have posts in unpacked soil.
our soil is quite dense and these posts haven't moved. We're redoing our entry right now, so glad they're not in concrete and I can easily lift the posts and reuse them.

The ground isn't level so it could be deceiving. Whether its level or not isn't critical to me anyway. its holding strong and the gate is still hanging true here years later. 💁
