I have been riding with the Atomic 5,0 about 4 years. No crash, but it has held up great. I see where it lacked in abrasion resistance. I looked into replacing it with a KLIM Latitude, and it may be marginally better for abrasion resistance, but the armor, vents and pockets are nearly the same, and I tried it on and it hangs like a sack. I couldn't see the $800 price tag as that big of an improvement. A major step up in protection means Aerostich, Motoport, Klim Kodiak, etc. I stuck with my Rocket and I now wear a Klim A1 Airbag underneath.

Interesting review. I ride with a Joe Rocket Phoenix 5.0 mesh jacket over most of the year. (It's quite hot and humid where I live.) I assume it would perform worse. One thing should be noted about J. R.'s armor. While the shoulders and elbows are CE-rated, the spine pad is just a cheap piece of foam. It's pretty sketchy. One should just throw it out and replace it with a CE-2 SW or D3O pad. J. R. even sells a SW-2 spine pad for their men's jackets (but not their female jackets ?) for ~$25 - $30 U.S. so it's not a big investment.

Found your video while checking on this jacket that I have owned for 2 years, appreciate the detailed review on the protection. Upgrading the armor may not be necessary, but the jacket material itself doesn't hold up to a crash. How bad was the road rash?

Nice post crash review of the jacket performance in a crash. Just curious, and not even sure you can share that info, was this a low side or high side crash, approximate speed when the rider came off and the approximate slide time?
I have been rocking the Atomic 5.0 for a little over 4 years and really like the jacket. Maybe JR can come out with a 6.0 version with Rock Tex material in the forearm area.
    Thanks for the update!

Great questions! It was mainly a low side but both front and rear tires slid out when they hit the "gravel" in the middle of the road. He was going around a right hand turn and the speed was around 25-30 mph. The rider made contact almost immediately with the bike crushing his leg (I'll talk more about his leg injuries in the boot review) and slid across the opposite lane and into the ditch. Best guess as far as slide time is just a few seconds at the most. I hope this makes sense and if you have any more questions just let me know. Thanks again!
