Kind of sad that people are now calling the 2020 rise of alternative fashion cringe. It was a fun time for experimenting with fashion and I still greatly enjoy the e-girl aesthetic.
Fast fashion? Don’t even get me started. It’s the brainchild of corporate giants who’ve mastered the art of manipulation. They dangle shiny new trends in front of us like a carrot on a stick, convincing us that we need to buy clothes we don’t even want just to keep up with the Joneses. It’s a trap! They churn out cheap, disposable clothing faster than you can say “sustainability,” all while we’re left drowning in a sea of polyester and regret.
2020-21 fashion was so fun to watch though. Mainly giving credit to the rise of TikTok, but it was so fun seeing how people styled many different patterns & colors, finding their styles, and the fun decades trends. had a great time doom scrolling lol
it’s crazy to realize we’re already half way through a decade! i lot of these styles i still love too 😂 i’m glad you made this video, it’s a good way to keep a record of what was worn
i know!! i’ve been spiraling over this, i don’t understand where 5 years went 😩 i love a lot of this trends too, i think eventually people will look back at the fashion during pandemic timesss with nostalgia
@ most likely! i know i look at the 2010’s with nostalgia since that was when i finished high school and went to college 😂 the 2020’s have been a jarring mix of with pure color or pure beige, it’s interesting to see!
Oh wow it’s really interesting how much was different or was shared between alt vs. non-alt fashion, i’ve never heard of half of these things but you also never mentioned much of alt staples either. Guess that’s algorithms for ya, now i wonder what big trends i’m missing right now. Seeing cowboy boots being an early/outdated trend shocked me, since theyve only cropped up relatively recently for alts. Also cargo pants being 2022 instead of 2020 like it was for alt. Hell, cargo pants have just been IMMORTAL for me, i’ve never seen them die down ha
I was thinking the exact same thing, like certain trends to me were put in the wrong year like with the cowboy boots and bows and even most 2024 trends but that's possibly because they became more mainstream later or earlier cuz honestly the alt trend cycles move slower in my experience but I totally agree with u
fun fact about blockcore: for years in Brazil, it has been common for people from favelas to wear football shirts in their daily lives. These people are marginalized on a daily basis so seeing this style go mainstream was a punch in the stomach for me and other Brazilians who like fashion because we in the favela, especially black people, are judged by our clothes but as soon as a white person wore it it was WOW AMAZING HIGH FASHION.
not to mention those blokette disasterpieces didn't even came close to the absolute divine fits that mandrakes and planet girls have been pulling off for years and years
omg thank you!! It was eating me alive not knowing, someone mentioned is a call back to an old 90s trends which i thought was super interesting as well
I've really made the checkerboard trend my own lol. My favourite pants are bright orange linen checkerboard pants. I love the colour blocking as well, I feel like my style can be described as "Clown who is also a librarian." It's so obvious that 2020s gay fashion has influenced how I dress and do makeup, haha
It’s interesting to see fashion from the perspective of different generations as I am guessing you’re closer to my younger niece’s age (im 40 but this picture of me is ancient from when I was 27, my niece is 18). It’s interesting to see things that do trend and how they relate to the last adjacent fashion trend that related to it before that and how the context of it has changed in how it’s paired and accessorized. It’s also of it how one extreme flops to the other. It’s weird to me how nowadays all the trends are extremely sped up and impulsive even but that’s what happens in this particular tiktok dropship economy. I’m seeing a lot of Y2K trends that a lot of people may not realize were actually Y2K like the faux fur coats (~1998-2000) and shiny textures (~1999 for pleather and ~2005 for sequins) and textured fabrics and animal prints (~1998-1999), but the wine/burgundy shades that a lot of people are wearing now and the long wool trench coats were more commonly seen in the mid-90’s. The lighter hair in the front that you reference from 2020 is a callback to an old late 90’s trend. Of the time that has gone on, I try to be more sustainable with things I get by thinking about the longevity and maintenance of said item, not just “will this be out in next year” but “how will this piece hold up.” And from the last time I can tell you, faux fur looks like crap and gets 100,000 pieces of stuff stuck in it not too long after (much like the polyester shag rug that my younger sis put in her room in 2003 that my late dog ran into her room, laid down and immediately claimed it as her own and it got dirty). And while some sequin things are made better now, anything with loose floppy pailette (sp?) style sequins goes to hell in a hurry once you get a snag on a thread and spring a leak of sequins falling off. I once located one of my choir mates in college on campus in 2006 by following the trail of large fallen black sequins that had fallen off her slouchy purse. You don’t want to know the gutteral laugh that left my face when the skirts over pants thing came up. This too is very Y2K sourced. Except the way I saw it being fashioned was a dress over low rise jeans (especially the thicker velvet dresses with a ruffle trim). I think this happened when the boho chick 2003 thing was happening. I think Britney was an originator of this trend when Crossroads came out in 2002 (?), and other celebs like Ashley Tisdale also did it. In fact, arguably all roads in Y2K fashion go right back to Britney. Just about every single time. And that dress/skirt over jeans was styled with that awful woven/braided tan or khaki colored fish net looking belt tied over it that fell apart after 5 wears. Or a studded belt. Now that I’m at the age of not giving much a crap there are some hills I will die on. Like they can pry my cargo pants from my cold dead fingers because skinny jeans from the 2010’s did absolutely nothing for me (especially higher waisted stuff too) and I love pockets entirely too much. And I don’t get the point to an beige old money aesthetic since it just feels like the misnomer of the so-called “effortless parisan woman” aesthetic that’s basically just a bunch of privilege and meticulous routines masquerading as being effortless. I do love the gen z draw to maximalism, which is rooted in late 90’s Japan as to origin (I forget the original name of the town and trend it comes from, but I saw a really interesting video on the origins of it and an interesting theory as to why it’s back). That’s really fun. I don’t fit the same size that I did back then when Y2K rolled around the first time obviously so recently a couple of years ago whatever I had left over in a giveaway box from finally cleaning out my closet after a while went to my younger niece which she gleefully gathered many items of and then she sent some other ones on to her friend. I hope my old clothes find new life with other people.
omg i just read all of this and i love how you can date every trend back to the actual year it was first worn, i fear that will be me in the future as well, i do remember my mom mentioning animal prints being big in the 90s, and i can remember some of the real y2k but not that much because i was a child. I loved reading this comment and learning more about when they actually originated, I think it’s a cycle, we live & we learn, and I’ll be you in a couple of years reminiscing about this trends when they come back around and i see them on kids. 💗
@ oh yeah, animal prints were huge in the late 90’s and early aughts Y2K. IMO Leopard print kinda hit first in the late 90’s and then it shifted to other animal prints like zebra print around 2000/2001. For a showcase of late 90’s leopard print, look no further than the outfit that Shania Twain wears in her music video for “Man, I feel like a woman.” I was thinking about that when the “leopard print shirt/outfit that won’t go away” popped up- or was it her song “that don’t impress me much?” It was one of those two songs. And some celebs really gravitated to animal print in particular like Pamela Anderson, as well as AJ McLean from the Backstreet Boys. The zebra print that hit a little later- I actually had a black and blue zebra striped button-down glittery shirt when I was 16- I often paired it with glittery flare dress pants. It was also common for the playboy bunny loving girls to wear a lot of zebra print in 2001 but I never got in on that bedazzling rhinestone and/or tan tattoo whole thing. Come to think of it, the patchwork micro trend you were talking about could also be Y2K as well. It has a different manifestation now though. I think Nsync really took to that trend a lot in 2000, even though Brian Littrell from BSB had a ridiculous pair of patchwork pants that he wore to the billboard awards in 2000 (?). I remember the fanbase talking about it back then on AOL chat rooms and while I liked his crazy patchwork pants a lot of fans… absolutely panned them. I think a lot of celebs like Beyoncé and Mary j blige also did the trend but paired it with double denim.
@ everything is a cycle too. I remember when I was 14 how much mom was talking about how 90’s fashion (flare pants, peasant tops in particular, etc) were definitely ripping off her “beloved” 70’s fashion of her teen years and that nothing is actually new. I think it was Nicole Rudolph? That had a video or more going down the rabbit hole as to the origins of different fashions over the decades. I think the bright colors and checkerboard stuff from 2020 i believe harkens back to the 1970’s and perhaps even the late 1960’s and before that I believe that it was a play on the bahaus school of art from the 1930’s, but I obviously wasn’t alive yet, and the one person I know who was alive in the 1930’s (my almost 95yo grandma)’s family lived in small towns and was going through massive hardships at the time (Great Depression + Dust Bowl) too much to know or relay info about a progressive art movement from Europe. A lot of 70’s stuff I believe also takes from 1920’s fashion stuff as well. I was looking through a “new clothes this season” section on a store some time in the last year, and no lie, a silver crop top popped up and I turned to my husband (the same age as I) and I was like “wait, what year is it again?” Because there were a bunch of silver satin blouses and there was the silver version of the green club pleather crop top that Britney wears in the “You drive me crazy” music video from 1999. I’m loving all the metallic and textured stuff making a comeback too. I wish I still had it to pass off to someone but I had a bright silver blouse my freshman year of high school and was wearing it in my yearbook pic from that year. A lot of the very metallic stuff I remember TLC and Aaliyah in particular doing a lot of that kind of fashion back in the day. I also enjoyed seeing the comeback of the asymmetrical hem stuff as well (whether it be shark bite, hankie hem, diagonal hem, etc). That part of Y2K (which showed up around 2000 and was especially very popular after the show Lost in 2002) did a lot of favors for short people like me. The hankie hem bandana halter tops I remember were banned at my school (we didn’t have a dress code) but that didn’t stop people from getting in trouble wearing those shirts under their hoodies. I also loved the comeback of the long slitted skirt as well, but I have my reservations about the quality of build on a lot of fast fashion modern mesh pieces in comparison to their more well made earlier counterparts. But overwhelmingly I can’t wait to see the next generational take and remix on stuff I once wore and also saw others wearing.
as someone who wore vanDutch hats when they were a thing 20 years ago: wear whatever you want, trends really don`t matter and everything comes back. that being said, vandutch trucker hats were never a gooid choice - back then and 2 years ago ;)
so funny seeing all of these trends going on in the usa in real time as a brazillian , cause almost none of these actually got to my country. Maybe you'd see chronically online teens and young adults acting like its super popular but the truth is that we didn't even let go of the skinny jeans, it's still all i see women wearing at the bus stop. Tropical patterns and super flowy fabric is what's been trending here for the last 3 years at least and it's not looking like it's gonna stop anytime soon
Teehee same floral patterns tending in Guyana for the past couple years now, slowly going away for more cultural inspired clothing now. Oh skinny jeans went out for more straight cut jeans among younger people, but the normal skinny jeans are still used. Leggings and denim shorts are still trending for the past couple years. Bows seem to be the only tiktok trend that caught on, but then again until recently ribbons were required for most school uniforms so it makes sense for it to catch on.
Idk if this is just me , but it's really only now everyone has been dressing baggy.Back in 2020-2023 most of my classmates were still in their skinny jeans. I've heard that baggy jeans were trending back in 2020 but I barely saw it until now. When I went back to school tho this year I was shocked . The fashion itself it so different from last year too. Baggy jeans , bows, new balance shoes . For some reason everyone now dresses the same too. I had no idea this was coming .
This video is very insightful for the reason that I am approaching it from a totally different side of fashion. I am into darkwear, avant garde - Rick Owens essentially. So I know these trends exist and existed, but never knew their origins. Great video!
Me gusta pensar la moda como expresion cultural y analizarla de esa forma, ya que es mucho más que ropa y ya. Adoro tus videos sobre tendencias y el analisis que haces sobre ellas. ❤
Youre so spot on with the years. A lot of people on tiktok get the years wrong for fash trends. And nobody gives emma c her flowers for being a big influence. Great video and im not even half way ❤ 7:43
i think that those pj pants like the ones at the start of the video are going to be very 2024, and apparently grey tracksuit bottoms are a thing now too
I was soooo close to buying cargos. I did have a checkered skirt in 2022, and a patchwork top (both thrifted) oh and my one maternity dress that got me through the third trimester was polkadot 😂 never wanna wear that pattern again I got sick of it lol
i didn’t think cargos were going to go out of mainstream style as fast as they did! but i love mine so much bcs it gets super hot in my city, so i love theem! i love polka dots tho!!
Some constructive feedback. Try not to do soooo many cuts when editing. It makes me dizzy and the video feels very disjointed. It also doesn’t flow very well and your voice doesn’t match up always. On that note maybe try to speak slower and softer. Take your time when talking and it will come across more professional. 💕
I'm going to show this to my kids in 20 years
i’m so pinning this comment 🥲
@alisonodette omg thankyouu!!
It’s like a never-ending cycle of conformity where everyone’s scrambling to fit into the latest mold, all while their wallets scream for mercy.
Kind of sad that people are now calling the 2020 rise of alternative fashion cringe. It was a fun time for experimenting with fashion and I still greatly enjoy the e-girl aesthetic.
It’s so crazy we’re already making videos like this
i know!! i’ve been losing my mind over the fact 2020 was 5 years ago
Fast fashion? Don’t even get me started. It’s the brainchild of corporate giants who’ve mastered the art of manipulation. 2020 was "indie" where indie meant pink and orange and BRIGHT blue or green, big, vibrant patterns
yess! it was a whole thing, i think it was also influenced by tiktok and the music that was trending there at the time, what a timeee 2 b alive
we’re expected to shell out big bucks for the latest “must-have” outfit? It’s absurd!
2020-21 fashion was so fun to watch though. Mainly giving credit to the rise of TikTok, but it was so fun seeing how people styled many different patterns & colors, finding their styles, and the fun decades trends. had a great time doom scrolling lol
samee! i find 2020’s peak pandemic fashion so nostalgic
Newsflash: I’d rather make my own clothes and rock my unique style than play their ridiculous game.
The white maxi skirt + denim vest combo was everywhere this year! Honorable mention to Tenniscore, Barbiecore and low rise jeans.
omg i totally forgot about tenniscore! challengers was one of my favorite movies this year
do they expect us to rob a bank just to keep up with their pathetic fashion game?
It's so crazy how trends occur every year now, instead of every three years
it’s crazy to realize we’re already half way through a decade! i lot of these styles i still love too 😂 i’m glad you made this video, it’s a good way to keep a record of what was worn
i know!! i’ve been spiraling over this, i don’t understand where 5 years went 😩 i love a lot of this trends too, i think eventually people will look back at the fashion during pandemic timesss with nostalgia

FRR AHH
In 2020 also that one heart graphic, in either pink, that specific green or brown. U know the one I’m talking about and it was EVERYWHERE
omg yes!! i remember it, i think i used to have a brown crop top with that heart
Oh wow it’s really interesting how much was different or was shared between alt vs. non-alt fashion, i’ve never heard of half of these things but you also never mentioned much of alt staples either. Guess that’s algorithms for ya, now i wonder what big trends i’m missing right now.

As a Texan I feel like cowboy boots aren’t even a trend but a staple for lots of people 😭

styles got more boring again when people had to go back to work in person
THISS totally explains why fashion was the way it was at the time! i hadn’t thought about that

I think you were mentioning Harajuku fashion on the 7th paragraph
The underwear as outerwear trend of 2022 is so interesting
i knoww! i was so confused at the time tho miss bellaaa can pull of anything
Many of those trends I never saw in real life honesty.
as someone who wore vanDutch hats when they were a thing 20 years ago: wear whatever you want, trends really don`t matter and everything comes back. that being said, vandutch trucker hats were never a gooid choice - back then and 2 years ago ;)
ughh idk i do have a pic on my insta w the hat and i love ittt, i matched it w my swimsuit, it was a vibe at the timeee, no regretss
I despise the Clean Girl/off-duty ballerina look aesthetic so much... They're literally just "beige moms" in the making.
i cannooott face the fact its almost 5 flipping years ago.
sameee 😩
Damn when did 5 years go it’s like the pandemic was just last year ✋😭
i knoww it makes me spiraal at times

Cowboy boots are definitely not a trend in America, especially if your state has a big rural community.
Me gusta pensar la moda como expresion cultural y analizarla de esa forma, ya que es mucho más que ropa y ya. Adoro tus videos sobre tendencias y el analisis que haces sobre ellas. ❤

thank you!! 💗 hope you enjoyed!
The pink cowboy hats were def Chappell Roan's doing
I was waiting for someone to make a video about the early 2020s. YT recommended me this video at the right time
I think Teddy Fresh deserved a mention for its color-block hoodies in early 2020!!!!!
omg yess! i totally forgot
i think that those pj pants like the ones at the start of the video are going to be very 2024, and apparently grey tracksuit bottoms are a thing now too
could be!
I still want that green dress
lowkey same, it’s iconic
I was soooo close to buying cargos. I did have a checkered skirt in 2022, and a patchwork top (both thrifted) oh and my one maternity dress that got me through the third trimester was polkadot 😂 never wanna wear that pattern again I got sick of it lol
i didn’t think cargos were going to go out of mainstream style as fast as they did! but i love mine so much bcs it gets super hot in my city, so i love theem! i love polka dots tho!!
anyone seeing that 2020' pistachio green looks a lot like 2024 brat green?
lol I remember the angel trend of 2020. I still have a jumper with angels on it from then. Though I never wear it 😂 💀
omg yess! i forgot about that one, and the mesh shirts w the angels too
Some constructive feedback. Try not to do soooo many cuts when editing. It makes me dizzy and the video feels very disjointed. It also doesn’t flow very well and your voice doesn’t match up always. On that note maybe try to speak slower and softer. Take your time when talking and it will come across more professional. 💕
thank you i really appreciate it 🫶🏼
I MISS IT ALREADU
Rip the three sweater vests I never wore again
So excited for this ❤
All of those trends and you didn't mantion the colour RED!!!!
omg totally forgot about burgundy! peak 2023

Love bows and ballet flats...thank God this is over. So much ugly, cheap, kitschy and childish stuff. 2020 and 2021 was just bad to me.
