Pigeons: the secret heroes of World War I honoured in art installation

Fifteen hundred LED-lit pigeons released into the skies over east London in homage to the crucial role the birds played during the First World War.
We went to an abandoned driving range on the banks of the Thames Estuary to meet the American artist Duke Riley and the pigeons.

saw this on tonights c4 news, very enlightening article. I have to confess something.. once, when i was about 10. there was a big basket of pigeons on the platform station at Swindon, and I just had a brand new shiny penknife for my birthday.. i was looking for things to try it out on .. when no one was looking, I cut the string on the top of the basket, and opened the lid.. about 50 pigeons flew out, and, I'm guessing flew straight back to their loft in Swindon. I'm glad I got that off my chest.. no harm done I think. I've still got that penknife 50 years on.

Ironically pigeons are cursed when they eat the feed left out by pensioners "for the birds"
