- “I can no longer walk, but I will learn how to fly.”
This is what Willem said after he ended up in a wheelchair in 2017 due to a motorbike accident. His big dream was to go kitesurfing on the waves of South Africa. In the rehabilitation clinic he started his search for the possibilities to make his dream come true. He had a customized surfboard produced with a seat on it. After months of hard training, the time had finally come. Two years after this accident Willem flew to Cape Town, where he made his dream come true. “This adventure has surpassed even my wildest dreams.”
Nowadays Willem’s mission is promoting the sport sit-kitesurfing and with his foundation he helps to make the sport accessible to more people with disabilities. Willem gives motivational talks worldwide about personal leadership, dealing with change and thinking in possibilities. He inspires others to never stop dreaming!

That's awesome that you are living life in pursuit of your happiness. I'm a quadriplegic it's really hard living this way with so many limitations. Sometimes it is hard to find motivation but some how I find it. My accident happened 3 years ago and left me paralyzed from the neck down. I was on oxygen for several months and in ICU for over two weeks. After ICU I spent ten months in physical rehabilitation. I have gained back some movement and sensation in my body. I never gave up but it hasn't been easy I struggled a lot with PTSD and depression after coming home. Your story is an inspiration to people like me who have to live in a wheelchair.
So good, so inspiring Willem. Love to be a part of your journey. Goosebumps everytime I think about your journey, were you came from and were you are now. Keep flying towards your dreams.

I only could realy understand this way of life, when I went on holydays alone with my father.
There I understood how my life was easy, for moving around, but his was so different.
He was amputated half of his both legs...very sad, but like you he never gave up, he was able to walk again.
This is the spirit of live....

Gaaf man dat je je doel en meer bereikt hebt! Je bent een inspiratie voor anderen. Ook voor mensen zonder handicap. Nooit opgeven maar mogelijkheden blijven zoeken.
Wat doe je als je omvalt tijdens het kitesurfen en niet meer omhoog komt. Een gewoon life jacket kan jou + gear toch niet drijvend houden? Heb je een soort van airbag bij je?
Dankjewel! Ik gebruik inderdaad mijn zwemvest en de techniek met mijn kite om weer rechtop de komen.
Geen airbag bij me 🙂
