This baroque masterpiece is given the lush romantic treatment by Stokowski and full orchestral strings - a very special arrangement and superb conducting by Stokowski. He was a great conductor and deserves to be held in higher esteem than a considerable number of famous names in the conducting world. His conducting technique is a masterclass for aspiring young conductors.
This is the best version of this piece wauw Stokovski just makes music history here!! Incredible emotional musical version. Very unique !! So full of sorrow , and deep feeling. And then stokovskis own arrangement. This can´t be played better. *******
Am here listening with tears dropping, in September 2022 following the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Stowkowski, like Purcell, was British. As a youngster he studied with Sir Frederick Bridge, Organist of Westminster Abbey and became assistant to Sir Henry Walford Davies, Master of the King's Music. He was steeped in the tradition of British music. Finest arrangement of Dido's Lament there has ever been made.
This arrangement for strings has become quite popular on disc with other conductors. Stokowski himself recorded it twice: in 1950 for RCA (reissued on Pristine Audio PASC 442) and with the RPO on Newton Classics (8802025). Jose Serebrier recorded it for Naxos with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, while Matthias Bamert and the BBC Philharmonic recorded it for Chandos. Both Serebrier and Bamert had been Stokowski's Associate Conductors at the American Symphony Orchestra. Other recordings of this music have been made by Richard Egarr and the Brussels Philharmonic and by Iona Brown and the Academy of St. Martins in the Fields. Many of these are here on You Tube, so keep a look-out!
Truly Wonderful, yet without bias offence or critique to Paolo, , this identical piece of film & recording can also be found with much better sound { for those who would like } & thereby enjoyment on Y'tube Vid " The Art of Conducting"-Great Conductors of the past'-and 'When I am laid' starts @1hr 10 min.07 secs, with first, some revealing comment by L-Stowlowski himself. Note; Purcell wrote this in 1688 & it was perfomed in 1689. It is staggering to think/ consider, that this melody, the chords & harmony, and his artistic level of development was attained, when J.S.Bach was only 3 yrs old at the time.
last9bars Yes, it is he. He joined the BBC SO in the early 1930s as principal cellist and played under the greatest conductors in the world including Toscanini, Walter, Elgar, Strauss etc.

i admire his works for bach and purcell
Bello, bello , bello il perfetto suono degli archi. Stupenda la parte del primo violoncello. Si arriva alla commozione.

a rarity - I wonder who the cellist was?
Cellist is probably Ambrose Gauntlet

Simon & Tara -- glad we have the interest to put a name to these historic video clips. I believe his nickname was "Peter Pan" in the business....
