How about elect government officials that will actually send criminals to prison, instead of setting them free because they claim to be an oppressed minority or underprivileged !
It can be very useful in deterring people from committing crimes, but when they say they are there to protect the students and in the same breath announce to all criminals that they are unarmed, don’t carry pepper spray or batons…it’s just stupid. As a former guard I feel like it puts them in danger. The thought of not knowing what they have is more of a deterrent. Now we all know they can’t do nothing but call the police like the rest of us. They need armed guards now. Smdh 🙄
Tell your students not to roam any street after 11pm. Its simply not required. Universities should take security more seriously. I always wondered they can just build a wall and a gate and restrict people coming in.
The problem are the larger universities. Cal has about 30k students enrolled. That’s a lot of patrolling and the campus includes many acres all the way up to the hillside. Again, that’s a lot of ground to cover. There are actual public roads that bisect part of the campus. It isn’t self contained. Even if you switch to using electronic badges and create multiple walls and gates to accommodate the different sections of campus owned land, you’re still going to encounter lots of issues. It makes sense in smaller schools. I used to live near Pratt in Brooklyn, an art school. They had one main campus and then one smaller offshoot building nearby. The main campus has a gate all around the city block that it takes up. At night, only one gate is open for entry and has staff patrolling the gate. I went to UC Berkeley (aka Cal), that campus is just too massive. They also own a lot of separate buildings dotted along the perimeter on private land, separate from the main campus. It certainly isn’t impossible to build walls and gates but it would require a lot of effort to manage the swells of people entering campus during peak hours. I think universities like Harvard or Princeton are better setup to have walls and gates because they are primarily self contained campuses, not a sprawling park. UCB is a sprawling park with a creek and Forrest running through it plus it goes all the way up the mountain.
Umm this is a free country you can’t tell those adults they can’t go around wherever whenever also those campuses are public spaces here goes a better suggestion maybe refund the police and actually lock up offenders
I think the demographic of students at Berkeley are just getting softer. The strong tough radical days of hardcore activists cloth is no more. I’ve grew up and been around that campus all my life and the challenges are no different then they use to be and just think back when it wasn’t any good surveillance. I’m wondering what exactly are the safety concerns get to the specifics, what shady looking characters? It’s Berkeley if you knew what era I came from this is almost laughable I mean it is, it use to be like a badge of honor to say you graduated from Cal, if part of the element. It’s a shame that some of these kids today never been out of the house and now you got parents getting involved. What happened to the world. College is your right of passage, your out experiencing life your parents shouldn’t have to helicopter you through college, what is he doing there. 😂
Nobody should have to fear having their laptop taken in broad daylight from café across the street from campus, nobody should fear being mugged at gunpoint just a block from school, nobody’s car should be broken into just because they parked for 5 minutes from the school.. The issue is parenting getting involved hiring useless security guards isn’t going to change anything, it’s politicians in the Bay Area enacting soft on crime policies that need to be changed
All I can say, what a waste , yeah it may bring comfort because it looks good, but to announce that these guards do not have any weapons to defend themselves or the kids puts their lives in jeopardy If there’s an active shooter, they come across for that matter just put a cut out of a police officer with a camera, same effect they notify the police. I guess they can walk you to the car. At least have the schools have ballistic shields. Stay safe y’all 🙏
Stop voting Democrap, and you will have less crime. My kid graduated from UC Berkeley years ago, and it was a dicey environment back then. Cut the hefty paychecks of UC administrators and professors and use the money towards real security for its students.

The UC Police Dept if one of a few police depts with statewide jurisdiction. A real government police force with arresting powers. What happened? I think the CSUPD and the CHP are the only others that have statewide jurisdiction.
Maybe parents should teach their kids that they should learn how to not to be a target and to defend themselves instead of relying on someone else to do it?
the parents could have used that money to address the root cause of crime, which is colonialism and white supremacy, but they wasting money on stupid stuff like this.
It's all about the 'Helicopter Parents' wanting to follow their children to school. If you taught your children well when they were very young and as they grew through the years, these parents would realize it was time to let go of their 'children'. Can you imagine these parents as grandparents still refusing to let go? Ask any teacher and they will have much to say about how Helicopter parents are doing their kids a HUGE disservice.

Guns are scary and bad! Now we just need to convince the criminals to think like us.
@@cynthiaprice3528 I would carry if I were a security guard; just don't tell.
This is a start, and when the security team alerts campus police, it will be very effective.
It's called being proactive.
@@violent_bebop9687haha😂
Do all the things to increase crime and then spend more money to hire private security to protect themselves from crime.
It's called a "win-win" situation.
Exactly, what can the ‘Safe Bears’ do when students get mugged? Advise students to surrender whatever the muggers want?
Liberals come back to roost.
No homeless people around the campus!!!! please!!!!
Private schools and Universities , Malls, and most Buildings here in Philippines have security guards.
They should be fully armed and equipped with bodycams
So sad. With all the money UC Berkeley has. It goes to show greed greed greed...
Where is Berkeley? Looks like a good place to live. Very safe.

Similar to USC's program of security ambassadors
Thanks for doing that 👍

Nice, mall cops whose job is to call the real police.
Must be nice to sit around if they want, they could sit at home and still collect a check. Sign me up.

What are they gonna do with no weapons? Also, why are the parents paying for this and not the school?
“Defund the police!”👮♂️ “Hire Teddy Bears!” 🧸

that's a joke, right?

You are misinformed. All California police officers have statewide jurisdiction. Whether city, county, or state.
May be allow students to exercise their 2nd amendment rights, so they can protect themselves against criminals!
