Some tattoo shops want you to already have a feel of tattooing before they take you in. like one of them told me, ''I'd rather show you from F to Z rather than A to Z''. I think it might have to do with some artists that think tattooing is awesome until they feel defeated by the way skin is hard to handle at first and then they just give up on trying to be a tattoo artist.
I did an apprenticeship a couple years ago. Second shop i walked into, desperate to get going no matter what it took. Left a couple months later because dude was a racist and made me cry on several occasions (i have autism and severe anxiety i guess it just didnt mesh well with him). Ive been really wanting to try again but im an assistant manager right now and cant afford to take time off. Found your channel and youve been making me want to try again even if im self teaching but ive won awards with my art when i was younger and it genuinely feels like its the right fit for me. Guy totally made a bad impression on me though and ive been scared ever since to try again 😅
Great video! I've been on my apprenticeship hunt for about a month now- day 1 was me walking into as many shops in Manhattan with my art portfolio as possible. It was fun to see the environments and hand out business cards, but definitely not the most productive use of my time. I've since been reaching out to artists I admire through Instagram and it's been vastly more effective. It takes time, but it's worth it. I already have an offer to apprentice under an artist in Minneapolis, 10+ connections from artists making themselves available to answer any of my questions, and a meeting with a studio in Brooklyn on Tuesday. If it works out (and it sounds promising) it'll be my absolute dream, and a great start to the career. Good luck to everyone else in my position! Remember to have a portfolio online that's easy to access, and be willing to share and talk your best work in depth! 🤞🤞🤞
The concept, and me hearing about people actually paying money for an apprenticeship made me laugh and angry simultaneously. I did one through a friend of a friend way back, (ended badly and didn't help much) although drawing flash, doing their hand drawn stencils, autoclaving equipment, cleaning the stations and shop, all paid for the knowledge that was gained. Otherwise its like their just wanting some extra cash to have a janitor.
What are your go to fake skins, I've used alot out their, ive been using trueskin brand, and they seem to be the best I've come across so far! Any other recommendations on some fake skins?
