(Can’t speak for everyone) Men probably should be paid more because they will be seen as the muscle. * If you’re lucky you’ll have team players who balance out the work. There are many pts who decline male caregivers so it balances out in away. The cattiness is sad, and it’s the reason why some of us prefer to work with the men. Men are more quiet, and less drama. Men are also more logical than emotional, and tend to think quicker on their feet…
Well, I'm Chilean and I'm a head professional male nurse in a Public General Emergency Service with high demand for adults and children care (I work just with 12 assistants and 2 general physicians). I have always considered that macho concepts should be left out of our work, both in men and women. But there are also gender-specific features that allow and help the team to provide better nursing care for each specific patient. "Safe hands and affectionate treatment" requires study and permanent interest in being the best therapeutic aid, and being effective in achieving institutional objectives.
Went to nursing school out of the Army in 1974 there was one other male in my class of 120. When I was asked why I wanted to be a nurse I told them I wanted to marry a doctor. When I graduated I went back into the Army where males were 30% of the workforce instead of 3% of the civilian nurses.
