My childhood neighbor had a basset named dexter. He would escape the back yard everyday and walk to our school, find our class and sit outside and wait for us! Our school would let us walk him 3 blocks back home and trusted us to come back to school haha. He was the smartest dog I've ever known!

Never owned one of my own but my cousin had one and after giving that dog a ear massage he wouldn't leave me alone I even woke up to him under my covers he was very talkative but in a loving way anytime I visit he always runs up to me and gives me a leg hug

I also think the mellow temperament of a basset is helpful for anyone who is anxious and nervous. They seem to communicate that life will be ok, sleep a little more and eat well!😉

    • @cshawtyhill7055
      @cshawtyhill7055  4 роки тому +2

They definitely communicate that. Just yesterday I was upset, sitting on my bed crying. Copper was completely freaking out trying to get to me! Once he got to me he laid on top of me and it made me feel so much better 😭💜

I am man enough to say I was crying watching this video then reading your comment of how they read your mind. I haven't slept since yesterday. I just yesterday had to put my beloved 11 year old basset Peanut down. Been an emotional wreck since. I have had lots of dogs growing up and also still have a Golden retriever. But your comment was spot on. Peanut was like a best friend and was always there when I went through some rough times. He would just come up to me and put his head on me like he was saying "it's gonna be okay" on the other hand some days he would personally push my patience i know on purpose. LOL
They are their own person unlike any other dog. He will truly be missed. And even though i know nothing would ever replace him I think I may get another basset in time. Maybe "Cashew" since I already had a Peanut. Thanks for the video. Take care and long live Copper.

Also I personally think if you have a history of really bad depression a basset hound is for you. Cause they can understand and read your emotions better then any other dog. They will make you cuddle with them if they since your upset about something.

Absolutely agree that the relationship with a Basset is totally different than any relationship I've had with another dog. The way you describe it as being more like a relationship with a person is spot on. I kind of feel like it is a real parent-child relationship sometimes, because there's just so many layers to this dog. He's got so much PERSONALITY. I'm completely sold - it's all Bassets all the time from here on out.
(Also, he's so comforting and cuddly. When I'm sad or really anxious and have to go out without him, I'll pet him just before I go out so his smell is on my hands. Weird and gross? Maybe. But it really helps.)

Totally agree. My grandmother had two basset hounds and when I was sufferers from periods of severe clinical depression, the hounds would stare at me intently yet empathetically, saying in those states 'we know something isn't right, but we are here for you". I have never felt that from other breeds

I lost my Lucy basset a few months back to a kidney infection that spread into her uterus. Basset videos and my Hank kept got me through it but I feel you 100% . Watching happy dogs after a bad time at the end of your dogs life helps us all remember just how special the moments were before they got sick . I am sorry for your loss ! Dogs deserve longer lives and it is not fair to watch such a perfect animal pass before we do . That is why we have to spoil them when we can as much as we can .

Unlike Copper, my basset did bay as part of his communication skills. He loved my daughter So much, (after he sulked for the first two days when we brought her home). He was Super loyal and Fiercely protective of her. My daughter in now 48 and still remembers Stony with great affection. Stony was really smart, And Super Stubborn. Funny, yes, a natural comic. Super affectionate, and loved cuddling. P.S. Ollie is a sweet doggo too. I see your subscriber numbers are rising. Congrats.

Omg! One of our current Basset’s name is Stony! His Brother’s name is River. Stony River is a name of a River in the Boundary Waters in Northern Minnesota, where we live. They both needed to come home with us, since they were a “Bonded Pair!” It wouldn’t have mattered if they weren’t Bonded, they were both coming home with us never the less. These two are the youngest Bassets who ever came home with us. We had been Adopting only Senior Bassets for a long time, because they had the smallest opportunity to be Adopted. I think though, oftentimes Senior Dogs are never given a chance, and all Senior Dogs who we have Loved, have been great! 💗

CShawty Hill I believe my reply went to the wrong place, although I was coming back to you to compliment you on your Excellent Delivery if your very interesting subject, Basset Hounds! Everything you said about Bassets is True! Copper is definitely a Special Basset Hound! His calm demeanor during the delivery of your message was Incredible! He is absolutely Loving every Moment in your arms. And your little Ollie is a little Sweetie! Isn’t it amazing how well Dogs in a multiple Dog Home get along with each other. One time we were Living Five Dogs at one time! Yikes! It was a bit hectic at meal time, etc. But our Home was filled with so much Love and so much comedy. It was great! We have never lived in a Home without the Love of a Dog. Lots of Heartbreak though. The only downside if Loving a Dog. But no matter how bad it is, a Person just pours their Love into another Dog who needs a Home! Thank you fir your great video.... 💗

I've grown up with 4 different bassets (2 pairs at a time) and I would say that yes they are a handful when they are younger but they are the best dogs once they hit ~5. They totally mellow out and become the best cuddlers while being the best attention drama llamas there are. None of my bassets were afraid of other animals or children. Over the years we only had one male and he seemed to be the most dependent. The females were very independent and would like to go with out but Sparky loved to just be. He would sleep on the footstool to be right next to you and he always had to go with you, whether on a boat ride or in the car. He was the best shotgun I ever had.

    • @cshawtyhill7055
      @cshawtyhill7055  4 роки тому +3

I can totally relate with you saying Sparky was the best shotgun 😍 I guess males tend to be more attached to their owners then huh? Yes it was a little difficult the first few years but so worth it 💖🥰

TRUTH ! But there is something about that first 5 years that endeers one to the breed . They are spiteful and destructive but that is why we love them ! When you connect with a basset you will never be able to connect like that with another breed . I'm hooked forever . A helpless servant of the short and floppy .

When Richard went to work, Harley would howl non stop until the Toyota left his sight. Then he would meet him in the driveway, sitting patiently for daddy to come home. Then just like clockwork, let's take a ride. Everyday, a ride . Having to lift a Bassett Hound into a Toyota truck was ......
      Interesting to say the least.
That dog was the best riding buddy.
Jowls and slobber all over the side of the truck.

      Soul connections are beautiful.
Haters are like fruit flies and other parasites. Starve them of your attention, and especially your emotion, and they move along since they can't fill their void by feeling powerful through manipulation. The actual words they say change but the intent doesn't. Knowing that makes it easy for me to see it as background noise to tune out. It would be worse to be them and to come from that place. They would envy a soul connection and want to disparage you. Its not even about their targets, it just looks that way when we incorrectly assign normal thought processes to their actions. They are actually quite simple and that is liberating once it is understood.

@@cshawtyhill7055 I have no other way to describe the first 3 years of basset ownership . The test every nerve you have and show you just how little we know about dog parenting because Bassets are SO bad when they are in the toddler stage and unlike any other dog breed . It's that same rough period that caused me to love the breed though . I realized I was dealing with an ultra cute dog that liked to get even and who thinks like my own devious mind thinks when confronted with authority . Much more than anyone or any dog I had ever met on par with people more than dogs . Hank took me to the edge of what I could put up with and then threw me over . I learned more about myself then at any point including the birth of my daughter .He taught me how to forgive and forget and that was a lesson I needed in my life more than ever given I got Hank right after my divorce. I learned real love is forgiveness no matter what . Hank made me a better person and a much better parent to my daughter when he put me through that period in time but he also made my hair thin out a little . Lucky I am good at rolling with the punches so I kept most of my hair .

You got it so right that bassets are ride or die. They can be grumpy and hard to work with, but they’re like family in the way that you can fight over everything and at the end of the day you love each other to pieces. I don’t think I’ll be able to own a basset again bc I’m very very allergic to dogs (my parents got ours before I was born), but videos like this let me live my basset dreams vicariously through somebody else💙 Hope you and Copper are doing well!

My Harvey is so amazingly gentle and sweet. In fact, he's gentle to a fault. When he was attacked by a neighbor's dog (They were training their German Shepherd to be a guard dog and they messed it up and it was only aggressive towards other dogs), he would not fight back at all!! He had several puncture wounds, but he's a tank so that's all that happened. After all that, he's still so gentle and sweet to all people and animals. Even other German Shepherds. I don't think many other dogs could have walked away from that with only puncture wounds and mentally fine. That's when I realized just how special he is. He's, for sure, my ride or die.

He looked small in the picture they had online. When we got there and saw a 60lb dog we couldn't believe it. We fell in love immediately! I appreciate your videos. I'm learning all this the same way you did. We are his 4th and final home, God willing. We have a good size house, but it seems like it's not big enough for him sometimes. He gets the zoomies and it's a nightmare. Things are flying in every direction. He was being fostered by a Penn State student in an apartment. I heard a lot about his separation anxiety. We're still staying home with Harley as much as possible since we're both retired. He has some really funny faces too. Lots of water dripping out of his lips all over the kitchen floor is fun. I can see he's finally feeling at home, and that makes me happy. Love your channel. Tell Copper that Harley is a fan!

I was constantly bullied by nearly every other kid in my high school for the first couple of years of that school. Our gorgeous Basset Sam would know how upset I was when I’d come home from school, and was always waiting there to cheer me up. One afternoon, after a particularly bad day when I was beaten up by a group of 3 boys, I was crying in the backyard, hiding from mum. Well, Sam found me. She came up behind me and put her (very heavy) head on my shoulder and left it there for ages. She then walked around me and sat on my lap and looked up at me. She stayed like that, lying on me and looking up at me, with her tail wagging. I just hugged her and sobbed. I said to her, “You’re my only friend aren’t you?” and I could feel her pressing against me, hugging me back.
You’re so right about the special bond between a Basset and it’s family. Sam liked my brother and tolerated my father ... but she absolutely adored my mum and I. Sam gave back to us what we gave to her. I was always playing with her and cuddling her, but my brother would just pat her when he saw her - he didn’t like the hound grease that’s left on your hands after playing with her. I loved her to bits and she gave back that love 10 times over. No other breed is like them ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

When ever I take my Ernie on walks all the neighborhood kids LOVE to give him loves! He is so gentle and sweet with them. He is so great with other animals and cats too. Although he does like to chase the cats at my house but when he catches them he grooms them. Awe! Though I don’t think the cats appreciate it lol. They are truly one of the most affectionate breeds! My basset baby Floyd is my heart and soul. He helped heal my broken heart after his older brother tragically passed too early in an accident. We found out our first basset Elvis’ mom had another litter one month after we lost him and just HAD to get Floyd. It was meant to be. He helped heal my entire family and is such a lovey. We talk to him about his older angel brother all the time and I know they would have been the best of friends even though they were two wildly different pups. I will ALWAYS own a basset. Love the comments on they don’t understand personal space and ride or die. Your space is their space. And Chloe in her mind is a human not a dog. Only part she struggles with is the adaptability. I’ve always wanted a basset hound and 3 years ago my niece found a batch of puppies. We went to see them and I watched for the one that gravitated towards the kids.
    That was Bilbo.
He was the runt of the litter ,so he sometimes gets confused for a beagle mix, but trust me he is all basset and we love him for it.
Everything you shared is 100% relatable in the best possible way. I have never encountered a breed of dog that just makes you want to be a better owner until Bilbo came into our lives.

I have loved and had dogs my whole life; however, my basset hound mix was my "soul puppy". He was so sweet and gentle. When I hugged him he brought a new level of peace and connection...a level I have not experienced before or after he past away. He loved EVERYONE! Work people would go to my house and if I didn't keep an eye on him I would find him standing directly in front of them and nuzzling the work people while they were working. He was so much fun and playful. I get the adaptive thing. He would play if you wanted to play, travel anywhere, or cuddle if you wanted to cuddle. I will miss my angel boy forever...

Alice is my 2nd Basset. The 1st I’ve realized from a pup. My 1st was a rescue, who was very shy with other dogs, she loved children, and seemed to read people that didn’t like, or were afraid of dogs, and stayed away.
Alice is her polar opposite. I socialized her at 10 weeks with other dogs at dog parks, and she’s never had a negative experience with any people. If anything she’s to effusive, and eager to be the life of any party. She makes me be social, and I love/hate her for it.

We have a Basset and a Corgi. When we leave, or come home, our Corgi (Charlotte) is very vocal, so our Basset (Sassy) doesn’t do much of anything in those situations. It’s kind of like she’s just lying there thinking, “Yeah, what Charlotte said.” 😂 Sassy is definitely vocal, though, like you said about Copper. She always lets you know what she’s thinking/feeling. Sassy does get jealous of other animals, though, for sure. She’s not aggressive about it, but you can definitely tell it bothers her. She’ll start to “puff” her cheeks, as we call it, when she’s bothered or jealous. It’s hilarious and so cute. 😂 She’s also very smart. Her favorite thing to do is hide her toys (and our socks and underwear), and she’s really good at it. There have been times it’s taken us days to find a toy she hid. 😂 Of course, you’re spot on about Bassets being funny. Sassy is hilarious. My roommate and I both laugh at/with her regularly. Basset’s are a great breed for someone who suffers from depression, as they are extremely cuddly, with no understanding of personal space, as you mentioned. It’s great. I don’t know about Copper, but Sassy does understand personal space (only) when it’s hers. If I get in her face the same way she gets in mine, she sometimes growls, or warns me that she’s not enjoying it. She’ll even occasionally get directly on top of me, and look at me like she wants me to pet her, but then growl when I do. 😭😂

My Cooper boy was a black mouth cur and he was the sweetest most majestic scooby you could ever have. Copper was my 1st and only dog Ive had so far and we got him when I was 12. He lived only 10 years but it was because my father didn’t want him neutered and ended up getting 2 tumors, one engulfed his bladder and the other in his spleen. ANYWAYS enough sad. My next doggo will be a basset hound FOR SURE. Even when I watched your first basset video I knew just by looking at him in your lap and seeing how close you guys were, that I’d made the right decision. Personally, I loved that my Copper had so much personality. I need a serious cuddle bug, so a basset hound sounds perfect. I’ve always wanted a basset hound ever since I can remember getting the basset hound beanie baby I was obsessed with I named “puppy dog”.
Your Cooper boy is beautiful! I think I’ll name mine “Uncle Pecos” that song crambone song in Tom and Jerry.

Hello, love this video. Copper is such a good boy sitting by you, love the way your arm is around him the whole time. You're sweet, Copper's very cute and your Maltese poodle is always busy XXXX

Really great video. One of my favorite parts was during the ninth reason Coppers face. I feel like I can tell the love and bond you have with him. Keep up the hard work and best of luck in life.

CShawty Hill What can I say, I love them. They are all the things you say in both do want and don’t want, but that’s what makes them so incredibly loveable. I’ve never met a breed that is more adorable than basset hounds.

Im a grandmom to a 51 percent bassett hound who looks just like your dog. She is my son's dog (and family) but my son and Aunt Bee have a special bond. The best dog in the world!!!!

Have been owned by 1 basset. She was fantastic. Funny, stubborn and for sure a diva. Loved her and miss her everyday.
