I just cant get enough of this album. I think i'm burning holes into my hard drive and phone playing it over and over. The whole damn album (and it's big) is just so infectious. I've been listening to jazz and progressive rock my whole life. NOTHING can touch this album. It has opened a whole new world of incredibly talented musicians for me to follow and enjoy. I cant even begin to explain how groundbreaking/landmark this album has been for me, and i'm 45 and i've been a music junky since I was 3. This album is just amazing!

@cemegonuts This is one of the best albums, I've EVER HEARD. But Kamasi's 2018 release "Heaven & Earth" is just as good, might be better!!

the cool thing is that kamasi wrote the choral and orchestral parts after recording the songs, and he did one hell of a job. He said in an interview that adding choral and orchestral parts to his music was an idea that someone gave him and that he decided to experiment with on this album and I'm so glad he did it gives the song such a dark feel.

Wow...I came here to find The Magnificent 7 theme, and I find this ... MASTERPIECE.
Wow! This track is perfect. The drumming is mind blowing, the saxophone work is some of the best I've ever heard. The piano solos and parts are just as mind blowing as the sax playing, and the gorgeous bass and that change up in the final minutes just seals it up amazingly. I mean, damn! This is literally one of the greatest things ive ever bloody heard!

Even though this song is 12 minutes, it flew by so fast! The sax and piano solos might just be the best solos I’ve heard in Jazz... like ever.

no, he's not. there have been a lot of jazz artists like him throughout the years. he's helping to popularize it, but you're giving him too much credit. i mean don't get me wrong, this is pretty much my favourite album of the year, and it's filled with innovative ideas, but the dude is not jazz's saving grace in the modern age.
also that still doesn't validate 'changing the history of jazz.' the future, maybe (but even then that's a ridiculous statement), but you can't change history.

that is a stupidly circular argument. history is always ongoing, yes. can you change what happened an hour ago, or a year ago? no, ergo, history cannot be changed. done. please no linear arguments. the guy made a mistake and that's that. now on the topic of jazz, there have been plenty of artists (and kamasi isn't like, world famous you know. it's not like you see this album everywhere in pop culture). you're completely forgetting matana roberts, and niechec - even portico and submotion orchestra, granted they're not rooted in jazz the same way this is, they still are fusion (which this is too). this is not revolutionary. it's simply an amazing jazz album that borrows heavily from the past to yield a new aesthetic meaning.
+Matt ...I think you know he meant changing history's trajectory...I think the average person knows changing history itself is impossible. He simply mean changing history's path or simply making new history. And of course you wont see this i pop culture...jazz isn't really as popular anymore but for a jazz album to garner this much attention is impeccable. Haven't heard a jazz album this talked about and critically acclaimed by critics in a while. Whether you think he is doing anything or not I feel he will slowly bring more popularity back to jazz as an artform thus making modern jazz history

It's all about the resistance. Those who are oppressed keep fighting for god will soon bring justice to those of the wicked and sick minded.
Why are there no mainstream artists that use irregular time signatures? I reckon they are a way of achieving super bad ass grooves yet pieces written even in the easy ones like 7 and 5 are few and far between. Listen to the drums and bass on this, the feel is unreal. It's not like weird chord structures, this stuff is super pleasing to the ear.
Actually this piece is crazy genius though. Maybe they just aren't good enough to write music like this even with a pop or hip hop feel. There are a few underground artists that do it but no one super famous has written in these time signatures since like Dave Brubeck.
+dahalofreeek It's not that they're not good enough, many great musicians work in the mainstream industry. My guess is that if you create something with the purpose to sell it as much as possible, you want to be able to connect with as much people as possible, so you shape your creation avoiding everything that could be incoprehensible to anybody, such as uncharacteristic chord variations and progressions or time signatures. This is actually quite hard to achieve and has incredible power because when you do that you're creating something that everybody can relate to. The equally powerful downside is that you are creating limits for yourself in the only place where there are none which is the immagination. I hope i wrote something helpful I apoligize for my not so fresh english.

+dahalofreeek Radiohead and Sufjan Stevens are two that come to mind! And Snarky Puppy is becoming more mainstream. Prolly Bjork too... but it's been a while since I've listened to her stuff.

Kind of a late reply, but the band stereolab lives almost exclusively in irregular time signatures.
+dahalofreeek there are some. NIN, Tool. Dream Theater. often, progressive bands like Jethro Tull and Genesis. King Crimson wasn't popular when they were active, but have since seen universal acclaim for "Red" and "In the Court of the Crimson King". that, I think, speaks volumes about retrospect and accessibility

Do you know what? This kind's of reminds me a song that Kamasi Washington hasn't heard in no way but it is very likely that both of them come from the same 70s prog-jazz-rock and it is Triana's "Del Crepúsculo Lento Nacerá El Rocío". Weird enough this has a flamenco vibe to me and that has something to do also
