I have a 55 litre which has thousands of shrimps. I also have 3 Moscow White Guppies and a load of enders. I can't say that I've seen any decrease in the number of shrimps but that could be that I feed twice a day - tubifex, daphnia and powdered gammarus along with flake and micro pellets. The tank also has a layer of Christmas moss which is about 4" deep and most of the baby shrimps live in that. I've never seen any of my guppies attempt to eat shrimps but they are quite aggressive with each other. I removed all of the female guppies and they go into the goldfish tank.

Good one, Mark. I set up most of my tanks with the sole intention of being guppy and endler tanks and set aside a couple of 20g to try out these different color cherry shrimp. Now its all but a couple shrimp tanks lol. And had loads and loads of shrimp with guppies and endlers. My 75g red shrimp tank used to have probably over 300 to 500 tiger endlers, and probably 500 shrimp. Took the endlers out and had 1000s in a few months. But for sure as a hobbyist and not worried about making more shrimp, but just to have tank with loads of guppies/endlers and loads of shrimp is super awesome and very enjoyable.
Couple caveats I have come across with keeping them together. Really large guppy lines, like super high-end lines that have been bred to be monsters, will completely devastate a shrimp tank. Had some Roebuck full reds, biggest guppies I ever seen in my life. They hunted, killed, and ate adult shrimp in packs, all my other guppy and endler lines have coexisted with shrimp. Another issue is guppies can come with some really bad nasties that are super hard to get rid of. I personally dealt with horrible internal parasite issues for 2 years after getting a couple lines with calamanus worms. Bombed and bombed those tanks repeatedly with meds to finally get rid of it once and for all. Shrimp aint fazed by 1 dose of most meds, but repeated over and over again, the shrimp really start suffering.

That's quite a dense looking pond as well which probably helps the cause a hell of a lot.

I have kept Pygmy Corys in my neocaridina shrimp tanks for years. They seem harmless as my shrimp population explodes all year. And they are an attractive little fish which adds another level of interest to my shrimp tanks.

I have 2 shrimp tanks 1 with Pygmy’s 1 without the 1 with has been way more successful might just be a coincidence but makes me think there might be a benefit to having other life forms around both tanks also have chili rasbora

Excellant and great timing mark, I just received my first endlers I’ve ever had recently. I doubt I’ll keep them with my neocaradinas ,but if that changes I will do the same as you have. Thank you.

I gave up on shrimp :( I added some baby pleco to my 10 gallon and stuck a breeder box in there with baby guppies! My pest snails exploded as well ! I got a bit lazy for a week or 2 and lost all my shrimp babys and all ! Well 2 shrimp survived but I gave up lol it's now baby beta tank ! The 2 shrimp still alive but it was total bummer to lose baby and all ! I think the bio load or pleco waste ext killed them ! I have other tanks of fish but my shrimp tank no more :( but I like watching your videos so no worries there 👍🏻

I was actually curious as to your statement “we will probably see a decrease in size of the bigger shrimp as well “. Is this because of the reduced lifespan with the temperature increase? @ 6:38 roughly

    • @MarksShrimpTanks
      @MarksShrimpTanks  Рік тому +2

more shrimp always means a reduction in size as a population reaches its limits in the tanks size.

Do you think adopting the same strategy for regular guppys (which are in average bigger than endlers) will be as effective or that would be pushing it too far?

All of my guppy tanks besides one has successful neo shrimp colonies in them. This one particular guppy group, I moved out of a 15 gallon cube into this 20 gal long that had only had cherry shrimp in it for over 3 years. Needless to say the tiny wildlife copepod types were very well established....along with rock piles and wood and plants.
This particular group of guppies decided all natural diet was the way to go. 4 females and 1 male decimated that colony of probably over 200 shrimp to nothing.
To this day, they still prefer foraging and even pecking at biofilm on the glass over processed fish food....will eat it as an after thought ..and when they get around to it.
Mostly it works if you have plenty of hiding places....but there's always an exception. I always keep shrimp only tanks and don't rely on fish/ shrimp colony breeding alone.
My tetra tank has not managed to do the damage those 5 guppies did to a shrimp colony. If possible, I think it's good for the ecology of the tank to have them with your fish....Just don't start with your prized collection...or a fresh bunch you just bought. Every fish and/or group of fish even within same species is different.
It's nice to watch when it works though. Most aren't complete genocidal maniacs. 🙄😜

@@lifewithnikka7440 Thanks for sharing! I am running out of tanks because I started a breeding project to purify some full black moscow guppys. Given your experience, at most I will only try to have a few blue dream neos in the first stage fry tank (1 month old or less). That should be safe enough.

Rock piles help a lot when keeping shrimp and fish together. All my fish tanks have shrimp, but none of my shrimp tanks have fish. 😜
Mexican Beach pebbles and river rocks from the hardware store 1 to 3 inches work great for this.
Add some epiphyte plants and/ or mosses to your mounds and after a bit, it doesn't look to bad.
Nice little Shrimp Sanctuary City for those smart enough to use it, and more surface area for biofilm. Win, win!! 😁

@@MarksShrimpTanks Credit has to go to Lucas Bretz.. It truly works wonders in any aquarium with Neocaridinas. When you start researching horticulture, it really makes sense. Bacteria breaks down everything ..even rocks....and that is what the plants and tiny critters in nature utilize.
I'm honestly trying to get away from ceramics and plastic media. Over the years, my theory is leaning more towards the bacteria itself and biofilm doing better on things from nature ..whether rocks, wood, leaves...etc.
Obviously, it's impossible to get completely away....but am moving towards UGF box type filters using pebbles for my shrimp tanks....and changed by canister filter media to pebbles as well on my larger fish tank ....
Strangely, I'm seeing better water clarity in that tank especially....Still have the sponge intake filter, but nothing in the canister but pebbles. 🤔☺️

Did all pebble acceptable? I heard some pebbles can raise ph, it seems one my tank had that problem.

@@fadillah6014 My local lawn and garden store sells bags of river rocks 1 to 3 inches. Those work really well. I also use Mexican beach pebbles in the same sizes. I just remove the ones that have a lot of white in them. If concerned or unsure, you can dip a stone in white vinegar. If it bubbles, anywhere on stone, it has calcium carbonate. Okko (dragon stone) works really well, but it's also more expensive. I've also seen Mark make piles with ceramic filter media.
For my filters, I use smaller river rock gravel from same lawn and garden store. It would definitely depend on what you have available in your area.
      Hope that helps. ☺️☺️☺️

I've found it's only the female endlers and female guppies that devour your shrimplets. I have had more success with female betta fish with shrimps and a paradise fish with shrimps than either guppies or endlers. Obviously there's a lot of difference to having one predatory fish in with shrimp than a whole shoal of fish!
