  • In this video, I take you on a journey to refurbish Buck the Animated Trophy, the singing deer head made by the same company, Gemmy Industries, that brought you Big Billy Bass. Buck was in need of some serious TLC, and I was up for the challenge. I completely took apart the mechanics and replaced a lot of the gears, and let me tell you, it was a lot of work. This was no easy feat, but the end result was worth it.
    Follow along as I guide you through the process of bringing Buck back to life. I show you all the steps I took, from disassembling the mechanism to reassembling it. I share all my tips and tricks for making the process smoother, so even if you're not a seasoned DIYer, you can still give your singing deer head a second chance.
    So sit back, relax, and get ready to see how I brought the magic back to Buck. Whether you have a vintage singing deer head of your own that needs some love, or you're just looking for some inspiration for your next DIY project, this video is for you.

    What an amazing repair, you can hardly tell it was even opened! I do feel your pain as I’ve worked on a few of these. The first repair I did was the side to side movement. That did take awhile, but was successful. The second one was in much worse condition. Everything was broken except the up and down movement. When I opened it up, I had to use a putty knife to scrape the skin off the plastic. I took parts from the up and down movement to fix the side to side, which that was fine with me. Unfortunately the ear movement seemed to have fried on the circuit, but I did get the mouth working. I sculpted a piece of wood to replace the mouthpiece because the original one was completely shattered. Now my first one I mentioned still has some issues, the side to side is getting very loud and the mouth needs a new gear. I definitely like some of the methods you’ve used here, so I may take them I’m consideration if I decide to give it another go. Here is a short clip of my repair: ua-cam.com/video/lqFfmzun5rQ/v-deo.html

    Wow! I feel lucky to find this video!! I found a Buck at a garage sale and got it for 10$! I found a wire to make it work at a thrift store for 25 cents and now that I got it working, it has this same problem. The ears are not moving and it doesn't turn its head left or right. I'm going to try to open it up later but it's good to have a video like this that would help guide me through it.

    Very lucky to find one with the latex still in such great condition. I had one I bought new when they came out and reluctantly got rid of it when the latex just crumbled years later. I wish I hadn't now, of course, those are going for crazy money now so I am probably not going to end up with another one. Awesome work as always.
    Edit: Oh, it looks like there may have been two versions. I didn't remember it coming with a remote or microphone when I had mine. Maybe they used something other than latex on the later model. That skin does definitely look thicker than mine did. Mine was almost paper thin latex.

    • @RandiRain
      @RandiRain  Рік тому +1

      Interesting. There may sure have been. There are different versions of the fish. I pretty sure it was silicone. I could always be wrong, but I've used enough silicone to be pretty sure.

      @scottmcdonnell7559 Рік тому

      @@RandiRain I am sure they got several complaints of the latex rotting within a year or two and changed it. There is also a possibility that other companies tried to copy it and mine was not a Gemmy. It looked identical to this and the same size, but it only had a motion sensor and a button. No remote or mic. I am pretty sure of that.

    You have my sympathy, that looked like a tough one. :) I've never understood one-way manufacturing but more and more things are like that now Ie. few good ways to take it apart again. Neat product though, not a lot of retail animatronics out there.
    See there is a good argument for brass gears strategically put in certain key spots of high torque like those small cracked ones you replaced, it's quite the elaborate machine to take apart for something so small. Sure you could call it a novelty item but not a cheap example heh.
