    For all consoles, Burned games don't do anything to the laser. It's that Burned Games won't be optimized like real discs, so the laser will have to move more to get the data than a real game, wearing it out faster.
    If you burn at high speed your laser will also have to read sectors of the disc multiple times to get the data because of errors, so always burn at a slow speed.

    I *highly* recommend if you want to play burned games, make sure they are done right and in the mil-cd format and not just burned but actually done correctly. Otherwise, your dreamcast is gonna make all sorts of noise jumping all over the place reading and sending your console to an early death. It takes a while, but it will happen.

    It's a bit of a myth that burning games can damage the dreamcast's laser.
    The death of people's dreamcast is usually down to the system being old more than anything else.

    I miss sega so much. I just ordered a bunch of Saturn Repros. I prefer to buy real but I can't justify spending more than 50 bucks for a game that was never more than 50 bucks. If Sega would re release these in original packaging and charged what they did in the day they could sell millions of copies and put Repro sellers and price gouge a holes out of business.

    Personally in a matter of maybe what ... 3-4 years max, i had 3 dreamcast burned off. Like litterally extinguishing. They would make a weird noise and suddenly no power anymore at all. At least 2 of them, think the other one its just the lense that didn't read anymore.
    I was playing day and night especially PSO but also i was using my DC for web browsing, and often it would freeze as i was going on the forums, the more the forums was huge with many messages, the fastest it would freeze. I think this is what fried my DC, combine with huge ammount of time playing.
    I also used the code breaker for PSO creating weapons etc, and i played some burned games at times (but not often)
    I don't think burned games where the biggest problem but the web browser... But yeah for having 3 dreamcast died in such a short span (only the xbox 360 beat this lol) i think it had to do with this. My last DC i decided to not go online with it (i had a PC at that point) and i avoided any burned games and it worked fine for a long while, up until i sold it a couple years ago. But you could argue i didn't played it as much by that time ...

      +Destro WOD thanks for watching and sharing your experience. I haven't personally had one die on me but I have owned two, and it was the first one I played a lot of burned games on. I sold it in like 2004 and was given the one I currently have by a friend a few years later, who did not play any burned games on it. For all I know I'm the only one who has used burned games on it but I would sooner assume more DCs out there have had burned games in them before by this point in time.

    Here's my anecdotal $0.02, I started playing a bunch of burned games on my DC recently (burned at slow speed) and the laser/GDROM was definitely working harder/louder than in the first half of this video, after about two weeks my GDROM took a shit. • @JediLennon
      @JediLennon  6 років тому +3

      rupert281 dude Sega used an extinct proprietary format called GD ROM. it's not as simple as them not having security codes haha. You can't just put a DC game in your PC and rip it. The rips you see on the internet were taken using an actual Dreamcast hooked up to a PC using special software, the broadband adapter and then creating a file from that data to use on a CD ROM. The Dreamcast flaw was that it was also compatible with a rarely used type of format called "mil-cd" which was mostly used in Japan for audio CDs with added content like karaoke. That format had no special protection, so that was the exploit that was used by the community to copy games. In the beginning Sega had something they thought was better than "security codes" a format no one else could use! Until someone found a way to crack it a few years later lol!! Cool story actually. Thanks for watching too

    • @duelingfattiesgaming2130

      @Jedi Lennon ! - That's what he means by security codes. With the new consoles the HDD and Firmware had to be unlocked using keys. It took years to get those keys for certain consoles like the 360/PS3. For instance the Xbox 1 hasn't been exploited yet to play burned/backups.

    • @JediLennon
      @JediLennon  6 років тому

      +Dueling Fatties yeah I know what he was saying but I don't think he understood that it was impossible to rip the games or create a GD ROM disc even if someone wanted to (Still no way to make a proper GD ROM disc today!). It's not true that there were "no security codes" because it was an entirely secure format that needed to be hacked and decoded at multiple steps. As for his dismissal of the question at hand because he had a DC for three years and it still works? Well that's something a person can take or leave as easily as my video lol. The idea is the system is behaving differently when it reads a burned disc in .cdi format than when it reads a real GD ROM. The data is being accessed differently and the laser even sounds different which I personally believe (although this video was not exactly scientific) supports the idea that there is extra wear and tear happening. Anyways of course take or leave my thoughts as well but thanks for checking the video out!

    I have a reproduction of Power Stone 2 that I bought on ebay, and the odd thing is, that sometimes when the console reads the disk, it sounds like the laser is scrolling back and forth waaaay more/faster than normal, and then other times it sounds like it's not working any harder than it does when I play an original copy of a game. So is there something wrong with my DC, or is it the disk? And if it's the disk, why does it only overwork the laser sometimes and not others?

      +UNKNOWNGAM3r well its a mil-cd format from what I understand. Basically a CD formatting that allows for additional data, so the difference is there is basically just game data alongside the audio. I haven't tried to use an audio cd to burn a game but these rip files you find on the internet are either GD ROM which is the original correct Dreamcast proprietary format (mostly used for side loading from SD card since it's not really possible to make a disc from them) or mil-cd which burns like a regular audio or DVD file that's why we are able to use PC hardware to do it.

    Listening to it won't really help you determine if your Laser is being worked any harder :) haha. The only real way to tell what the laser is doing is to hook up a oscilloscope to it and look at the levels as it reads a Pressed Disc compared to a Burned One.

    • @JediLennon
      @JediLennon  7 років тому

      +Dave's Game Room wow I thought it was all about the motor for the laser moving more often or drastically, which seems pretty easy to detect without any special equipment. Check out UA-camr GadgetUK164. He has done videos about the PlayStation, Saturn and GameCube and shows you on his oscilloscope what is happening when reading a Original Pressed Disc vs a Burned Disc. It is not so much mechanical wear that is the problem but more the additional voltage needed by the laser to read the Burned Disc (that's the theory anyway). Its lasers burning out which is the issue rather than a Motor issue. GD Rom's are NOTORIOUS to fail because of the laser itself.

    • @JediLennon

      John Smith Mine is the June 2000 I haven't tired yet but my girlfriend just did last week after she got a new power cord for her Dreamcast after it got chewed up. It's honestly simple and safisticsted. It has to be a MIL-CD and then it has to be before October 2000 and then there's this circle that has numbers, if it says 0 or 1 your Dreamcast can play burned games if it says 2 or higher it won't. I myself want to try but first I need to find some MIL-CD honestly. But I do want to trick out my Dreamcast cause I think it be pretty awesome.

      @twistedrules1 6 років тому

      John Smith I'm not sure I know the CD does have to be blank though so I guess a clean one will do. Like I said I haven't tried I do have a game waiting to be burned but I don't have a MIL that I've found yet that will help. I need to ask my gf that honestly I guess you couldn't really tell. I for 1 don't burn stuff I've honestly never tried until now. I know the Dreamcast is just a unique system.

    • @JediLennon
      @JediLennon  6 років тому +1

      +John Smith I think it likely does make some kind of difference (how much difference is the question I think) because the Dreamcast used a proprietary format (GDROM) on the discs which cannot be burned or reproduced by anyone any more. From what I have read and heard this format made the laser behave differently than a cd format and basically find what it needs off the disc more efficiently. If this is true than it stands to reason using the mil cd compatibility exploit to read a CD format disc as a game (tricking the system) would cause more wear than if it were reading a GDROM. I am no expert on any of this but with the info I have this is the guess I have arrived at. Thanks for watching btw always nice to see discussion :)

    your test can't be relevant. you play on a compilation burned CD. It's better for your lens to "push" data outside of the disk, then fill the blank to the center (or the contrary, i don't remember).

    • @JediLennon
      @JediLennon  6 років тому

      It's just one example. If you sit down with your DC for an hour or so and just try out some games both burned and GD ROM, I think you will notice it IS noisier when using burned discs. Some people say the noise isn't relevant. I'm definitely no expert but to me it seems logical that more noise coming from something mechanical could not be good and that's obviously what my whole hypothesis is based on. Of course do what you like with your DC brother thanks for watching.

    I’ve been playing burned games for some time now but when I put in an actual game it didn’t work it stayed on the Dreamcast screen.
    Is the laser dead?

    • @buzzkill1825
      @buzzkill1825 4 роки тому

      It’s probably dead or dying. I had a dreamcast that could play almost all of my games (burned and legit), except for a few. But if I kept my dreamcast on and let it warm up for about 45 minutes, it could eventually play all my games.

      Dj Exo send me a private message I’ll send you a few that work on mine. Make sure your DC has a small circle with either a 0 or 1 in it before you reach out. This will ensure that your machine can play them

      Sincerely i don't know if use burn games will break the laser
      Some poeple said,like adam koralik, that the burn games will break the laser,and other people said that the burn games will only stressed a little the laser
      Do you usually use the burn games?

    • @seganutt
      @seganutt 7 років тому

      Personally i would not use buried games on any off my retro CD based consoles dreamcast sega CD , especially the dreamcast the system was designed too use GD rom playing buried games makes the laser work a lot harder than normal because the data comprised from 1gb too 700mb makes the laser work a lot harder than normal there are videos on youtube that can explain it a lot better but i did play a lot off buried games on my dreamcast back from 1999 too 2002 without problems so i Can't say for sure if there safe or not but personally i wouldn't use them

    Oh dear. It sounds different when loading because it thinks it's a MIL CD not a GD-ROM. Your Dreamcast was designed to play MIL CD's so it is not doing anything it isn't designed to do. It won't hurt it.

    • @JediLennon
      @JediLennon  6 років тому

      +Spac8 It's meant to read mil CD for music tracks/ videos and karaoke songs where the laser simply goes to the track you select and reads tracks in sequence in real time. That is not anything like what happens when you use that compatibility to read a game with the laser jumping all over looking for different data constantly. It's using the mil CD compatibility for something it was not meant for. That's the whole point for concern it is NOT supposed to access GAME DATA via mil CD accessing game data makes the laser behave differently that it would simply playing music or video tracks working it much harder thusly wearing it out more quickly than a mil CD video or karaoke track or GD ROM which the system was designed to do.

      @@JediLennon You can play with your back ups, the DC will make the same noise for any game the mil CD is just the exploit to run the disc, after that the lens will behave exactly in the same way as it always does.
      Does not mater if is a back up or original copy.

    This does NOT prove anything!! Please do some homework first. And the Dreamcast did not have the capacity to read burned games at HIGHER Speeds. It was only a quad speed CD-rom anyways (4X) Even though it could read GD-roms and CDI discs. There is NO SUCH thing that a BURNED disc damaging the Dreamcast. The system itself made loud noises when accessing data on ANY GAME!!!

    • @JediLennon
      @JediLennon  6 років тому +1

      +Sean Bolland although I never claimed that this example is absolute proof of anything, I know burned discs are louder than the GD ROM disc. Doing homework and reading posts online is what lead to posing this question, which people are divided on. Despite many peoples claims about there being no difference without any more evidence than what I have presented, there is no denying that burned games make the disc access sounds much worse. Many of my discs were burned at 16x. Explain why the disc access sound is worse using burned games would be great. If the sound is worse I assume it can't be good. But since you know more than me as you say maybe you can explain why that is. Thanks for watching

      se que eres de habla hispana o conoces algo de español, los juegos extraídos de un GD-Rom pesan lo mismo 1.1GB, los juegos al extraerlos de manera pura tienen 4 archivos, uno de texto de 256kb, un archivo de audio que pesa 4MB, una pista .GDI que valida el disco como original ya que contiene su ID y Track2 que son los datos del juego que pesa el gigabyte, los juegos así vienen en formato .GDI y necesitas este conjunto completo para jugarlo en emulador, es imposible quemar un .GDI, ahora, existe otro formato llamado .CDI que pesa máximo 800mb que es una versión comprimida del juego en un solo paquete, estos formatos tienen un archivo .Selfboot para autoarranque y la peculiaridad de este formato es que tiene la misma tabla de contenido recreada eliminando las cosas que no se necesitan, como la pista de advertencia, fotos del juego para la pc, etc...
      como puede entrar un archivo de 800mb en un disco de 700? fácil la velocidad de escritura y la modificación del espacio de las hendiduras del CD en el mismo espacio hacen esto posible, los huecos que crea el láser los hace más pegaditos, menos separados, de hecho un .CDI que pese 1.1GB podrían en teoría entrar en un disco de 700mb
