***** Thanks for the reply dude. Luv the way you present science, unpolished and completely connectable to curious minds. You truly are an inspiration. Even for a 44 year old fart like me. How's the mine coming along. Curious to see how much of the entrance you have dug out.
+Cody'sLab Check out MP3 Gain. It's free which is nice. If you produce a test audio file as an MP3 you can measure the sound level in dB. I don't recommend actually changing the sound level with this tool as it will degrade the quality of your audio. To that end it's better to change the sound level in some other program and test again. This will let you produce consistent sound volumes in your videos.
Things like electrochemistry are why I wanted to study Chemical Engineering. Organic Chemistry is what made me dump that option, so now I'm learning how to put a plain on air instead...
Cody just started subscription after seeing your video on explosion welding. I had already been watching u for a while. That was a really neat reaction to that, it felt very personal. You inspire me to be science oriented!!!!
I've always wanted to try this with Pure Nickel metal, as it's in the same Vertical row as Platinum on the ptoe. It also seems to have the ability to absorb hydrogen gas too, maybe lots more under pressure
Yeah, a nickel anode and a silver cathode. One source I found said that the voltage potential on one of the electrodes increases with the log of pressure. The temperature can also be increased up to the boiling point. This is extremely corrosive though. Don't touch! Vp(mV) = 1.5 T(Kelvin) log(P2/P1) (Vp = cathode potential? in millivolts) Vn(mV) = 4.0 (T2-T1) (Vn = anode potential? in millivolts)
What if you try nickel(it will not corrode in lye even under voltage, and some forms of it are catalytic) instead of Pt wire? You could try even nichrome wire if not having pure Ni, will you try?
Thank you so much for the information. I watched grant thompsons video on his hydrogen fuel cell but, I didn't quite understand it. Also I hope to try this.
I have a box of solar cells and I've given up trying to solder them. Even with my expensive, regulated iron and a broad tip and silver solder, they keep cracking. Looking forward to hearing your tips.
As you said bigger surface area = more power. i have hand crank rolling mill, i have used to thin out silver for catalytic oxidation of stuff. so far only acetone and paint thinner have worked for me. what in trying to say is thin the platin out like leaf gold or somting.idk continue your great work.
Interesting concept. You could cover the potassium hydroxide solution with silicon oil, to prevent the formation of potassium carbonate from the CO2 in the air.
it should but the platnium would need to be in solution aqua regia being the acid to use you end up with chloroplatonic acid... the issues you will end up with is the platnium burning off the copper...
Supposedly it is said that one can make an alkaline fuel cell like this with a nickel anode and a silver cathode. Among the metals, Silver has about the right bonding strength with oxygen for the oxygen reduction reaction.
you could have predicted your cell voltage from the half cell potentials (0.4-(-0.8))... agrees quite well with experiment! had you used an acid electrolyte, you'd have made the actual 'standard hydrogen electrode' which was used to reference other half cell reactions (as 0.00v) :-) very nice!
Cody what if you casted a sponge and put the mold into ice, then you pour platinum inside the mold and after a few seconds suck out the still liquid platinum. you'll be left with a maximum surface area hollow sponge.
+Liquid Metal (Lear) to make that work you would need a shit ton (technical term) of platinum, to be able to pour it, and to have some still liquid after a second of it touching the cold mold :P stuff's hella expensive
Hey Cody, I've done quite a bit of research into building fuel cells, and I want to warn you that you're going down a dead end with this design. You're patterning your cell off of the Grove Cell, which suffers from 3 big problems: A) Power output is related to the distance between the two electrodes. With the grove cell, you'll never be able to get them very close together. B) Power output is related to the surface area of the electrodes. with the wire, you're kinda stuck in a corner on this one... C) The grove cell takes up a LOT of space compared to other designs, so it's not easily stackable. Look into the Bacon cell and sintered nickel gas-diffusion-electrodes. It's a flat design, so it's easily stackable, the electrodes are extremely close together, and the electrodes have an extremely large surface area. Another big plus is that you might even be able to nix the platinum altogether. The basic cell design is two electrode plates, between which is a very thin spongey or cloth material that holds the electrolyte. Gas is forced under slight pressure into the electrodes, so that the electrolyte and the reactants meet inside them. PM me if you'd like more information!
2:15 I'm going to make one and design one for my laptop, because the battery discharges too quickly and the batter replacement is too expensive. I'm happy I took Chemistry, so I know about hydrogen fuel cells and how they work, but am researching further to try and design a small fuel cell that can work easily with my laptop.
Hoping you will do something on solar panels! Particularly interested in encapsulation. I think I've watched all of your videos, and I don't think you've ever detailed the off-the-grid power system on your ranch. Very interested in this, too. Thanks!

actually i sorta have an idea for a neat experiment due to that unit (mol/M*S*Pa^0.5) i figure that, because the external environment doesn't really contain hydrogen gas, it should leak out of a sealed container until the internal atmosphere is an almost perfect vacuum (hydrogen leaks out, helium is hardly present in sea-level atmosphere, and the next gas is nitrogen, which is 14 times heavier and will therefore not permeate through the container)
my understanding is that hydrogen fuel cells work by recombining the hydrogen and oxygen to for water and use the movement of electrons from this process to create electricity. question: where are the hydrogen and oxygen recombined? do ions travel through the electrolyte and which ones?
Excuse me Cody'sLab, can you list down the materials and variables needed to make this Electrochemical Hydrogen Fuel Cell? Am I allowed to make a fuel cell like this in my research? Thanks.
One question. In don't know any of these stuff, I'm just told to make something to present at school. Can this power a dc motor even at a low rpm? Doesn't really need to be fast
Hey guys I was planning to do a chemistry lab experiment on these fuel cel and was wondering about the independent variables that I could change to study the effect it has on another variable. So far I’ve been thing about changing the concentration of KOH on the effect of current change supplies with a constant voltage (9V). Anyone have any other suggestion?
Was reminded of something when I saw diy solar panels at end......Has anyone ever heard of using sterling engines as generator? I do not know how plausible the science behind it is, but supposedly you can concentrate sun onto a sterling engine with mirrors and it will produce up to double the amount of electricity then solar panels. Idk how true this is, or if just a concept. Comment if anyone knows if this is true/false. thnkz
Sterling engines can be used for solar power generation, but they are much less efficient than a solar cell. The efficiency of a normal solar cell is somewhere between 22 and 40%, while a sterling engine has an effieciency of around 1.5 - 3%
+Clyde Connors Sterling engines have a theoretical max of 40% efficiency to convert heat energy to mechanical energy which is better than most solar panels but by the time you have made that into electricity solar wins because you dont have alternator losses. Here is an engine that I made: ua-cam.com/video/H85DJwRyaIk/v-deo.html
A silicon solar cell is around 15% efficient. A toy Stirling engine is likely around 1-3%. A power-producing Stirling engine is typically around 10%-20% , around half of the theoretical max (Carnot) efficiency.
those actual stirling engines are not perfectly made they use the stirling cycle wich is ideal but their construction and build isnt the best and most efficient design of stirling cycle i saw, were the freepiston one using compressed hydrogen as themodynamic gas
+Mote of Dust It was a looping 8 hour time lapse. If you can't deduce what is shining through the window 8 hours into the night, then I don't know what to do.
***** Ok. Imagine it is about 11 PM. Add 8 hours to that. Imagine that time passing in about a second and a half. What thing comes up in the sky as morning comes? What very bright thing could be shining through his windows at 7 AM?
You can substitute nitrogen doped carbon nanotubes or N-doped graphene for the platinum For cheap proton exchange membranes you can use PVA chitosan h2s04 gel electrolyte. Trust me unless you are going to invest in a sputtering setup platinum will break the bank before you have a system big enough to matter.
why some fuel cells or electrolyzers can make hydrogen and oxygen without potassium hydroxide, from pure water? How much efficiency you achieve using platinum? I wanna know if it is possible to make a reversible fuel cell myself and if I can achieve at least 60% efficiency in electrolyzer and 40% for the fuel cell. I know that the state in the art is at 93% and 60%
Could you power a car with a bigger version please? much more platinum / surface area... foil sheets? Sheets rolled around a "spongey" material... H2 and O2 separate? Can it run on liquid H2 O2? Maybe the gas can not only "power" it but super cool something towards lower resistance... dunno.
and they say that there will be a war for water... solar pannels, sea water and decombining hydrogen and oxygen from it THEN recombining it to pure water is all that is needed! now if it needs minerals, those could be added later! so by building a hydrogene battery they fixed the future problem of water...
Hey, even I tried this with 4 cells in series and it's only generating a voltage of 2.6V and current of 0.11mA and it's not enough to run a 3V motor. Can you please help me out?
Sorry about the audio quality, I'll look into the issue. Perhaps its just time to upgrade my editing software.

look up nickel hydrogen battery. "The negative hydrogen electrode utilises a teflon-bonded platinum black catalyst"
Yeah, a nickel anode and a silver cathode.

+TheMmmaaaggg13579 Platinum is pretty tough stuff. It may be easier to dissolve it and and plate some stainless steel sponge by electroplating.
+TheMmmaaaggg13579
my plan is to impregnate activated carbon with platinum nano particles.
oh cool, i presume you going to show us, so im looking forward to that video
good luck
Interesting concept. You could cover the potassium hydroxide solution with silicon oil, to prevent the formation of potassium carbonate from the CO2 in the air.
This is like *the only* problem with Alkaline fuel cells. Pretty amazing devices.
Would it be possible to electroplate the copper wire with platinum in order to use the expensive metal more efficiently?
it should but the platnium would need to be in solution aqua regia being the acid to use you end up with chloroplatonic acid...
the issues you will end up with is the platnium burning off the copper...
Or just use a nickel anode and a silver cathode.
Great demo. I think if you pitted the wire by sand blasting, etc. you could increase the surface area.
Does platinum not react with oxygen at all or is it just extreamly mild?
+Justin Brown
Oxygen does react at the surface but is easily removed by other reactive atoms.
+Logan Bowers
That was with hydrogen mixed in.
+Logan Bowers no. There must be at least two reactants for a reaction to occur. The platinum is only the catalyst, not a reactant
Being a catalyst, platinum will react with the oxygen and release it with little extra energy needed
Supposedly it is said that one can make an alkaline fuel cell like this with a nickel anode and a silver cathode. Among the metals, Silver has about the right bonding strength with oxygen for the oxygen reduction reaction.

You used shoe goo to glue this together?
If there was more platinum wire in it would it discharge faster?
if you don't find platinum wire, is there maybe some other metal that can be used and doesn't corrode instantly when used ?
as normal I have very little clue of what is actually going on here.... but I can't seem to get enough of it... give me more.....

Are you sure the gas isn't diffusing in the water?

It probably is a little but hydrogen has a low solubility and the gas loss seems to have stopped when I unhooked the wires.

***** Ok. Imagine it is about 11 PM. Add 8 hours to that. Imagine that time passing in about a second and a half. What thing comes up in the sky as morning comes? What very bright thing could be shining through his windows at 7 AM?
this is so cool :O
Could you use a carbon electrode instead of platinum? or would that dissolve into solution?
I did some reading on Alkaline fuel cells, and it should be possible to use a nickel anode and a silver cathode.
Is there any sound?
Hey what solar cells did you use there at the end?
I know that the state in the art is at 93% and 60%
You're smart
0.5mA will totally light an LED, not very brightly, but 1.2V is too low for any visible LED.
Could you power a car with a bigger version please? much more platinum / surface area... foil sheets? Sheets rolled around a "spongey" material... H2 and O2 separate? Can it run on liquid H2 O2? Maybe the gas can not only "power" it but super cool something towards lower resistance... dunno.
What's your degree(s) in, I see you post such a wide range of complex things it's crazy.
and they say that there will be a war for water... solar pannels, sea water and decombining hydrogen and oxygen from it THEN recombining it to pure water is all that is needed! now if it needs minerals, those could be added later! so by building a hydrogene battery they fixed the future problem of water...
How is that wire called??
what gauge is this platinum wire?
Solar! Yes!!
Hey, even I tried this with 4 cells in series and it's only generating a voltage of 2.6V and current of 0.11mA and it's not enough to run a 3V motor. Can you please help me out?
