Hi Tom, my friend. You are a very good instructor, very patient in explaining the procedures. I still like the shiney viking bag over the dull one. I wish I could do these things but, I have no patience for that kind of work but mostly, I was exposed to Agent Orange in Vietnam and I have very bad tremors in my hands. I have to hold a coffee cup with two hands. But, I still admire your work of leather and wood art. Thank you for sharing this knowledge with us all. Your flag is on the way.

Tom👍👍 Thanks so much for all the expertise in leather-crafting, the tips and tricks are going to help save time and materials. The tools are key in making professional fit and finish leather goods. Of course nothing can substitute for years of actual working with leather and the skills that are developed. You have shown us through the many videos of you making leather goods that the time spent doing the work pays off in beautiful items. Great video as always, thanks again for sharing your knowledge. Stay safe and healthy. See you in the next one. Enjoy!

Fantastic!, Thank you for explaining the type and measurement of the leathers. Most DIY leather videos can be confusing because they never explain about the size and weight of the leathers. Very detailed and easy to follow instructions. Great job.

You brought back some fond memories when I did simple leather work as a child making wallets and belts. In my mid-20's I expanded on those same methods to repair/replace parts of harnesses for my grandfather's draft horses and even made handmade show halters for my horses. My skills were simple and nowhere as skillful as yours Tom, I learned a lot from you. Certainly a very relaxing and rewarding pastime for sure. Years have passed, I just recently retired and had considered taking up leather craft again and this video has convinced me to do so. Thanks Tom, you're the best.

    Hej Tom.
Thank you so much for this video which is very timely. I am new to leatherwork but having reviewed some of your earlier presentations, decided to spend some time trying the craft whilst in Covid-19 lockdown. It is great to get the tips and tricks from "the master". I have just received some leather, tools, needles and thread from Amazon but will watch your video several times before attempting to make anything. I'm sure you will help me avoid making too many mistakes. Thanks again. Best regards.

Ford is a good choice, I had a1964 F100 that I rebuilt using parts of A 1963 and parts from old scraped ones and it served me well to carry wood and sheep and goats... The very best pick up truck yet I had to remake every part of it as they were already pretty old in 1985

Good Video for beginning leatherworkers imo. You pretty much covered all the basics in a short and easy to understand video. Good job!😊
The great thing about leatherworking is you can get into it and never even have to buy any tools. I've made entire projects using only a knife and a sharpened nail.
I've got a lot of leatherworking tools but for most projects I only use a utility knife, a hole punching chisel, a hammer, a needle and a ruler. That's really all you need to make a knife sheath. When I first started out I used an awl to punch my holes but the hole punching chisels really help you make a better looking project.
I've been using a lot of copper rivets lately and they really speed things up and are great for hard use projects like machete sheath. It's a lot easier to install a line of rivets than punch and sew really long lines in something like a machete sheath. Plus you never have to worry about your machetes cutting their way out and biting you. 😊

I got almost the same tools in my toolcase. Haven't found a decent edge burnisher yet - only the end piece of my bone creaser. But of course, it does not suit all leather thicknesses.
I haven't tried sanding the leather things I've made because it looks like it removes much of the leather patterns. But as you say, it's a matter of preference. And the leather fat I use is made mostly from vaseline and beeswax.

I have to reorganize my house when I want to make something in leather jajaja 😜. When I finish my sheaths for knifes or folding knifes, I apply a mix made for me made of vaseline and bee wax, 3 to 1 or 4 to 1 it depends how do you liquid you want, and it works nice to isolate from water. Considering that English is not your first and perhaps not even your second language, you delivered a very interesting tutorial and personally, I learned lots of things about leather work and leather working tools that previous to this video, I had no idea about. Well done Sir.

Very, very informative video "Tom" I have been thinking about getting into leather work but I have too many hobbies as it is and getting the leather here would be a pain.
I have however, made possibles pouches before using leather from old furniture and embroided all the buttonholes with silk.
Your work is impeccable and just another string to your bow of many talents.
I think every chap should have a little workshop where he can do his hobby and get away from the missus, my uncle (who was a test engineer) made model boats from scratch not kit's and his workshop was in a cupboard under the stairs, just like Harry Potter! and he too was a Wizard.

Cow hide is the best leather for belts saddle bags and wallets and the on preferred for sheaths, when you punch the holes you may use a punch and counting the holes on an even number you can make a seam as for sewing, coeur d'alène, patience et longueur de temps . I came back from Rimouski heights with raw moose hide as seat covers in my old Ford, nothing warmer, yet I had to take them out in the spring and I layed

Around the circumference the holes are more apart, English is my second language and French was my first. very different than the French spoken in France, American and Canadian English are very different from England's English. I think you speak and show in a way everyone can understand...Here, they outlawed native languages and fought a lot about predominance of European industrial culture over the inhabitants of the land... You speak a very universal English that makes it easy to understand. Haven't seen any critic about it in the commentaries. ✌😊👍✨💥🌹

The punch with the wooden handle is meant to be pushed down several times, until it completes the hole. This is a Japanese invention but the Chinese made ones have a very rough mechanism. The original one is much stronger, smoother mechanism, durable and sharper than the cheaper Chinese replicas but is much more expensive. You can get the Chinese ones for 1/4 of the price for around 10$, but it’s still better to get the original. If you are only going to buy one type of punch, get a set of individual punches and a pad to punch over. Rotary punches are good for speed and making holes for rivets, snaps etc. quickly.
