I test drove this car today and Richard's review is spot on. A really enjoyable drive. You do have to use the gears but If you get the gears and the clutch right it didn't feel flat at all. I didn't need to over rev the engine, and yes I am buying one, confirmed the order, with the Toyota dealer today.
I have the CVT. It's great - super smooth, and easy to dose the revs. So long as you don't drive aggressively, it's lovely. I've road-tripped mine a lot. From Northern Poland to Italy and back a couple of times, through the Alps; around Croatia, and also to the South West of Germany. It's very planted at speed, and effortless with the motorway assistance systems. Would be nice if road noise were a little lower at 125-130 km/h, but not too instrusive, and good for a tiny car. Main problem is lack of steering reach adjustment! At a solid 125 km/h - including over the Alps - I get 4.9 l per 100 kms without AC, and about 5.1 with.
The one and only reason this car has a 1 litre engine is because of fuel economy the fact it doesn’t do 0 - 60 in 4 seconds is obvious there’s two much emphasis on top speed and acceleration driving on uk roads is top speed of 70 mph if it didn’t do that it would be a problem but it does. Very good in depth review Richard I’m definitely in the market for one of these thanks for sharing 👍
Probably the best review of a car I have ever seen! The car itself is one of the best looking cars you can buy at any price, shame the dash (speedo/rev counter are not better designed) and the engine is not a bit more powerful, but apart from that its a great looking car.
When I was first considering this car, alot of other reviewers put me off, with the main focus being on the 1.0 litre engine and rear space, no mention on things like the excellent safety kit that comes as standard. I actually did think I wish there was review from Richard on this one, and now here we are 😊. Very informative as always thank you!
The problem with many reviewers is they don't focus on the purpose of the car if it doesn't fit their purpose. Namely it's launch time against a Lambo, flashiness or expense. The previous Aygo feels like cheap rubbish compared to the Aygo X. I can tell because I have driven both. You really notice that the Aygo X basically is a shortened Yaris. Was an interesting review particularly as I'm a previous Aygo owner. I bought an Aygo Blue 5dr back in 2008 which I used for driving tuition. There have obviously been considerable improvements made since then, you mentioned the quietness at 70mph, my car had high levels of road noise and driving at 50mph on the motorway for an hour used to give me a headache. As to reliability I was unfortunate enough to have the water pump seize which took the drive belt with it when the car had only done 8k miles, managed to get it to the dealer just as the overheating warning light came on. Dealer said it would take 3 days to get the part, highly inconvenient as I had a pupil taking their test the following day, after some pleading they said they would remove the water pump from another Aygo they had in the showroom 😅 Have to admit I didn't have much faith in the car after that. It's still weird to me. They made the Aygo to be this tiny wee thing, this small city car. But then they made it bigger and off-roadier? SUVier? But its the Aygo? The smallest Toyota??? Bizarre. I'm sure someone likes it, though.
The original Aygo was just a rebranded Citroën C1. But Citroën discontinued the C1 so Toyota had to make a new car using the same platform that they use for other cars (Yaris, Aqua, etc.)
I guess it's supposed to combine the advantages of an SUV (high driving position, good ground clearance) with the compactness of a city car. I personally like it.
Not enough demand for Aygo-sized cars among new-car buyers. Prices for new cars are going up (whether due to safety and emissions regulations or just inflation) and the sort of buyer who would buy the old Aygo is likely going for used cars. But demand for higher-riding hatchbacks (crossovers) is strong and so car makers are tapping into that market instead as people are willing to pay more there. I also suspect the Aygo was built taller this generation to prepare for an EV version as the floor would need to be higher to accommodate the battery. But that’s just me speculating.
I think it’s strange that they’ve omitted the central climate vents. I know they’ve always had those pop out rear windows but it feels cheap when the i10 has normal windows in the back and a full set of climate vents lol
We thought about this car then discovered the engineers were on a tea break when the rear door access was designed. Unless you are a contortionist and can slip into a letterbox opening easily, forget trying to get the mother-in-law, child seat and even a very small dog into the back. Why don’t Toyota design rear doors that open wider?
It's staggering that a car that tiny has 18 inch wheels. The things, it needs them, because anything smaller and they will look lost. Breathtaking when you consider how tiny the car is.
I think a good comparison video could be between one of these new vs a same priced used car from 2020. I’m wondering why you’d buy one of these new over something more plush, just a few years older.
This will be my first car and I've put a deposit down for a second hand CVT (auto) Pure trim at around £14k, the reason is the insurance :) I could get an older Yaris for that price but costs twice as much to insure. I test drove an older Aygo and didn't like the way auto worked in that one. Dealer tried to sell me PCP which had a lower interest rate for a new Aygo X than a used one, so if I had chose PCP I would have gone with brand new as over the term it was the same as a 2 year old car anyway.
I wish toyota sold thier economy cars in the U.S. I would love to have a Yaris or Aygo. RN we only have the Corolla, but we get different versions than other countries, they almost never have the L trim, and the LE trim cost 24k
Excellent I would say access to the back is limited. But good Economy for a regular petrol engine. Interesting the Auto is CVT….i think prev auto versions of the early models were MultiMode - automated manual and with only 1 automated clutch, and not very reliable. Wheel adjusters for seats are way better than levers imo. One of the few things I hate about my Honda is the lever adjustment for back support. It’s rubbish, and will prob break in the future.
Took our CHR for it's service at Toyota got one of these as a courtesy car, quite surprised how good they are, there isn't anything l can say l dislike.
Great comprehensive review. The 3-cylinders, lack of proper rear windows and odd exterior styling puts me off. I think the Hyundai i10 has it beat on all these points. Gotta hand it to Toyota for the economy and 10-year warranty though.
It's a massive downgrade on the previous Aygo that came before it which was quicker, more fuel efficent and more comfortable to drive. The raised ride height and the silly tall narrow wheels make the car want to roll over for which Toyota compensated by fitting a stiffer suspension so you get a rough ride and poor handling at the same time. The tall narrow wheels have a weird tyre size so they have to be ordered in no same day fitting and they are £150 a prop on what's meant to be a simple economy car. The only advantage this car has is a much better turning circle thanks to the tall wheels. It's still a mechanically sound car and relatively efficent but I see no reason why if you have a MK2 Toyota Aygo you would drop it for this car.
I can't find any reason for anyone to buy this car over a Picanto X-Line for basically the same money. Even the basic Picanto seems better, to be honest.
The car is aimed at retirees for the odd jaunt to the garden centre/supermarket....I have not seen anyone driving it under 70 years old. With that in mind I have some advice for Toyota....drop the silly leccy driver `aides`; Cruise control, hill assist, sign recog, steer assist, auto lights etc....then make the base model £13,900....then you will sell 35% more units.
@@pocketman5510 Well you could look at the new Renault 5e priced at close to £28K and not as originally spec'd at less than £25K but an ideal small car.

Hey Richard. Would you recommend it (manual) for a new driving instructor? I've always used the Yaris but the price is getting silly.
Excellent review, thank you.
Did you get a chance to try out the cvt version ?
Great review ! Could you do a 1l Honda Civic?
If I get the opportunity I will. Although I didn't known they did a 1 litre civic.
Great review,a real one thanks
17:55 wow not far off double the normal cost for city car tyres! So much for cheap running costs. I guess it will cheap on fuel though and maintenance
I think it’s strange that they’ve omitted the central climate vents. I know they’ve always had those pop out rear windows but it feels cheap when the i10 has normal windows in the back and a full set of climate vents lol
It does have a central vent, it’s on the top of the dashboard and points towards you
We thought about this car then discovered the engineers were on a tea break when the rear door access was designed. Unless you are a contortionist and can slip into a letterbox opening easily, forget trying to get the mother-in-law, child seat and even a very small dog into the back. Why don’t Toyota design rear doors that open wider?
Fanders this is excellent!!!
i think you should review the new qashqai
I will if I get the opportunity.
The review is brilliant though 🙏
Excellent review 👍 good car but that tyre size and price is ridiculous.
It's staggering that a car that tiny has 18 inch wheels.
The things, it needs them, because anything smaller and they will look lost.
Breathtaking when you consider how tiny the car is.
I like my little Aygo 2015 but next time I will go for something bigger, I feel to uneasy close to larger car. Specifically buses and trucks
I think a good comparison video could be between one of these new vs a same priced used car from 2020. I’m wondering why you’d buy one of these new over something more plush, just a few years older.
The same could be said for any new car vs a used car. It depends how much the buyer values being the first owner.
I just bought this car and I was struggling to drive it, the biting point is so high😂
Yeah it is on the old Aygo.
I struggle to set off on flat in my wife's and it's almost impossible for me to do a hill start 😀
Great review :)
what about car tax? is it 0 like the regular aygo?
I wish toyota sold thier economy cars in the U.S. I would love to have a Yaris or Aygo. RN we only have the Corolla, but we get different versions than other countries, they almost never have the L trim, and the LE trim cost 24k
Is it the same 1kr-fe as the original aygo?
I think it is but I'm not sure.
Same engine as the 2018 Aygo, yes. 72hp 95Nm.
Yes. It's actually a Daihatsu designed engine and pretty bombproof if you maintain it.
Currently got one of these as a courtesy car and absolutely despise it
Excellent
I would say access to the back is limited.
This seems like it's begging to be an affordable much quicker little electric
The Idea of the all Glass hatchback (glass rear door) is that it's lighter and uses less fuel but obviously cheaper to build aswell.😢
What's wrong with 3 cylinders? Explain please? I'll bet you can't 😂
The back doors not opening wide and no rolling down window turns me off this car .
hurray
I finally got the first place. well let me now enjoy the moment while it lasts
😂
I was really waiting for this review. Do you think this is a great first car for someone purchasing their first car?
No, buy an older used car. In my opinion, a new car is not worth the risk of being damaged (more likely as a new driver).
You have to decide that, I recommend trying as many as you can before deciding.
In my country you can get brand new yaris cross EVEN cheaper 😂
Yea price should be lower like under $19k
This would be the city car to have if the Kia 100hp 1.0 T-GDI engine did not exist
I dont know why but this car looks kinda "huh" . Nice reviews bruh.
I timed that 0-60mph at 13 secs....
EN français s v p 1:46
The back windows make me sad 😅
What's the point revving the engine it's just burning fuel the whole point of the car to save fuel ?
I can't find any reason for anyone to buy this car over a Picanto X-Line for basically the same money. Even the basic Picanto seems better, to be honest.
Shame on people that drive anything bigger than this for commuting….fine car!
That's good advice for Toyota ( and probably a few other car makers ) unfortunately I don't think they will listen.
Waste of money buying the likes of this when there are better small cars out there.
Like what
@@pocketman5510 Well you could look at the new Renault 5e priced at close to £28K and not as originally spec'd at less than £25K but an ideal small car.
6.5L/100km is the fuel economy conversion.
Dissapointed tbh.
£18-£21k for basically a face lift with the same old 72ps engine. Surely this is only aimed at the clinically insane?
Suzuki Ignis beats this hands down
What is it with the British that love to speed down very narrow bendy country roads. Roads in Europe are much better. They are long straight, WIDE boulevards. Britain taken note!😢
