It's not that Shreya is not attractive enough to be in the movie. It's just that she's a singer, not an actress. So the singers stick to what they do and the actresses stick to what they do.

@@shrox she was offered movies.. by directors long ago... But no movies has happened obviously because she refused it... She did have a cameo appearance in a Bollywood movie song sequence which she herself sung for the film tho... I forgot the name of the movie and song but try searching Shreya Ghoshal cameo in Bollywood movie or something...plus she has done several ads in other states.

8:10 - they are called "Playback Singers" which is common practice in south asian music scene. Best lyricists/poets writes the lyrics, great composers would make the music for the lyrics, and the composers pick the right singer for the song depending on the range of vocal tone/music, mood, actors/actresses they are playback singing for. In most cases, these combos produce great music

In bollywood there are multiple actors who are very good singers and want to sing for their own movies too along with their already amazing talent in dancing and acting. But in India every field is dominated by people who are the absolute best in it. So only the best singers sing, the best actors act etc... Actors are not allowed to sing soo many times even if they want to

Many actors do one off songs ..From Amitabh Bachchan/DrRajkumar/Dhanush/ Geeta Bali...etc...and some do covers Parineeti Chopra/Alia Bhat etc ...but their forte is acting so they are know as actors ..
You are wrong about best in the business, most celebrated stars are not great actors. Other than that all others are too notch.
Look, Shreya could step on stage of any major opera house and sing the most demanding roles. She could walk into the Village Vanguard and crush any jazz standard, doing stuff that that no one has heard before. It’s not just her command of her instrument, it’s her command of time itself, and her ability to absorb new musical ideas immediately and completely. Every time she opens her mouth she can make history, and it’s a good thing that us westerners are waking up to what is possible for her.
Honestly, playback singers like Shreya are not the best singers in India. Playback singers are more popular because they sing popular movie songs. Singers like Shreya are trained in classical music. But professional classical vocalists are at a much higher level than playback singers. Michael Jackson was more popular than Luciano Pavarotti, but who was the better singer?

Trust me, when there is a Shreya Ghoshal's song in an Indian movie (Not just Bollywood!), audience see Shreya not the actor! Yes, Shreya was offered great roles from top level productions, but she rejected it and concentrated on singing.
yes when she goes high, that's her mixed voice rather than head voice.. when she sings low that's hwr chest voice but with same sweetness and lightness which is amazing for an artist

Playback singers have been a thing for decades in the Indian industry. People who act- act and who sing- sing, who can do both they do both. It depends on what the film makers agree with.
Just to let you three know, her companion judges are well recognized music composer/ singers themselves. But Shreya is in a completely different league....I can listen to her endlessly.
For mostly financial/legal reasons, artists in Western Music Industries write, compose and sing the songs themselves to avoid confusion of who owns a song or gets the royalty etc. In South Asian Music realm, most songs are featured in some movie or other. Here, some professional lyricist writes the song as per the situation in the movie, a good music director is hired to compose the song and the music director hires the singers to give voice to the song as per the situation, mood and match with actors.

Bari Piya Shreya's first song ever from the Movie Devdas has a very interesting story. She was 16 when she got offered to sing for the movie Devdas. The director when wanting to record the song Bari Piya knew Shreya would be very nervous as she was completely new to playback singing. He lied to her saying they will first rehearse the song. When he was actually secretly recording the song when she finished. The director told her the song was recorded and was perfect. So the song in the movie is a one take song.
The song is definitely worth checking out to get an idea of how much Shreya has grown and how her voice has become even more beautiful with age.

Every song this woman's voice touches turns to pure gold. These are not even my favorite songs from her, but she still sounds amazing. It's absolutely ethereal! If ya all were to understand the lyrics you will surely fall in love with these songs(1st song is a sad song , and second song is a lover appreciating her love and how she compares her lover to almighty). These are beautiful lyrics and well sung by her and the music composer also have a very important part in this. These songs are very specifically made for the story of the movie . Obviously you can't bring in any playback singer for some songs , not everything is gonna be good for Shreya Ghoshal voice for the movie atleast (i don't mean she can't sing anything she is a pro singer and can sing songs of variety), ;but themes can vary(sad, happy excited or in pain), but she is the best out there currently . Now that brings to the next question , why is this differently done when in west solo artist write and sing and even compose their own music, so the answer to that is , it's done by many artists and singer too(solo albums, but the takers for them are low) . solo artist and band unlike west doesn't get that reach over audience/listeners here in the similar fashion as a song made for movie does.if the movie is good song automatically plays a important role in the theme of the movie and if it's good it stays with you forever, ya sometimes movies might be bad as hell but songs can be really good , thanks to song writer and music composer.. ya do wanna add here that movies original scores are released later and they were used to be sold as cassette CD's back in that era now it's more like digital online world we are at you will find everything online... but nice that you guys liked her. She is beautiful and sings in multiple languages and singer's they usually don't go for acting here u til unless you really are that good and can act as well as you sing.. They have influence and they can easily get into movies but they really don't becoz singing get's them enough recognition and they are living their dreams to be best singer's of the country and they do shows(tour's)all around the world with the songs they have sung for various movies.. India dispora is huge worldwide. They do get lot of crowd in these events. And that's how these playback singers earn their livelihood . Do check out Arjit Singh . He is also a goosebumps giving singer .
One point i forgot to mention is these singer's they do sing in Hindi or other Indian languages which is followed by lesser population. While English song are followed worldwide so that can also be a factor here.meanwhile armaan malik is our singer who also sings English songs you can check him out too.

In India the music industry goes hand in hand with the movie industry, as Indian movie have lot of original songs in them, playback singers sing while actors act, movies have albums and sound tracks, there are some actors that can sing very will but they generally don't sing their own songs and leave that to the Playback singers, that keeps everyone in buisness, singers have shows and concrete there they sing the songs they sang for movies, Indian playback singers have huge fan following and sometimes a movies draw can just be it's music and their favourite singers. And that why music of the movies are realeased before the movie realeass
