The real key here is to have two monitors that have the same dimensions and resolutions, for example if your original monitor is, a 21" monitor that has 1680x1050 resolution, then you should add a second monitor that is also 21" and has 1680x1050 resolution. Stuff will then easily move from one to the other, without issues.

I'm using two displays, one is 4k another one 1920x1200, I have to sign out and sign in again every time windows starts, as if turning my pc on or resetting is not enough. Example:

Because in the bad old days it wasn't necessary, and speed was more important than scaling.
Fast forward and the hardware got powerful enough to support vector graphics at a speed that's acceptable and there were tens of thousands of programs written for the old model that would break in all matters of horrible ways if the OS suddenly would require everything to use vectors. And as there really wasn't that many really high DPI displays there wasn't many who thought it was important enough to worry about. So MS stuck their head in the sand and hoped for the best.
And then truly high DPI displays came about at reasonable prices...
MS has been working on the scaling, but compared to other operating systems they have far more baggage in the form of old software that people rely on to make a living. There are software using all kinds of weird tricks such as calling up menus and dialogs at coordinates far out from the areas you see on screen, and forcing pointer coordinates so they can "click" on buttons and select text fields to enter parameters while nothing is shown on screen where the user can see what the program is doing. Make to much changes to how the coordinate system works and things like that will break.
The tile whatever system with apps is however new and should not come with any baggage in the form of archaic calls to strange panels and dialogs that hasn't been officially supported since Win3.11, and as such those apps should be much better at scaling. Don't know how true that is though as I absolutely hate that GUI and do my best to avoid seeing or using it.

Well, it wasn't just slow in the past, it was VERY slow.
Like, a computer design from 1979 can render a 320x192 image, but I wouldn't count on it to draw more than maybe 1-2000 polygons in a second if you're extremely lucky, and even that's only if you can devote just about the entire CPU time of your system to drawing graphics, and nothing else. (in case you're wondering why that's relevant; vector graphics are 2d, but based on the same principles, and can in fact be even more complex shapes.)
Now imagine that you want the UI to be somewhat responsive; So... You're going to want to keep graphics performance at something reasonable, like, 20 fps at a minimum.
That means you're looking at between 300-600 vector elements onscreen at once. But everything is a vector; your window, all the buttons, the icons on those buttons, the text onscreen. (every letter when drawn using vectors would be a fairly complex shape, probably a 20 sided polygon or more.)
You quickly run out of performance, and your framerate tanks, and everything becomes really unresponsive.
And keep in mind you can only draw those 3-600 vectors if you're not doing anything else!
In other words, the computer can't actually be computing anything!
So... Performance is an understatement. And while computers did get more powerful into the 90's....
You're probably talking 1995, 1996 before they had enough power to be able to do vector graphics at a decent speed.
By 2000ish you had decently powerful capabilities to do vector graphics. (conceptually, vector graphics and 3d rendering have a lot of overlap, and by that point you had systems that could draw many millions of polygons a second, which translates to being able to do 2d vector graphics at high speed as well.)
Windows of course, by the year 2000 already had huge amounts of legacy code to deal with.
Mac OS did too to some extent, but apple simply didn't care as much about breaking old software, and had more control over their hardware and software ecosystem as well, so things were more predictable.

    Solution:
12-13 inches - buy 2560 screen and set scalling to 200% or buy 1366 screen and no scalling (probably TN only)
14-16 inches - buy 2880 screen and set scalling to 200% or buy 1366 screen and no scalling (probably TN only)
17 inches - buy 2880 or 3200 screen and set scalling to 200% or buy 1600 screen and no scalling (probably TN only)
23-27 inches - buy 4K screen and set scalling to 200% or buy FHD and no scalling
ultra wide up to 34 - buy 2560x1440 screen and do not use scalling
Other screens and resolutions - you probably have to use scaling between 101 and 199, and it would look bad.

What distro are people using that their scaling works fine on Linux!? jfc I have a 4k display on my laptop and tried Ubuntu 17.10 & 16.10 and the scaling is complete garbage. Many applications were flat out unusable. The OS had no option to change scaling behavior/percentage based on what app it is, only a static system-wide zoom (and yes I asked on the forums to make sure there wasn't the option hidden away somewhere). So any programs that weren't created with proper dpi scaling in mind (crazy common, even for Linux applications, especially for older ones) were either
A: Freakishly tiny, making them unreadable
    B: Super blurry
or C: Super blurry with some elements like buttons getting clipped at the edges of the window or getting smooshed together, meaning important things were literally unclickable.
At least Windows 10 gives the option to change how zoom is handled with every different application! Stop pimping linux when it's not handled well there either.

You mean the DE not the distro. KDE can scale perfectly. I use Kubuntu as my daily driver on a Full HD screen. Force Font DPI to 120 and it works great for me. Even the window icons scale along with the text since KDE uses SVGs. To be fair KDE has a scaling option but I've had mixed results with it on fractional scaling so I simply went for font DPI instead. Also, Unity can scale quite well. I've used Ubuntu 16.04 without any issues on FHD.

dude, I am fairly new at this cs programming and design development, say 4-6 months..Since, last fall...and after passing over some truly good themes and framework layout and design software packages, I just now figured out that my problem all along was not necessarily the 3rd party programming I was looking to partner with and utilize, but rather, my optimal pixelation about my hardware display. Although, as u said, perhaps, the programmers should play a little catch-up and plan for this, it basically boils down to a pack of standardization..Which, I now can truly see is the label by which most all of the complication about C. S. and design can be attributed. Sure, learning the mastery of all of the componentry and variables, including the exact details of one specific programming language, would indeed be quite difficult. Meanwhile, considering the variety of hardware, software written format using any choice of languages, and also, the inclusion of open source contribution, in all, lends to an impossibly overwhelming challenge to overcome. For me, it is simply what makes the science of computers so difficult and discouraging and could benefit by having some degree of unified oversight or governance standards to somewhat standardize the science. In my example, whereafter 100s of hours of painstaking learning, design, troubleshoot-repeat over again and a time, may have been thoroughly recommend reduced and advancing my learning, understanding and development objective. I should not have to engage the field, even though independent and without the benefit of understudy, mentoring, or peer support-except utilizing the vast web resource; still yet, to have engaged the field with such a mad obsession and determination while still only in this moment realizing my greatest barrier specifically was due to compatibility between hardware display pixelation and the configurations set out within the theme programs and related software packages. What is more troubling is how my CMS platform did not indicate any problem with that as the platform software displayed absolutely perfect and does so in spite of any choice of configurations upon my behalf. The problems are only revealed using any particular choice in theme or applicative software model, including: plugin packages, framework and layout design instrument, and others similarly. I started to take notice that this could be my issue whenever I noticed how theme templates offer various page layouts such as wide vs block vs grid vs full width. I even started to see some optimal themes dedicate some configuration options regarding display width. Then, recently having to utilize Gutenberg blocks in WordPress, I understood from also, trial and error, that a huge difference in layout templating was between flex and block grid based design templating. I was having an issue with the flex design in terms of the application of inserting columns and how when using flex-full width, and also relative to having a blank page or sidebar template, the insertion of a section block or column block would simply span the entire scope of the page height, even the aspect of the page located below and off screen display. configuring my template theme back to a grid base block package certified the problem, and allowed me to govern the block-columnn size, and also revealing "white" space unnacounted for by my block sections, sidebar, header, footer, toolbar, and my background and borders. The white space existed because my hardware pixelation out contrasted the theme design template consideration. All of which, problems are now solved by adjusting my hardware display. I had adjusted once before without fully understanding what was going on and upon questioning one particular designer, he simply backed his design and was not fully aware of the scope of the problem. I told him what I now understand to be the resolve to the issue and that is: Since sizing is fundamental to any aspect of design wether one is designing a house, tool, software, or any other application, it seems plausible and expected to have to consider options to manage such settings related to sizing. It should be considered making the first aspects of design. The hardware componentry should match the software and the user should be able to configure settings to match accordingly. First, software should explicily broadcast it's ideal sizing for its layouts, and then perhaps, offer specific adjustments to coordinate the sizes. If this is unmanageable, at least by broadcasting, the user could look for alternatives to suit the theme or layout sizing parameters such as adjusting the hardware componentry display to match the software. Sizing is fundamental and should be at the forefront in planning and building software for use among such a broad scope of users implanting a multitude of open source software and any combination of tooling of choice by the engineer or general user. So, that the experience developing or user engagement is optimized. I am using WordPress and as of now, the minimal dark theme and am seeing signs that I will be abke to complete my design for public accessible hosting sometime soon, after months of dealing with sizing variability. A couple of themes that did try to deal with the issue of sizing was Oceanwp and the Virtue theme. While both could be nearly fitted without hardware adjustments, they fell from my application due to other conflicts about my design, but did anticipate a size configuration in thier options for design. Anyway, thanks for this video...It cleared up many things for me...with respect..TruloveLiaison

Running Windows 10 on a 5k display presents the following options.
    1) 1920 x 1080 with a 100% scale and layout - blurry text, everything else is perfect
    2) 5120 x 2880 with a 300% scale and layout - sharp text, programs randomly crashing, lag, windows displaying wrong, screen prints messed up, old programs not working quite right with a slightly messed up display.

The worse is custom scaling, you can set it on whichever percentage you like, but it locks that into ALL screens, as opposed to the predefined choices, which apply on a screen basis

Another issue in Windows is that 200% isn't dubling the height and width. Logically at 100% 1080p, an item should be the same size as 200% 2160p, but not in Windows. Somehow it is slightly off.

Wich algorithm does Windows use for the scaling of program layouts?

  • @SuperSmashDolls
    @SuperSmashDolls 6 років тому +6

Of course, Apple's solution was much better. Just make all of the drawing and widget APIs on the system take virtual pixels. It's why they have far fewer pixel scaling issues. Apple also pushed hard for CSS's "px" unit to be defined in virtual pixels so that browsers could scale site layouts in the same manner. And then Google did the same in Android with the "dip" (Device Independent Pixel) unit.
AFAIK the "System Enhanced" scaling mode is roughly the same solution, but no application I've tried it on is smart enough to hand high-res bitmaps to what they think is a low-res display. And at this point, the damage has already been done on Windows; UI programming on the OS is already a total pain and a half.
Unless you use Windows Store, though. Then you can just use native-code XAML and bypass all these problems

Ironically, the scaling on the Surface Pro 4 makes it almost unusable, when attached to a 1080p screen.
I cannot put into words how disappointed I am by that.

Samsung Galaxy Note8 does the same thing on certain apps, especially the Google Play Store where text looks blurry but once you go into the home screen, the display looks amazing! It’s a software optimization issue, devs need to update it.

I am on a brand new , 3 days old Surface Pro 7. I traded in the first surface pro 7 because I was told the issues I had with it indicated that it was a lemon. This surface pro 7 worked OK for about an hour. Then froze, required update & restart, & then font went from almost as good as on other computers to blurry light gray font on a blurry mottled, with mottles moving, lighter gray background. Font sizes were often too small to read comfortably in addition to being faint. I tried clear type, increased magnification from recommended 200 to 225, went into advanced preferences & slightly increased font size, which made some icons & fonts larger, not clearer. Meanwhile I saw an article saying that some updates have been problematic & reading that I should update to windows 2004, which aparantly is one version more current than what I have on my surface pro 7. I also read that thee surface pro 7 uses PWM, but only below a 25% brightness. I get eye strain after 10 minutes of trying to read. I purchased this as my only computer. Is there a way to use Word & Excel with speed & precisions, & do research online & read on it, 60 productive hours a week without getting migraines & eye strain? Aparantly this has been a surface pro issue since at least surface pro 3. What budget light laptop with a touch scree should I get instead if the Surface Pro 7 can't be improved? Until a month ago I wason a 13.3" Dell inspiron with zero screen problems. it was 2 years old & died. But the screen clarity was never an issue. Would rather keep the surface pro 7 if I can. but not at the price of eyes, health & productivity. Any ideas? THANKS:)
