Feel blessed to have had the astonishing Island Records soundtrack to my formative years and beyond
I have been a freelance sound recordist for 15 years and this is still the **GREATEST** shoot I have ever recorded audio for. RIP Toots!
Island Records Is Great. 😊♥️
I worked for Sonet in Denmark in the eighties. I too am proud to have done my tiny part for Island Records and all the associated labels.
An absolute hero of mine Chris Blackwell. What a Label!
I grew up hearing Island's artists like Roxy Music, Sparks, Bob Marley, Desmond Dekker, Jimmy Cliff, Cat Stevens, King Crimson, U2, Free, Linton Kwensi Johnson, Grace Jones, Lee Perry and many others. Island was the most important label of the History of popular music.

I'm so proud of having been a tiny part of this story. Favourite label I've ever worked with! Thank you for sharing.
Steve Winwood was the cornerstone of Island Records. Blackwell stated so in his Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame speech. All the other talent wanted to be with Island, because Steve was there. Chris is a visionary Genius.....
Thank you Mr. Blackwell for founding what is today Island Records. Island Records, please let your legacy and music live on!
What a great visionary and being a Reggae fanatic ,I'm grateful for Cris putting Reggae and Bob Marley on the music map
Evangelist ROGER MANSOUR former manager of Junior Braitwaite from the original WAILERS
It's amazing what a good old passion, drive and a spice of loving what you do can achieve, honestly awesome stuff....something for the old, young and unborn should and could learn from
one love
Thank you for putting this documentary online! I used to listen to the 2xLP 'Various - The Island Story 1962-1987 25th Anniversary' back in my teenage years. 🙂
Best artists, great music!
Knowing what legacy island records has to this day, I wanted to get an in depth look at it's rise to fame and inspired such diversity across so many genres of music culture. This BBC documentary covers all those crossovers which prove panicle turning points in music history giving the viewer a feel good factor especially one who was buying into what was seen at the time ground breaking and alternative.
Thanks for the sounds that came in to my ears , in to my heart from your recordings..
Greetings from Greece

So many musical artist who are very missed here! For the most part amazing music!
Nice music 🎶 cool
a great document and a great company. I found the link to this from our Finnish music magazine. Amazing job by Chris and of course others too. R.i.p. Chris' mother Blanche who passed away this month at the age of 104.
Which magazine was it Samppa?
so great that you have LKJ in here. Such an importnat voice in Britans culture and politics √ ♥️🧡💛
A great record label with such rich history
Wow amazing.
So in his small way he was exporting Jamaican music, to Jamaicans living in England.
This is really good stuff, thrilled it popped up.
top-a-top !!! thank you Island records
Thanks! This was very informative.
You guys are doing a great job 👏
YES! And free -- bless you son!
FREE
Quite possibly my favourite ( label too) and the best music documentary ever done. 'At the BBC' complements this also.
Thanks Anythingoes88!
Hell yes! So many great artists, I'm glad to learn more and strengthen my timeline with this documentary!
Glad you like it Matthew!
I wonder why Jimmy Cliff wasn't invited to this documentary 🤔
What a pity the management team didn't take care of Amy..she was such a legend and gifted singer by any means!
Dude ! A recordlabel is not doctor, dont be foolish now !
Full agreement regarding her talent. I'm afraid her issues were likely beyond what any record label or member of the 'inner circle' would be equipped to handle.
You’d seek out a new Island release back then because you knew it would be worth hearing. Island maintained very high standards. Their budget-priced 1969 sampler Nice Enough to Eat introduced me to a world of great music, and I ran out and bought the first two Free albums and Five Leaves Left upon hearing it.
Does anyone remember a documentary celebrating 25 years of Island called Island Life and presented by Grace Jones? I'd love to see that again, mainly for the live clip of Grace herself intoning the word 'Leatherette' over a funky dance beat. Me and my mate must have worn out the tape repeatedly rewinding that bit while pissing ourselves laughing.
I remember chl4 one on the tube from about 1984
God help us get a record label producer. Amen.
Christopher Percy Gordon Blackwell (born 22 June 1937) is an English Businessman and former record producer, and the founder of Island Records, which has been called "one of Britain's great independent labels".
Lol I'm supposed to be working ....I'm sat on my arse watching this ....I tryd just to listen but Bob Marley ....just gotta stop and roll one up ...I didn't know hardly any of this about island was a bit before my time but I was adopted by music as a young child I thought I new loads i know nothing !!!!
A vivid illustration of how culture has gone right to hell . Starts off with John Martyn , Free , Nick Drake , ends up at Sugarbabes and Whiny Shithouse
Hi , do you have the tube 1984 island special?
Yes..island records 👌 lov'it
So, can you react song Alip Bata (fingerstyle Guitar) cover Kiss From a Rose (seal) 🙏
Actually wanted to call FREE heavy-metal kids!!!
I wonder if they ever would’ve been free if they haven’t been Island records in the way that we know them now
THE KING SIR BOB MARLEY🏆🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Amy Jade Winehouse 💙
Amazing documentary. But the problem is that Chris Blackwell was racist to Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer. Shame that wasn't covered.
Of course, they left part out........
Racist? I guess that's why he promoted not only Bob Marley & the Wailers, but also a whole bunch of other, mostly very black-conscious Afro-Caribbean artists (including launching Bunny Wailer's own solo career, by the way): typically the kind of thing a racist would do, indeed... 🙄
@@fredvan6043 it was not me who said that bru. I got that from Ras Dennis
Says not available ?
There is no mention of chaka demus and pliers. What a shame
Not available in Finland? Is this only for islanders?
I'm on Eurafrasia, too, only a few countries away from you, and I can see and hear it just fine.
Nothing about Art Of Noise! They were almost as big as Frankie!
