It's hard to tell in video, but your cylinder appears to have been shaved for the 45ACP cartridge and moon clips, done by importers for the American market. Please don't use commercial 45 ammo though without a better understanding. The area behind the cylinder stop grooves seems too short and I think I can make out a cut-off serial from the grinding. This would also explain why your firing pin wasn't consistently reaching the primer. This also means the cases are unsupported during firing and are jackhammering the frame. People unfamiliar with older firearms should be warned: if it isn't running correct please stop shooting and assess why in case you cause further damage or even suffer injury. edit: timestamps 1:45 and 10:55 Yep, unsupported and flopping around. My great great great grandfather served in Gallipoli. He was a lieutenant and if I’m not mistaken, would have rocked a webley. Pretty sure he died there or on the western front. Can’t remember exactly. Nice video balaclava man

Got a MkIV (.38 S&W) from WWII at a ghetto Florida gun show years back for about $300. Might be the best value for your money, if you just want to own one to own one. They’re definitely more common than the MkVI, and ammo is a little easier to find.

.38 S&W is definitely anemic for the Enfield revolvers. Most .38S&W ammo is made for top break pocket guns like the S&W model 2 and its various clones, which have significantly weaker actions than the Enfields, which were made for the .38/200 and later MkIIz loadings, which used a 200 grain cast lead bullet, and a 180 grain FMJ respectively.
A lot of Mark VI Webleys had the back of the cylinder shaved to fit .45APC with moonclips. The result is that .455 doesn't have the support to fire reliability.

Although it cannot be denied that many .455 Webley revolvers have survived being subjected for a long time to standard .45 ACP ammunition, that is equivalent to having been fed a steady diet of proof loads. Simply put, it is a testament to the sturdiness of Webley service revolvers, but can hardly be considered either safe or advisable! It is best to handload these shaved Webleys with lead bullets in the .452-455" size range ad 230-270 grains in weight in either .45 ACP or .45 Auto-Rim cases downloaded to 620-710 fps. This is the only way to safely enjoy shooting a shaved Webley.
The helmet looks good because it looks very balanced. With a modern helmet, the wearer always wears it crooked and it looks unprofessional, but with the Brodie helmet it looks as good as a custom made hat.

There is a Great Australian Series called "Gallipoli". Was able to spend 5 weeks in NZ and they have a whole forest that was planted for the Anzacs that died in WWI, which is also worth watching (Anzacs) . Was really cool.
Hell of a revolver. Love WW1 era weapons and gear because it was a time where we were on the cusp of so many new technologies and you got to see a mix of everything. (e.g. horseman armed with spears with their gas masks on, bomb dropping blimps, first generation tanks, etc.)
Very true. The biggest tragic thing was the Generals were using 19th century tactics against 20th century weaponry. Hence the reckless loss of life of tens of thousands of young men who were sent too they’re deaths to literally gain a few feet on the battlefield.

I think the problem with your Webley might be the fact that your trying to shoot .455 Webley instead of .45 ACP. Many Webley MKVI revolvers have had their cylinders shaved to accept .45 ACP and when you try to switch back to .455 Webley with those revolvers then you will get a lot of misfires. I'm not 100% sure that is your problem but I highly suspect that's the case. Take it to a gunsmith and have him inspect it and maybe mention that to him. If the cylinder has in fact been shaved to accept .45 ACP then only shoot mild ball rounds through it.
In the movie Lawless, the oldest brother Howard was a WW1 vet. It takes place during probation and he carries a Webley .455. Interesting and accurate choice for guns at the time in the Appalachian mountains. Old milsurp
The webley 455 came to America and the Americans decided to slightly shave the cylinder so it could hold 45 ACP ammunition. So when you load it with actual 455 webly ammunition the spur on the hammer slightly strikes the primers due to the shaved gap so in order to be able to shoot 455 ammunition you need moon clips for the 455 caliber. If you do decide to use 45 ACP use low pressure ammunition.
There seems to be some controversy over the Webleys converted to .45 ACP these days. Many thousands of such guns were converted during the surplus mailorder boom of the '50s and '60s. They've been fired extensively with the alternative cartridge, and are entirely safe to use with standard pressure ammunition. The groove and throat diameter of the Webley runs .004" to .006" larger than it would be sized for the .45 Auto, and they have fairly generous cylinder/barrel gaps. Both of which reduce pressure. They were also meant to use half-moon clips or .45 Auto Rim in the conversions. Many Webleys have developed excessive cylinder endshake, and benefit greatly from shimming the cylinder back. Though shims have to be made on the lathe and fitted. That will usually cure any misfires. Mainsprings are rather stout. The Webley mechanism is also very simple and fairly easy to retime. But rather different than what we're used to seeing in the United States. Generally it's the timing of the cylinder bolt dragging a bit on the indexing notch as it releases that causes a perceivable hitch in cylinder rotation. The bolt must be elevated to advance its timing. The hand length will control cylinder timing.
No they are not. .45 ACP is significantly higher pressure than .455 Webley. Many Webleys have blown up due to that. If it was a commercial gun blowing up that much with off the shelf ammo it would be recalled if not have law suits filed against the company.
For those of you interested in WW1 history, check out the National WW1 Museum and Memorial in Missouri. I had never heard of it until I visited Missouri a few years ago. Reading the letters people wrote home really brought that era to life again. In many ways, I feel the joes back then were not too different from us today. It was a really great experience. And the people I met in Missouri were the nicest I had ever met.
Love the Webley. Heads up on the comments about the reliability and back boring of the revolver. You have to get very lightly loaded 45ACP, GIs tried to rechamber the 455’s but they weren’t designed for the stress of 45ACP. Use of the full 45 can crack the frames, 455 Webleys were designed to be used with black powder initially, they modernized to use smokeless.
Looks like your cylinder has been turned down to accept .45 ACP moon clips, as many of these old wheel guns were. There looks to be a fair bit of slop for the cartridges when using .455 to move forwards and backwards, which causes no end of light strikes. The problem is that even if you were to use .45 ACP, it unfortunately exceeds the proof pressure of .455 Webley. Your best bet would be loading .45 ACP with moon clips or .45 Auto Rim to lighter pressures if you want full reliability out of this old warhorse

My great gramps was a Scottish soldier from Glasgow who fought in the Royal Engineers from November 1914-March 1919. He was at Ypres, the Somme, Passchendaele, and Amiens. He was shot in the leg and gassed, and proudly wore his medals every Remembrance Day until he passed in 1960 from complications of the mustard gas. As a bunch of others are saying from their own toilets (we are not all in the same toilet, just to be clear) it was common for Webleys in the US to have the rear of the cylinder shaved down slightly to take a .45 Auto Rim case. That case was itself supposed to take the place of .45 ACP in a moonclip, for shooting the WW1 S&W and Colt revolvers without a moonclip and as such is a thick-rimmed cartridge (thiccc). If you have found some actual .455 Webley ammo (and it looks like you have) then those old timey Empire seeds are now too far forward for the firing pin to reliably ignite them. Find some .45 Auto Rim brass and try it in the cylinder, but dont shoot a factory load because it will be much higher pressure than the Webley was built to take. 700fps is the typical velocity you get from Webley ammo, compared to the 800+ from a US freedom boolit. DONT LET ANYBODY MESS WITH THE TIMING! Webleys do not use the same lockwork as a Smith or a Colt so the usual gunshop counter test for timing doesnt work, they look loose as hell although they are not. Somebody has to really actually properly know Webleys before they can work on them.
My grandfather kept his one loaded his bedside table until his death in 1987, in England. Dad used to tell him to go and get a license. He would reply along the lines of :"I didn't fight the bloody Japanese in Burma to have some bloody spotty copper tell me how to live my life....."
This is my favourite revolver of all time and I actually carried mine daily for a few years. These things awesome. Perfect back up for my HP and I even have a speed loader! Ps cool patch the brits will dig it.

This was my first revolver -- a Webley in .38 S&W. It came with the awful imported safety that I tried to hacksaw off on my own and failed at because it was held in with a pin that had to be pressed out. Ended up having to pay a real man $15 to remove it and presto! Could reenact WW1 in my living room.
This was awesome to see. I picked up a MKVI that was shaved down for .45 ACP last year for $150, mainly because the barrel didn't look safe to shoot and the firing pin on the hammer broke when the guy was dry firing it, everything else is in decent shape. Wish I could find parts to fix it. I already have a S&W M1917, but having two working .45 ACP surplus revolvers would be better than one, lol.
I have an air pistol Webley mk6, I live in the UK so can't have the real thing. It came with a facsimile of the original manual and it had diagrams of correct firing stances etc. But the best bit was towards the end where it said 'this gun is not suitable for deliberate aiming'. It was just designed for firing at a mass of soldiers running towards you through no man's land haha
Be gentle with her! She is nearly 100 years old. The Mk IV was made from 1916 to approximately 1926. Flipping her open and closed is very hard on frame lock up, it's not exactly new. Like other commenters, check the cylinder serial number. If it a compleat number is visible it has NOT been modified. Should the top half of the numbers be gone then the pistol has been " Shaved". Enjoy it and treat her right.
The British had smith and wesson work on the triple lock and chamber it in 455 I like to thank the lucky brits that got issued a smith got to truly experience a fine revolver and I remmber reading a account of a brit that had said hand ejector concealed inside a coat when he was captured by 3 Germans and shortly came under shelling when everyone took cover in a hole he slipped the 455 out and when illumination went up he quickly plugged them all a few times each da from a few feet away and when it went dark he slipped back to his lines.
My grandfather bought a belgian webley from a french flea market in the 70s. Basically stole it for the price. It's not shootable due to a missing ejector and some wear on the locking piece, but its nice to look at.

I have a Mk VI Webley that works flawlessly. I shoot Fiocchi ammo as well. Never had a misfire. I see other comments suggesting this may be an import shaved for .45 ACP with moon clips. Apparently, this was done to a lot of imported Webleys. Seems likely that's the problem.

The webley 455 came to America and the Americans decided to slightly shave the cylinder so it could hold 45 ACP ammunition. So when you load it with actual 455 webly ammunition the spur on the hammer slightly strikes the primers due to the shaved gap so in order to be able to shoot 455 ammunition you need moon clips for the 455 caliber. If you do decide to use 45 ACP use low pressure ammunition.
There seems to be some controversy over the Webleys converted to .45 ACP these days. Many thousands of such guns were converted during the surplus mailorder boom of the '50s and '60s. They've been fired extensively with the alternative cartridge, and are entirely safe to use with standard pressure ammunition. The groove and throat diameter of the Webley runs .004" to .006" larger than it would be sized for the .45 Auto, and they have fairly generous cylinder/barrel gaps. Both of which reduce pressure. They were also meant to use half-moon clips or .45 Auto Rim in the conversions. Many Webleys have developed excessive cylinder endshake, and benefit greatly from shimming the cylinder back. Though shims have to be made on the lathe and fitted. That will usually cure any misfires. Mainsprings are rather stout. The Webley mechanism is also very simple and fairly easy to retime. But rather different than what we're used to seeing in the United States. Generally it's the timing of the cylinder bolt dragging a bit on the indexing notch as it releases that causes a perceivable hitch in cylinder rotation. The bolt must be elevated to advance its timing. The hand length will control cylinder timing.
No they are not. .45 ACP is significantly higher pressure than .455 Webley. Many Webleys have blown up due to that. If it was a commercial gun blowing up that much with off the shelf ammo it would be recalled if not have law suits filed against the company.

For those of you interested in WW1 history, check out the National WW1 Museum and Memorial in Missouri. I had never heard of it until I visited Missouri a few years ago. Reading the letters people wrote home really brought that era to life again. In many ways, I feel the joes back then were not too different from us today. It was a really great experience. And the people I met in Missouri were the nicest I had ever met.
Love the Webley. Heads up on the comments about the reliability and back boring of the revolver. You have to get very lightly loaded 45ACP, GIs tried to rechamber the 455’s but they weren’t designed for the stress of 45ACP. Use of the full 45 can crack the frames, 455 Webleys were designed to be used with black powder initially, they modernized to use smokeless.
Looks like your cylinder has been turned down to accept .45 ACP moon clips, as many of these old wheel guns were. There looks to be a fair bit of slop for the cartridges when using .455 to move forwards and backwards, which causes no end of light strikes. The problem is that even if you were to use .45 ACP, it unfortunately exceeds the proof pressure of .455 Webley. Your best bet would be loading .45 ACP with moon clips or .45 Auto Rim to lighter pressures if you want full reliability out of this old warhorse

My great gramps was a Scottish soldier from Glasgow who fought in the Royal Engineers from November 1914-March 1919. He was at Ypres, the Somme, Passchendaele, and Amiens. He was shot in the leg and gassed, and proudly wore his medals every Remembrance Day until he passed in 1960 from complications of the mustard gas. As a bunch of others are saying from their own toilets (we are not all in the same toilet, just to be clear) it was common for Webleys in the US to have the rear of the cylinder shaved down slightly to take a .45 Auto Rim case. That case was itself supposed to take the place of .45 ACP in a moonclip, for shooting the WW1 S&W and Colt revolvers without a moonclip and as such is a thick-rimmed cartridge (thiccc). If you have found some actual .455 Webley ammo (and it looks like you have) then those old timey Empire seeds are now too far forward for the firing pin to reliably ignite them. Find some .45 Auto Rim brass and try it in the cylinder, but dont shoot a factory load because it will be much higher pressure than the Webley was built to take. 700fps is the typical velocity you get from Webley ammo, compared to the 800+ from a US freedom boolit.
DONT LET ANYBODY MESS WITH THE TIMING! Webleys do not use the same lockwork as a Smith or a Colt so the usual gunshop counter test for timing doesnt work, they look loose as hell although they are not. Somebody has to really actually properly know Webleys before they can work on them.

some folks cut the cylinder to fit 45acp. Those will sometimes have issues if you dont use moon clips to shoot.

This was my first revolver -- a Webley in .38 S&W. It came with the awful imported safety that I tried to hacksaw off on my own and failed at because it was held in with a pin that had to be pressed out. Ended up having to pay a real man $15 to remove it and presto! Could reenact WW1 in my living room.

This was awesome to see. I picked up a MKVI that was shaved down for .45 ACP last year for $150, mainly because the barrel didn't look safe to shoot and the firing pin on the hammer broke when the guy was dry firing it, everything else is in decent shape. Wish I could find parts to fix it. I already have a S&W M1917, but having two working .45 ACP surplus revolvers would be better than one, lol.
I have an air pistol Webley mk6, I live in the UK so can't have the real thing. It came with a facsimile of the original manual and it had diagrams of correct firing stances etc. But the best bit was towards the end where it said 'this gun is not suitable for deliberate aiming'. It was just designed for firing at a mass of soldiers running towards you through no man's land haha

Be gentle with her! She is nearly 100 years old. The Mk IV was made from 1916 to approximately 1926. Flipping her open and closed is very hard on frame lock up, it's not exactly new.
Like other commenters, check the cylinder serial number. If it a compleat number is visible it has NOT been modified. Should the top half of the numbers be gone then the pistol has been " Shaved".

The British had smith and wesson work on the triple lock and chamber it in 455 I like to thank the lucky brits that got issued a smith got to truly experience a fine revolver and I remmber reading a account of a brit that had said hand ejector concealed inside a coat when he was captured by 3 Germans and shortly came under shelling when everyone took cover in a hole he slipped the 455 out and when illumination went up he quickly plugged them all a few times each da from a few feet away and when it went dark he slipped back to his lines.

My grandfather bought a belgian webley from a french flea market in the 70s. Basically stole it for the price. It's not shootable due to a missing ejector and some wear on the locking piece, but its nice to look at.

I have a Mk VI Webley that works flawlessly. I shoot Fiocchi ammo as well. Never had a misfire. I see other comments suggesting this may be an import shaved for .45 ACP with moon clips. Apparently, this was done to a lot of imported Webleys. Seems likely that's the problem.
