Actually, it's the other way around Kim dies in Chris' arms. The irony is she died using Chris' gun.
Lea was raised very conservatively. Fun fact: Simon was her first kiss.
After playing Miss Saigon both in the West End and Broadway, she went on to become the singing voice of Princess Jasmine and also of Mulan.
While working in the US, she also finished her studies. At one point before Miss Saigon she dreamed of becoming a doctor. She also shouldered the expenses of her brother's studies in the US.
There's never been a scandal connected to her name. She met and fell in love with her husband in the US, had one child. And like Waleska said, she is the Queen of Musical Theatre.
Miss Saigon is like a slice of how life was like for a certain part of the population during the Vietnam war. It centers on Kim, a local Vietnamese. She was sold to a brothel and on her first night, being a virgin, she was being "sold" to the highest bidder. It's a club frequented by American G.I.s and during that time Chris, with some friends had decided to have a few drinks. Chris sees Kim being put up for the highest bidder to have her for the night and decides to bid. He wins her for the night. So they fall in love. Chris wants to bring Kim with him when he leaves Vietnam but that doesn't happen. The American soldiers were forced to leave Saigon suddenly and Kim was unable to leave with him. Chris could not get over Kim but life goes on. He marries in the US but suffers from nightmares from his time in Vietnam. His wife knows too that there is a part of her husband's heart that will never belong to her but belongs to some woman back in Vietnam. In Vietnam, Kim who was left behind, finds she is pregnant with Chris' child. She does what she just to keep herself and her child alive but hopes and prays for some way to get her child to leave Vietnam, find Chris in the US so he could have a better life than the one with her. Events happen and they are able to reconnect but the man who is Kim's pimp refused to let Kim go. Kim ends up killing herself to make way for her son to be brought to the US to be with Chris and his wife. That's it in a nutshell. Others can pipe in to correct details since I'm going by memory.

Back in 1978 Bangkok, Kim joyfully dresses in her wedding clothes ("Sun and Moon: Reprise") and leaves the Engineer to watch Tam while she is gone. She goes to Chris' hotel room, where she finds Ellen. Kim mistakenly thinks she is John's wife, but Ellen reveals that she is Chris' wife. Kim is heartbroken and refuses to believe Ellen. Ellen asks Kim if Chris really is the father of Tam, and Kim says he is. Kim says she does not want her son living on the streets like a rat, but Ellen tells Kim that they will do what they can to support him. Kim pleads to Ellen that they take Tam with them to America, but Ellen refuses, saying that Tam needs his real mother, and Ellen wants her own children with Chris. Kim angrily demands that Chris tell her these things in person, and runs out of the room ("Room 317"). Ellen feels bad for Kim, but is determined to keep Chris ("It's Her or Me"/"Now That I've Seen Her"). Chris and John return, having failed to find Kim. Ellen tells them both that Kim arrived just now and that she was the one who had to tell Kim everything. Chris and John blame themselves, realizing they were gone too long. Ellen also tells them that Kim wants to see Chris at her place, and that she tried to give away her son to them. John realizes Kim wants Tam to be "an American boy." Ellen then issues an ultimatum to Chris: Kim or her. Chris reassures Ellen, and they pledge their love for each other. Chris will leave Tam and Kim in Bangkok but offer them monetary support from America. John warns that Kim will not find it acceptable to have Tam stay in Thailand ("The Confrontation"). Back at the club, Kim lies to the Engineer that they are still going to America ("Paper Dragons"). The Engineer imagines the extravagant new life he will lead in America ("The American Dream"). Chris, John and Ellen find the Engineer and he takes them to see Kim and Tam.
In her room, Kim tells Tam that he should be happy because he now has a father. She tells him that she cannot go with him but will be watching over him ("The Sacred Bird"/"Little God Of My Heart"/"This Is The Hour (reprise)"). Chris, Ellen, John, and the Engineer arrive just outside her room. The Engineer comes in to take Tam outside to introduce Tam to his father. While this is happening, Kim steps behind a curtain and shoots herself. As she falls to the floor, everyone rushes into the room at the sound of the gunshot and find Kim mortally wounded. Chris holds Kim in his arms and asks what she has done and why she did this, as she explains that the gods have guided him to his son. Chris begs her not to die, as she asks him to hold her one last time. After sharing one final kiss, Kim says her final words to Chris, echoing what he said to her from the song "Sun and Moon" ("How in one night have we come so far?") and she dies in his arms ("Finale").
So I searched in the internet because I had a different idea how it ended.. I thought Kim and her son made it it to the US, but they were actually in bangkok, maybe that is how they escaped Saigon, the war. But I was sure Kim killed herself to make sure her son will live a better life in the US, it would only be possible if she is not around involve in a love/family conflict, that they take her son, hence the song "I'd give my life for you" to give you a better life, I must die..

I've never seen the entire musical, I only had a cassette tape of the compilation (album) of the songs..
When I first watched the Philippines' staging of Miss Saigon at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, my whole focus was to observe every part where Lea was in and literally, she was in it almost the whole show. That was exhilarating, amazing and goosebumps everywhere. I cried buckets. The story is about love and sacrifice, and it is generally relatable.
OMG. Waleska has this wealth of knowledge and you know she knows what shes talking about. You get hooked to her. And Efras excitement and honesty to learn and to admit that he didnt know this area but hes willing to listen and to learn. I love this tandem

Actually KIM (Miss Saigon) kills herself so she could give her son (the GI's offspring) a future in America with his father.
The GI has an American wife and the only way for the boy to have a chance at a better life is for KIM to be out of the picture. Tragedy at its finest and a Mother's ultimate sacrifice for her son.That is the main plot point of MISS SAIGON. In fact, a picture of a Vietnamese mother giving up her child was the producers and writers' inspiration for creating the musical.
Actually Miss Saigon is a more modern adaptation of Giacomo Puccini's opera, Madame Butterfly and the opera is heavily inspired by Pierre Lotti's novel, Madame Chrysanthème.
Waleska was just kidding, she watched the musical so she knew the ending and told Efra a cliche tragic ending, she looked at the camera while saying that like Efra would believe anything as he got zero idea about musicals.
As Waleska disclosed, theater legends Cameron Macintosh (producer), Claude Schoenberg and Alain Boublil (co-composers), and Nicholas Hyntner (stage director) were the persons around the piano during Lea’s first audition
Lea won both the Laurence Olivier Award and the Tony Award on her 1st year of performing Kim in Miss Saigon.

Thank you so much for this wonderful video. I hope you could also do reaction videos on Rachelle Ann Go's international musical journey. She is one of those who followed Lea's footsteps. Apparently, she is a fan and a great friend of Lea. Rachelle had a taste of her unique international musical career because she was the one and only Filipino who portrayed the lead role of Eliza in the phenomenal musical of Lin Manuel Miranda which is Hamilton.

I saw the broadway one with Eva and Rachelle Ann Go. Chris didn’t die, someone else did die in Kim’s arms tho. And that scene was intense. But nothing beats the helicopter scene for the most intense scene. Everything about it was so riveting.

The tragedy of Miss Saigon is that, irl after the Vietnam War many Vietnamese women were abandoned by their American soldier lover and many half-Vietnamese-half-American babies were left fatherless, some even put into orphanage together with other Vietnamese babies who became parentless after their parents die during the war.. after some time there was Operation Babylift. Directed by President Ford with money from a special foreign aid children's fund for the availability to fly more than 2,000 South Vietnamese orphans to the United States. But shortly into the flight, a malfunction forced the pilot, Captain "Bud" Traynor, to crash land the C-5 cargo plane into a nearby rice paddy; 138 people were killed in the crash, including 78 children and 35 Defense Attaché Office, Saigon personnel.. during the war, US Army helicopters would spray Agent Orange all over agricultural lands in Vietnam; after the war, those who survived yet exposed to Agent Orange were (as many as 3 million) have suffered illnesses (includes multiple health problems, including cleft palate, mental disabilities, hernias, and extra fingers and toes) because of it; these figures include their children who were exposed.

Chris didn't die in a car accident. Kim was the one who kill herself at the end to give a chance to her son to have a better life because Chris was already re-married. I have watched this musical 11 times.
There's a full length show of Miss Saigon available in you tube where lea played as Kim... there's two actually but I preferreed the one with part 1 and part 2. There's also another one with a new generation Kim which is by the way also a Filipina with a similar sweet voice as Lea.

My friend was one of the original cast of Miss Saigon and had told us about everything that had happened from the auditions to their performances. I am subscribing your channel because you're videos are so informative. You are leveling up my knowledge especially in the field of theater.
No, Chris came back to Saigon after many years upon knowing Kim has survived the war. He did not know they have a son. Kim was told Chris came back only to find out that he is now married. So she decided to commit suicide. In her logic, she wanted to be out of the way for her son to have a new life with his father in the US. Sp tragic.
you got the plot wrong, kim discovered that chris already has family in the US, she decided to give her son to chris to have good life in us but realizing she cant be with chris shot herself in the head and died in the arms of chris

It was actually Kim who died so her son can have a life with his father, Chris, in America. When Chris boarded the helicopter and Kim was left behind, he thought she didn’t survive. He carried on with his life, married Elaine, but is always haunted by the memories of Kim.
Elaine and Kim’s duet is something to listen to, as well.

The first part was just like how they usually run their auditions. This was the final audition, and they let both Lea and Monique Wilson fly in to London for the final assessment. They were choosing who will play the lead and who will play understudy. Fortunately and by fate, Lea got it. Lea and Monique were child protege of Repertory Philippines doing musicals such as The King and I, The Sound of Music,etc. Lea played the role of Annie (Annie, the musical) here in the Philippines which made her famous for portraying it. Having all the training and discipline from Repertory Philippines explains her longevity in the theater industry, not to mention her sheer talent and very smart head. She was an honor and a valedictorian in her hometown school, O.B. Montessori. I have been a fan of Lea since she was around 9 years old when she had her own local TV show, "Love, Lea", which she hosted with her younger brother, Gerard Salonga (who is now almost always her concert's musical director and arranger). Lea is Love and she is just almost perfect and superior excellent in her craft.

So sorry....but the ending is nothing like described! Dont' really want to give it away, but the storyline is not what Waleska says. It is a beautiful, sad play. You can find the whole play on youtube.

I saw Lea’s Ms Saigon in NY though. Oh my, didn’t expect the ending but too many with tears and I’m one of them 😊.
Great job, as usual, guys! Miss Saigon is my favorite musical of all time; I've seen it countless times on Broadway and a couple of times on the West End. I used to take friends of mine who'd visit me in NYC to see this show, and I've taken friends of mine in the UK to the West End. Afterwards, I'd treat them to dimsum and noodles in both cities' Chinatowns to cheer them up a little bit because as Waleska correctly stated, "It's extremely tragic!" Unfortunately, I never got to see it with Lea as the lead in NYC although she and I pretty much shared time together in that great city at about the same time (early to late 1990's). As an additional tidbit, she attended Ateneo University in Manila, one of the two best universities in the Philippines. Also there was a casual mention of "Repertory Philippines" in the earlier interview--- that group is an INSTITUTION in the country. Its pipeline produces some of the best people in the music industry here. You HAVE to be extraordinary musically talented and dedicated to be part of that institution. I really hope you two would have the opportunity to come visit the Philippines so you get to experience musical immersion which will blow your mind. You'd literally be walking in malls here, and the girl or guy hawking a "Magic Mic" would stop you dead in your tracks because they sound so freaking awesome. Well, this has been a long commentary. Actually when the US Soldiers were leaving Vietnam, Kim was separated from Chris. He was supposed to take Kim with him to the US but was not able to. Chris was devastated. He got married but still dream of Kim. Kim gave birth to their son. Vietcom officer was in love with Kim and hate the son. He tried to kill the son but Kim shot him. She and her son was able to escape with the help of the Engineer. Chris was still looking for Kim and was able to locate them but not have seen her yet but the wife of Chris talked to her. What Kim did was gave up her son to them as the wife says and killed her self but before she died Chris found her and she died in his arms. It's a very tragic fate for Kim but Chris really loved her.
