Very neat fan!!! Interesting about the friction drive. Have you had it apart to inspect and lubricate the mechanism? It does seem a slight bit "stiff" when you turn it and again when it stops.
I would expect that, since it's a ceiling fan, they would have had some sort of self-starting mechanism because it might be too high up out of reach for manual starting.
    Thanks again for sharing it!

davida1hiwaaynet . Hi.the answer is yes I have completely gone over it ...the switch is missing along with the rod when I got it... it appears stiff to start because the wheels make contact with the leather friction and overtime causes a dent between the leather and the wheel making that clicking sound you hear it probably started on its own when it was new but now is old and tired... blades have been replaced .the originals were cracked and beyond repair. I sold them on eBay for $300 which is what I paid for the fan.the rarest part of this fan is that it still has its original brass dust shield. Almost all are missing. Also it’s a four blade which came later and fewer were made before being discontinued around 1902

Christopher; thanks for the reply. That's amazing you were able to sell the old, cracked blades for that much! Sounds like the combination of stiff leather drive wheels, and a motor that doesn't have quite the starting torque it used to is causing the non-self-starting you are experiencing. Either way, it is great to see this fan running.

Yes I’ve had it apart.. The two big wheels on the inside are wrap with leather, since the fan mostly sits in one position and is seldom ever ran it gets flat spots on the leather causing it to be stiff as well as the little ticking sound caused by the Drive wheel making contact with the little flat spot on the leather.. i’m sure when it was new it had to of self started ..it just makes sense.. I hope you enjoyed the video I made it because there didn’t seem to be anything out there at the time .. I still have the fan..

Hi, I did enjoy the video. Thanks for the followup. Often older videos and comments are forgotten about so it's a nice surprise when a reply pops up unexpectedly. :)
It's great that you still have it, as well.
