  • The first historic warbird act, following the opening of Day 2 of the Flying Legends Airshow at IWM Duxford, by the 9 Hawk Jets of the RAF Red Arrows, was appropriately a resounding display by nine Supermarine Spitfires, formating, wheeling, diving and tail chasing through the sky - an amazing sight and sound.

Trouser-tenting goodness. Nothing stirs one's soul quite like a Spit.

'Trouser-tenting', never heard that one, but entirely accurate.

Arguably best fighter plane of all time besides p51 mustang, both planes powered by rolls Royce merlin engines

Brett Lloyd same engine but three different designs one is a rolls Royce merlin engine, rolls Royce griffon engine that powered the spitfire and a Packard merlin engine I think for the p51 Mustang

Love the sound of those engines. How many of the nine are Griffons?

I think 2. The first and last to take off. SM845 and MV268.

    Better than the muststink.

This is spoilt by the commentary. Why does someone think their voice is better than nine Merlin/Griffin engines?

Fortunately I think that commentators are starting to realise this. I went to the Battle of Britain show at Duxford over the past weekend and the commentator kept relatively quiet to allow the crowd to appreciate the noise of the spectacle i.e. 6 Hurricanes and 16 Spitfires in the sky together - I'll be posting my film of that in due course.

Indeed they did. I was there and have posted a video of the 13 Spitfire finale.

Bernard Chabert (RIP) suffered from verbal diarhoea. His accent used to get up my nose.

the p51 was twice the fighter than the spitfire had A mutch longer fuel range a little faster plus the packard built merlin was far more better than the RR built merlin

Because the P51 was built to defend a country the size of the US, the Spitfire was built to defend our little island.
