    Finally, some aerial video that shows the full scale of this eruption.

    • @boxwoodgreen
      @boxwoodgreen 3 роки тому +2

      yes, just looking at a map doesn't give a correct mental scale of the distances from the erupting cones, and fissures to the road, and sea. Especially for people from vastly larger countries like mine (Canada) where we measure casual city to city travel in hundreds of kilometers.

    Thank you for doing what many others have attempted to do and failed. You have finally shown the perspective that allows us to visualize the path to the sea. Thank you. You should use this video as a base line to show the flow's advancement over time.

    • @nickbrough8335
      @nickbrough8335 3 роки тому +1

      Almost certainly. As the molten lava under the partially frozen surface drains and the level drops the effect should slow down. However, Its likely that all of the 10 to 15 cubic metres of newly erupted lava will head along that, what is effectively a lava tube, so we may not see much difference over than the flow slowing down somewhat.

    Fantastic view of the eruption site. Its very nice to see a new perspective, which shows the overall area rather than just close-ups which are hard to locate in context. More of the same please :)
    I thought the attempted earth damn was going to fail and it indeed has done. The close-up imagery of the lava flow flow reading the top of the slope and then running down there little valley over the scree slope is fantastic.
    Given the benefit of gravity and an active lava channel from the cone to the Nátthagi Valley narrows some 1.5 km (?) from the car park. Good luck if they do. That's roughly 45 tons of material being erupted every second in terms of weight, with the slope and what 70 m of vertical drop adding massive momentum. The only advantage is that the flow spreads out at the lava front.

      When I looked at GutenTog's video where he talked that site the day before yesterday (I think) the horizontal distance wasn't that great, but it was also clear that the more easterly of the two was slightly lower and was going to be the one under most trouble. With essentially a lava tunnel inlace, lava will funnel towards the point at which it rolls down the steep slope along the gulley to Nátthagi Valley

    • @philiprobicheaux3040
      @philiprobicheaux3040 3 роки тому +3

      @@nickbrough8335 you would think that would be the case...but as we've seen throughout the eruption, because of the viscosity and blocky nature of the lava, it could set up a path to the other point even though the breach is at a lower elevation. It's fascinating

    • @philiprobicheaux3040
      @philiprobicheaux3040 3 роки тому +4

      @@nickbrough8335 you can see by the fact the lava pools and lava river are in fact higher in elevation than much of the land it passes by, the partially hardened lava makes it's own banks and doesn't always flow to the lowest spot topographically speaking

    • @nickbrough8335
      @nickbrough8335 3 роки тому +2

      @@philiprobicheaux3040 Normally, it will spread out , but its clear from the videos (to me anyway) that there is a quite deep lava channel with steep sides, which occasionally overflow. Once that is connected to the Nátthagi Valley channels (as it now seems to be) I think it the majority of the volume will continue to flow in that direction.
