In most Asian countries being disabled is seen as a “burden” and is still highly stigmatized. For as someone who is going through the process of an autism assessment I saw so much of myself in Woo and could relate to all the stigmatization one goes through not only in the US but as someone who is Japanese. This was one of my favorite shows from last year and even though it has it's flaws I still thought how they handled certain situations was well done. It is heavily dramitized for a reason since k-dramas heavily rely on certain tropes. But I love how refreshing this was compared to others.

It is much wider than the Asian community. Autism is just another name on a longer list of being shunned. Being autistic is just another location in their hierarchy.
I agree with you and I enjoyed the show; I almost did not watch it. ☀

It would depend on whose definition of what a disability is.
Not fitting into modernity and its rigidly defined ideal of success could also be seen as a preliminary step of insight.
I have fought hard to present myself as the opposite of being disabled, if that means my own persona is to be negated.
I have not fitted in without difficulty, but I have not blamed my own essence as the difficulty.
I would never want any authority to define me with a disability.
Do I need to give a list of those first shunned who turned out to be as bright as any star. ☀

i honestly really like the show, even though the actor herself isn’t autistic, i really connected to her character and see myself in her. the way she portrays the character was respectful and you can tell she genuinely put effort into learning more. i just appreciate the work put into it. the show definitely makes me feel better about myself time to time and makes me feel better that these things are noticed and being talked about.

I think Junho is a very sensitive and observant guy. For example, in the first episode, everyone makes a big deal about the revolving door scene. But in the hospital scene, when Young-woo explains how the wife closing the shades is a sign of love, there’s a quick shot of Junho’s face, and he’s got this look that shows he’s thinking, “ wow, she’s really smart to notice that.” Even in the revolving door scene, she fails to get through once, and there’s a quick flash of someone noticing. This is before he even speaks, before you see him and realize how handsome he is. Even though other people are around, he’s the only one who offers to help. And of course he gets protective of Young-woo very early in the show, beating down Kwon Min-woo on the basketball court, even though at that time they are just whale-talking buddies. It’s also clear that he knows he’s the office hottie but doesn’t do anything to take advantage of it. He doesn’t date all the women who are interested in him. So why is that? It’s true we don’t know about his parents, and we don’t know how he got involved in volunteering for the disabled. It might have been a school project, since his friends know about it, and it just became something he took to heart more than others. Anyway, we have a second season to find that out. And there’s more. We want to see how the battle between the law firms shake out, and we want to see whether Tae Sumi acknowledges Young-woo as her daughter in public. We want to see whether attorney Jung returns to Hanbada or perhaps forms his own public interest law firm with the other attorneys as partners. We want to see if the other attorneys hook up or if their differences are too great. We want a really nice ending for Young-woo’s father. Most of all, though, is that I think we all wanted to see more of Park Eunbin in this amazing role. I realize there’s probably a lot that may not be authentic as far as someone truly on the spectrum, but it’s really just the character itself who is so fun and so moving to see. Those eyes! That smile! We all react to that.

I think that season 2 will give lots of opportunity to build Jun ho… as for his character, they showed he’s a bit of a scrapper when he needs to be, he’s popular but doesn’t seem he wants to be, and he is just a generally pleasant patient dude. He also obviously has a history of some special needs exposure too so I thought they gave us lots for season 1. I also think that the next season will do well as they are supported by their “case of the week” format for structure. Pretty easy to maintain as they continue building character storylines around it!

I do hope we get to see more of Jun Ho's character! I'd love to learn more about what his passions are, what kind of volunteer work he did in the past, and how it made him the type of person to treat a stranger like Young Woo with dignity and respect.
In elementary I was part of a program where we helped take care of and tutor kids with varying disabilities. I didn't even sign up on purpose lol, but I'm so glad I did! As an adult I can see how it opened me up to all kinds of people from a young age. Now I am a late diagnosed neurodivergent awaiting ASD testing. I relate to Young Woo and I would love to learn more about Jun Ho so I can relate to him more!

I think season 2 will give more background on Junho now that he has truly enter Youngwoo's world. The actor that plays Junho, Kang Taeoh, gave a bit of a synopsis of his character in an interview that was never brought up in season 1. It was mentioned that both of his Junho's parents are lawyers. He was actually inspired to become a lawyer as well but he wasn't as smart so he works on the litigation team instead.
We shall see if season 2 gets filmed though. Taeoh is currently doing his mandatory military service and won't be out until March 2024. They will definitely need to bring him back for season 2.

It kind of felt like he was there to be a sort of ken-doll "perfect partner for an autistic person" and didn't end up having an actual personality besides being pretty and an (autistic ally /LH/J). I really hope they flesh him out more in season 2 and make him wayyy more dimesional

I’m so glad you reviewed this show! I loved it and rewatched it with my NT partner because I thought it discussed so many important topics such as 1) autism specifically, 2) more generally about being ND (neurodivergent) in a NT (neurotypical) world, 3) an autistic’s internal thoughts and feelings and desires and passions, 4) acknowledgement of differing support needs, 5) how NTs can support NDs. There’s lots more 😊
It was just a great springboard for discussions!
And I sooooo agree about Jung Ho being a very flat character.
Also, “whoa, whoa” is now part of our interactions!

I would just like to mention my thoughts on Junho because I do agree with what you said about him. I, too, wish he was more fleshed out as a character because we truly don't really know anything about him. However, I still absolutely loved him because while he's not developed much as his own character, he was imo an incredible love interest. I think that's an important distinction because it places different expectations on him. Sure, it never hurts for the love interest to be also a fully developed character, but I think in this case, he was first and foremost the love interest while the focus was Youngwoo as the main character. So, his character had a role and purpose, and I think he did his job really well in that regard. Though I would love to and think it would be interesting if they developed him more as a well-rounded character in season two which maybe can be one of the reasons or at least a great opportunity for the show to have a second season.

This is actually the show that led me to this journey of understanding that I am on the ASD spectrum. I recognised a lot of myself in the main character but not to the extreme they are portrayed. So I dismissed it as not possible because I am not "visibly autistic". But then I saw an autistic adult write a review saying they enjoyed the show but found the cutesy child like portrayal slightly problematic, and that confused me because I thought that is what autism was. This led me to do a quick Google search on autism in adults and it was like a light bulb went off, I suddenly found myself online. It was jarring and comforting at the same time.

I have watched this series twice and all 16 episodes and it is ahead of how the USA is showing autism to the public.
It certainly can be improved on, but for a general public it is a step in the right direction.
For children with autism it is a view of a paradigm I wish I could have seen.
I was born in 1944 when autism then was described as mute and not toilet trained. The view of autism today is unlike it was as pre DSM 4 or DSM 5.
What is most charming about Attorney Woo is not her photographic memory, but her incredible insight which allows her to use that ability.
Insight is by far the better attribute.
Hans Asperger should be remembered in full.
I no longer use the word ‘Aspergers’ to describe myself. I will say I am autistic, without qualifiers, if it would be helpful.
Thank you Stephanie Bethany for approaching this series.
Autism, Feminism, LGBTQIA , Racism, Equal Rights, and Ecology are all needed to work together.

As someone outside of the issue, what i appreciate about the show is it doesn't feel like a PSA. Yes, there's a focus on these issues, but it's played more as a character's journey rather than soapboxing.
The other thing that i really like is the show is very much from her headspace, so it isn't focused mostly on how other people react to her. There's a good sense of her own frustration and sense of wonder. She is very much a person not a condition.
I'm happy to hear the show is doing a reasonably good job of dealing with a condition i know very little about, but it definitely pulls me in more than Atypical, which too often felt like people struggling to deal with an autistic character.

OMG !!! I am an Autistic savant, by diagnosis. And, I would walk into Courtrooms in my own cases, while the other Neurotypical lawyers walked in with huge trolly-carriers filled with boxes full of papers and legal texts, three boxes stacked on top of each other. And, I would be able to script out and say an entire argument with citations and even where in a law Reporter a case quote could be located (e.g., around 2/3 way back in a certain numbered So.2d Reporter), all from my savant memory, and the Neurotypical lawyers would start freaking out visibly, and opening their boxes and texts and trying to flip through them to find if I was right or wrong, and then they turned very hostile at me because I could just script it out from my savant memory in my head, and they couldn't, and it freaked them out, and then they went on hate attacks on me both in the Courtrooms and outside the Courtrooms And, these were like people I went to law school with !, Maybe they went to a different law school, but they were like the people I went to law school with, since most law students are a lot alike, but nevertheless ... like you say, they went out of their way to make efforts to say I was wrong. They wanted me to be wrong !

I wanted to say, as the mother of twins who are on the Autism spectrum, I am sorry that people have been competitive with you, or have looked down on you. This kind of thinking does NO ONE any good. Even the person who is treating you badly. ...I think that THE way to avoid envy over how green someone else's grass appears to be while also avoiding feeling like you are better than anyone else is to ONLY compare yourself to how you were yesterday. There is simply no need to be competitive. I think it is FAR better, and healthier, to enjoy the talents that others have! Take care. Thanks for making this video! Susan

I loved how they addressed her personal experience and left some questions open ended - it felt a lot more honoring to the complexity of real human experience to not tie things up into a neat bow. One memorable autistic client of mine... Was 25 when I was 45. She was the most brilliant client I worked with in my career. That aside, she would write incredible, sexual, and passionate poems. Then she would close her eyes and recite her latest epic poem in my office. She never failed to amaze me. She called me her "Yoda."
She was socially awkward. Even her style of dress was awkward. When invited to a family gathering, she would isolate herself and read a paperback book the entire time. It was MY job to help her to accept herself and the gifts she had to offer.

OMG ! What you say about people can't seem to hold the idea in their heads of someone being disabled and at the same time being smart - I first discovered I was Autistic when I was outed by a Deputy Trial Counsel of the State Bar of California, and what she did was filed a motion for a physical and mental examination of me by a "developmental psycholinguist." I never had anyone say I had any kind of "mental problem" before that. But this lady kept saying I was "odd" and :weird" and she wrote me that "some people can be "highly intelligent and have a mental illness."' When the Deputy Trial Counsel made that move, I went to a former riding student who is a psych, and he wrote me an opinion that I may have "peculiarities" but that didn't matter, basically. Yeah, I was obviously Autistic. To understand these unfolding circumstances, you have to (1.) be Autistic, and (2.) put yourself back into the state of Autism knowledge in 1994-1995. So, yeah - what you just said happened to me !

The episode makes consent very vague, and it doesn't change the fact that the "victim" said she consented.
Which as a person who needs things clarified to him as an accomidation, makes me very worried about people getting arrested for things they didn't know could get them in trouble.
Not only that but it also makes dating more difficult for people with intellectual disabilities who actually WANT intimate relationships.

      Google English translation from Croco:
Let me explain for a moment... There is still a conservative side to homosexuality in Korea.
And the scene about Park Won-soon was controversial because it had political nuances...
Since season 1 was shot so well and remains a masterpiece, I think season 2 will treat Youngwoo like a superhero.
It seems like you're going to be disappointed, you seem worried... but I have a different opinion...
Of course, I think I can show the character of Youngwoo with extraordinary abilities, but
The director's intention for this drama was to express the autistic people's difficulties rather than superheroes.
Overseas, the translation of the title in English will be different, but in Korea, it is "Strange Lawyer Woo Young-woo".
As the title suggests, Youngwoo is strange but not strange, ordinary but not ordinary.
It implies that they are no different from ordinary people.
Youngwoo, who is not a superhero, is an ordinary, ordinary person that we think is strange.
The title to throw a message to society is "Strange Lawyer Woo Young-woo".
So I don't know how it will unfold in season 2
I hope you look forward to Season 2, which takes place while imagining Youngwoo growing older and raising a child.
I had so much fun watching the video.
