Damn I feel Thomas completely misunderstands Steph’s game. Steph has always said it’s Nash and Reggie who he combined. On ball he’s a super charged Nash, when he gives up the ball he turns into a super charged Reggie Miller

At least Isiah corrected himself at the end. There is no traditional point guard aside from CP3 now. Draymond is definitely not a point guard. Draymond is fighting 7 foot dudes every night. Steph can be whatever he needs to be. He can hold the ball and dribble through 4 defenders and create his own shot. Isiah is describing Klay when he tries to describe Steph.

Even if Steph didn't have the most assists per game on the team for a given year, it's pretty obvious that he is CREATING THE MOST SHOTS for his teammates every game, and it's not even close. He doesn't need the assist to be the reason a teammate got and made a shot. And just to further call out the ridiculousness of this argument: almost every year when Steph didn't average more assists per game than Dray, they were like 1 assist apart or less. Come on. Steph is a point guard. Some major mental gymnastics going on here.

Surprised that Isaiah doesn’t really understand how Steph plays or his impact. Steph doesn’t just run off screens. Why do they constantly put ou false narratives of Steph. Isaiah is lying. Draymond does not have more assists than Steph Curry. Steph is the Point Guard, and he runs the offense. He is just able to do it with or without the ball in his hands, and no other player in history has done or has been able to do what he does. I don't care how much they try and diminish Steph's Greatness with false narratives he is the best I've ever seen play the game. He changed the game of basketball and is definitely the best at the game he changed, and that is the obvious truth, but these fools depend on other fools to believe the nonsense they spew. Since 2015-16 (73-9 and bust season), Draymond has lead in assists per a game in all but the year Steph was injured and played 5 games. This year CP leads in assists per game, Draymond is second and Step 3rd, with Podziemski 4th. The position terms and the system the Warriors and several other teams run are not really in sync anymore with the old definitions. Traditional rolls are jumbled to look for an advantage.
The main idea behind the system Kerr is using is that initiating offense can happen from anywhere. In general Green ends up in than role more often than Steph when in the half court. The advantage has lessened as the league has adapted with longer "position-less" athletic wing players who grew up watching this system win over the past decade. Which is why one key to their chances this year is having a CP3 and others who can handle initiating offense - and why Klay has struggled to fit. If you watch, who is calling the set when bringing the ball up to half court, it is now a number of players including Draymond, Steph, CP, Kuminga, Podzeimski, rarely Moody and Quionnes. After initiation, a couple of those guys in any group on the floor have the green light to reset if/when the ball gets back to them. Its a counter to the improved defense against what they run and if there are less than two guys in that role on the floor in a group, it tends to be stagnant and struggle to find shots. Kuminga is still learning it and tends to just go iso when the ball hits him. But when Draymond and CP were both out, it killed their ability to run offense in more than one unit.
Steph does play point guard at times. His greatness is really a function of his range and accuracy. He is a decent point guard in the traditional passing and setting up offense sense, but not the best ever at that. Not a big deal in a league where most actions are just a set up for an open look at three or a screen action, which is why Steph leads in scoring for the team. Traditional point guards rarely were scoring leaders. But traditional point guard calling their own number too often was considered a bad thing. Career total assist for Kidd - 12K, Nash - 10K, CP 11K, Magic 10K. Steph wont get likely make top 15 all time in total assists, night just miss top 20. Doesn't mean he is not top 10 all time NBA for the combination of skills. Bron isn't a PG but has 10K assists too, another great skill mix guy.

‘To obsess over Curry’s three-point artistry is to miss all the other skills that make him one of the greatest players of his generation-and arguably of all time. It’s his sublime ball handling, his ability to weave in and out of traffic; his soft finishes at the rim, with either hand; his midrange marksmanship, his balletic assortment of floaters, scoops and step-throughs; his passing and playmaking and court vision; his rebounding (especially for his size); his stout screen-setting (ditto); his knack for drawing double teams, then solving them with a quick pass or shot.’ {source: ‘Wilt. Respectfully, even though Oscar and Magic are legendary shot creators, Steph creates the most shots for all of his teammates. His relentless off-ball movement and passing ability means that there isn't a single moment where his teammates can't get a shot. Zeke got it right If you saying point guard in the traditional sense it starts with Magic then it's the Big O then everybody else A true point guard crosses midcourt with the intention of putting his players in position to score not jacking up threes The game is just different today and Steph is very good at what he does but not in terms of what a true point guard does on the court

This is why the idea that a great player would make a great coach is not a thing. Coaching, playing are different skills. Same as playing and analyzing. Just because you can play a game extremely well doesn't mean you can analyze the game at the same level. 2 different skill sets. People give too much credit to "professionals'" opinions/analysis about their profession, whether it be sports, medicine, whatever. That's not even considering the inherent biases "professionals" develop along the way.

My issue with those who think passer = point guard is how you define GUARD, FORWARD, AND CENTER...
We should all be able to agree Jokic, Draymond, Lebron, Sabonis, Ben Simmons, Wilt (1 season he averaged most assists in NBA) aren't GUARDS.
This is why point forward and point center were invented.
You can call it passing forward, passing center, and passing guard as well.
The thing is, players who play the 1 today aka PG are in essence the primary guard or the primary scorer/ball handler. But this does overlap with SG (shooting guard or scoring guard). Like Kobe and MJ were the primary option too. In reality today you have 2 guards 2 forwards and 1 center. Your exact position is determined in part by who you guard due to your size but also if you score from inside or outside and if you are the primary scoring option off the dribble.
Today it doesn't matter whose passing... you want 2 guards who can shoot and score, you want atleast 1 of 2 forwards to be able to space as well but they still play more so inside and guard bigs while getting more rebounds. Lastly your center still needs to score in the paint and ideally defend well while spacing is an added bonus.
No one has ever agreed with me yet but I maintain that magic today is a POINT/PASSING FORWARD like Lebron because the man can't shoot or defend guards... he defends forwards better than guards so the hell you going to call him a PG for if the man is more like a forward than a guard... Magic would be better paired with most of today's Point guards than forwards because like Lebron, he would excel with spacing. Curry, Lillard, Kyrie alongside a Klay or Booker would pair amazingly sith Magic at the 4. Give him an Embiid and PG or Michael Porter Jr. to not say the obvious KD... great team... with good chemistry.
So my answer for greatest PG is Curry because you can't have a better all-time starting 5 back court than Curry+MJ. Since MJ is the 2, obviously Curry is the 1.
My passer is Lebron because > Magic. No Magic because Magic + Lebron + MJ = tragic spacing. Even if you put Lebron at the 1 instead of Magic to add Duncan your spacing is still terrible. I would accept you consider Lebron - MJ - Kawhi - KD + Center.
I rather Curry's gravity on and off-ball with his sheer range, volume, and efficiency while shooting. Let's not forget his handles which are all-time great as well as being a very capable passer even though it's low volume more often than not. Lebron can do that.
    So
    Curry - MJ - KD - Lebron - Shaq
Thus Curry is my PG and greatest PG of all time by today's NBA standards which exceed prior eras in terms of scoring and skill set. Obviously I build my judgment on the rules of the game TODAY...

Isiah was a great player and probably is under appreciated but he is always in his feelings about something. I get so tired of this pure point guard bs. You think Steph couldn’t lead this team in points and assists if the offense were set up that way? I can assure you he could but it wouldn’t have played to the strengths of his teammates or the success of the team as a whole to the same degree. Point, 2, combo who gives a damn. I have seen both play in their prime and Steph was/is better “point” blank.

PointGuard position is different from a Shooting Guard position! Steph is not a PG but more of a SG so I agree with Isiah. Most people these days doesn't understand that bcoz his position iin GSW is PG and greatness but if you technically define what is the real role of a PG, Steph role doesnt fall in that description! His role is more of a SG and not as PG!

Zeke's logic is flawed as hell. If we're basing the definition of a point guard off what he's saying, then Jokic and LeBron (hell, even Giannis, to a certain extent) should be labeled point guards! But they're not. Jokic is a center, and LeBron is a small forward.

It is gut-wrenching for me when two of my heroes from when I was growing up, are at odds. I wore 11 in early middle school, then switched to 23 in 8th grade. Are they still my heroes? ABSOLUTELY! My Isiah story was told to me by Calbert Cheaney. He said they were lifting heavy over the summer. In walks Isiah, loads the squat rack all the way up and busted out a set of deep squats. Everyone's jaws dropped because nobody else could get that amount of weight off the rack.
I can't stand it when we do all the comparisons. How do you determine who the best is? You just can't. But in doing so, to make a point, we talk bad about someone else. Do you know how reckless, insensitive and ignorant it is to call an NBA player trash? Even more so a hall of famer. Now what I will say in relation to Magic and Isiah, they used to get that All Star game pumping! The aptitude that it takes to fly up and down the court and deliver perfect passes that whiz past defenders' ears is unreal. Unreal and un-matched. Isiah retired in 1994. Guys that talk about subjects like best point guard were little kids, in diapers or not even born, yet they talk as if they are authorities on the subject. I saw a post today that said Magic couldn't play in today's league. That is what is going on in this space. Pure foolishness. I think what is missed about Isiah and his era is that brain power that was put into trying to figure out HOW to win. Everyone is so good goo ga ga about the Mamba mentality. Isiah and Bird and Julius and Magic were on that when Kobe was in diapers. Isiah's era said "I want to beat you". Where Kobe to the current says "I'm better than you". The difference in those approaches, well if you don't get it, no point in trying to explain. There is an issue with the logic. Steph is the greatest point guard but Dame Dolla says he's better than Steph. We got a problem just right there. What people also get twisted is the assumption that guys like Isiah couldn't score like they can today. The game simply was not played like that. It just wasn't. Isiah would cook like Bennihanas today. Zeke will tell you who holds the 3 point record for the NBA Finals. I just go by "who you like". Everything else is lip service. And a lot of it is stupid lip service. Word to the wise, most every young guy getting busy today, has an old head guiding them or that coached them or taught them the game, so what are we talking about anyway?
My biggest takeaway is Isiah talking about the institutional knowledge and staying like a regular human. Guys gotta pay attention. Look which guys get maligned. Great thinkers, courageous men, innovators. I'm talking the Isiahs, the Westbrooks and the Carmelos and those like them. Interesting...
The next two games will determine if the Dubs are serious about making a run. They can climb the standings if they do the right things. Won't say what those things are because their Mavs and Lakers are watching. If the 6'4" rookie wants it the most, it will be a tough week. The Dubs can win both games without Steph, if the best players play like the best players. That is what it comes down to. Klay is one of the top 5 shooters of all time, Draymond is the greatest defender, CP is an all time great point guard, Wigs is one of the all time great athletes and collectively the most competitive concentration of players in the league. Gonna tell it or show it? Or is the slow Euro dude and the senior citizen just too OMG good?OMG they're soooo skilled. Two approaches. When KD signed with the Dubs, the WHOLE league started crying about how it wasn't fair...instead of getting in the damn gym and doing something about it. Well, not CP. Then tonight, I'm watching Minnesota down 22, and And Edwards said to hell with this and started cracking heads. Kind of how I feel about the Dubs in the next 2. Are Luka and LeBron just OMG Hall of fame and better than Mike, or are they going to live up to the hype, the rings, the IQ and go in like Antman? Or is Kyrie just too skilled and OMG best handle ever and if he was 6'5" OMG. No disrespect to Kyrie the Don. But what will it be? Go Dubs!
