    Peter Falk selected this car from the studio lot specifically to fit Columbo's style.

      This is true: my cousin's father-in-law was the owner of that old Peugot. Someone from the production company saw it and thought it would be perfect to use as Columbo's car, and they eventually bought it from him.

    The car and the raincoat and the disheveled ness and the disorganization, all of it made the audience feel like “that could be me“ and just like Colombo “I’m smarter than any of them but nobody recognizes it“. That was a big part of the show’s genius.

    One of my many "favorite" episodes. Jackie Cooper was excellent. He did a great job of being both worried and annoyed. Joanne Linville was also great as his wife. What an elegant and classy woman.

    When Columbo was on, we had no idea what car this was. I was, and still am, into cars and I did not know what this was. My dad thought it was a Nash Rambler, but we know it wasn’t that. I do not remember when we found it was a Peugeot 403, but it did solve a mystery.

    I've seen a number of zealous cops here in CA the past forty years. That and all too many "routine traffic stops" that never should have occured. However I've never actually had my car inspected so thoroughly as we see in the show.
    Massachusetts is the land where each and every vehicle get inspected from top to bottom annually. Here in the Golden State they rarely check to see if you even have brakes! It's mostly smog tests they care abt.
    So to that extent the premise in the story is unlikely.

      Only two. The original 1959 Peugeot 403 convertible, was sold when NBC dropped the series, and a replacement had to be located when ABC resumed production. During the NBC years, the license plate was 044-APD. For ABC, the plate was 448-DBZ. { IMDB }

    Columbus in the 50’s was never more than 10 minutes partly because of programming. There’s hardware and software. The 50’s TVs were mostly hardware and too small so they couldn’t hold longer shows inside them.
    Nowadays the software programming and larger memory with teamwork allows you to watch all sizes due to the chips and LEDs and Motorola involvement.
    The circuitry and transistors with programming makes the difference to make an overall racism free product.
    The primary transistor is the BJT and FET is the modern version of transistor.
    The types of BJT are NPN and PNP transistors.
    The FET is a unipolar device, which means that it is made using either p-type or n-type material as main substrate. It’s a racist free product. The jury convicted on all 3 counts. That should tell you something.

      Actually it was quite clever because it DOES fit into the episode. The plot now necessitated Columbo to get the car repaired. He was on the way to the murder scene, so he leaves the car at the nearest gas station which also served as a repair shop. While the car was being repaired he tested some of his theories as a detective. When the car was finished with repairs, the repair man working at the store tells him that they had to close early because they ran out of gas. He tells Columbo when they closed (I forgot when, but this was a very important piece of information that poked a hole in the murderers story).
      The repair shop scene is also a scene where one of the funniest lines of the series comes in. The repair guy gives Columbo the bill and Columbo, who didn't have cash on him, shows the guy his badge. "LAPD? Are you undercover?" "No. I'm under paid."
