Great product. I have one and use it when I'm loading something new or a trailer I'm not used to pulling. I used it MANY times pulling horses in a bumper pull to make sure I was spot on.
I have the 3" shank with 6" drop and feel I should have gone with the 8" drop.
Overall great hitch. Glad you are reviewing one 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Why do you feel you should have gone with the 8"?
Rick Gonzalez mainly because though there is a drop of 6” some of that is taken up with the ball position making it approximately a 3-4” drop. If I went with the 8” I would have had a solid 6” drop even with countering for the ball.
BiGnEvS if you are poor, you can screw a $20 pressure gauge into your harbor freight bottle jack and divide by the rod cross section.. I hate those crank jacks!
I always look forward to your updates. I don't think that I have ever not learned something new. Thank you for this...interesting hitch and swell travel trailer!!
I love that trailor layout with the bunks at the front with private door
Perfect timing for this video. I've been looking around for quality hitches like this.
Another great video glad you took your time and showed the hitch in use.
Great timing. I was just looking at Weigh Safe hitches yesterday.
Phenomenal hitch, I just changed out my fixed hitch for an adjustable one for a travel trailer we plan on pulling soon, and now I'm seeing this video.
Now that hitch is excellent
Another great video. Thanks
Great review, thanks!
That is quite a hitch. Never seen one before. Thanks for the video.
Liked the video. Nice hitch with a scale and the RV is nice as well.
Thats a wonderful trailer, nice sale.
I love the scenic drive.
Goodwill every where. Lol
You are getting very good at doing things with one hand. Keep up the great videos.
That whole thing looks like it was CNC machined from billet aluminum and polished, definitely the best looking hitch I've seen.
Sometimes folks you do get what you pay for and want the convenience of having to only buy something once.
Great information,good job!
Neat hitch!
You are the best. Thank you. As a new person in the market to start the RV life, your videos are very informative. From New York.
Probably one of the better videos about towing out there. Thanks.
Love the program, ty
Just ordered one. Thx
Would be nice if 5er hitch makers could start putting scales on their 5er hitches. I'd pay for that upgrade in a heartbeat!
raybbj: Completely agree!
maybe instead of using a nylon lube plate you can slip a bathroom scale in there instead ;)
raybbj
you can do that upgrade easy yourself. if you buy an air gauge, can get an in dash model or a Mount in a box model, you can plumb it in your air bag set up if you have them. then scale it on a certified scale so you know what limits are on the gauge.
Great video excited to see what it to come in the future ur reviews are very cool an helpful
Thats a great idea
Great product for dump trailers.
I have to try that hitch!
Oh wow 27k I don't think that's bad at all for that. hmm thought trailers were more than that. shows how much I've looked lol.
BUILT DIESEL MAFIA Depends what you look for. Start at 23k and go up on bumper pulls that size.
BUILT DIESEL MAFIA Yeah that was a pretty gnarly discount off MSRP. Makes me wonder what the catch is.
Fake MSRP maybe? Poor build quality? I dunno. But a 13k discount without even asking? Seems sketchy.
Nice piece of Art , and it does work .
I enjoy your videos keep up the great work you do👍👍👍👍
Great video, I’m definitely buying one of those hitch receivers.
Great looking product. I had previously considered one, but realized there is no accommodation for load levelers or weight distribution bars that my current hitch offers. Plus they really improve the ride quality over bumps and dips (weight distribution bars). Actually I would like to have seen the tung weight with and without weight distribution bars to prove how effective the bars are on reducing tung weight and distributing the tung weight between truck and RV.
Nice!
Good review. I have the 2.5 inch 8" drop version of this hitch for my 2017 F350 platinum diesel short box SRW and an very happy with it. I originally bought the 3" version and was surprised to learn that my f350 came with only the 2.5" yet I have the Trailer tow package and the 11,500 lb upgrade. I've read its because ford went down to the 2.5" on "job 2" versions of the short box version F350. So my 2.5" weigh safe is only rated at 15,000 lbs. yet would have been 21,000 lbs. if it was the 3" version. I'm sad.
Hitch works great, and I love knowing my tongue weight.
Barry Ho: wow I didn't know that Ford reduced the hitch size on job 2 SRW trucks.
Big Truck Big RV... Yes, from what I read over the weekend. I'm going to check with my dealer. It is an odd and disappointing decision, particularly since it is below the vehicles overall rating. The 3" weigh safe as you know is much higher rates for weight 20-21k I think, whereas the 2.5" is only 15k.
I had to take back the 3" weigh safe. :(
I'll confirm things and complain a bit with my dealer and see what I can discover and report back.
On a side note, I'm pulling a covered car hauler cargo trailer trailer with a friends car from North of Fargo ND to Phoenix AZ then a few other items to LA. Total weight of 8,000 lbs in a 10,000 lbs GVW trailer - so the f350 should handle the trip easily. Just had my first oil change and DEF topped up and a thorough check over at the dealer. All ready to go. Not using an anti sway hitch as I tested pulling the trailer and car the other day. Pulls very straight even in pretty good wind. It's a 24' tandem radius nose 7' tall trailer. Brakes adjusted and tires very good, all lights working. Heading out myself and taking a week to do the trip. ;)
Nice review
I have the 2.5" shank & the 2"shank versions with the hitch locks and the build quality is worth the money esp with the pins like no other.. serously I've never had a nicer set of hitch's
Great video on this hitch. My two choices are the one you reviewed and the GEN Y 3" torsion hitch. If possible please do a review of the geny hitch...
I agree this hitch is a great product, very well made. Knowing the tongue weight of your trailer is critical. Subscribed!
Could you do an episode on park model RV? Differences, etc.
beautiful truck
Congrats on 50k subs!
TShull: thanks brother!
Love you r channel dude keep it up
Well, now I got shank envy. Mine is only 2.5". Ugghhhh
That IS a great layout, though. I'm not keen on the two door floorplans, I feel they sacrifice usable area for the door, but this IS nice.
Wow Big truck rv i never knew you lived in corpus christi, i noticed this rv shop and the goodwill. Small world!
I have this exact trailer, the sway is nuts going down the road. I was hoping you'd match the hitch with trailer sway control bars
I currently am using a weight distribution and anti sway bar. I have wanting get a hitch like this, but I don’t see how to attach a weight distribution. Any suggestions??
I to have the same question. I would spend the extra money to have know with sway and gauge.
This is a novelty hitch in my opinion. An actual weight distribution hitch is going to be much safer for long hauls. The hitch he's showing is meant for standard daily use, not for pulling campers around the country. That's what anti sway hitches are for.
his F450 is designed to not need the anti sway setup guys
Right now, our adjustable ball mounts are not compatible with any weight distribution systems.
fantastic video, Big Truck Big RV! You have raised the consciousness of RV and truck owners and purchasers across a wealth of topics and especially safety. You are hands down the best teacher I have (never actually seen) heard in this area.
Do you have a single video that is a step by step on considerations in regards to describing a towing system and protocols for receiver, hitch, tongue weight, to lift kit or not to lift kit your vehicle, weight ratings, trailer lights, trailer breaks and issues to pay attention to including things never to do.How to safely match everything up... a flow diagram (visual)? Like BTBRV Flow (visual) Towing Checklist, do's and dont's? If you were to create that and work out any flow diagram hiccups from your test group (us) you could easily sell a laminated set of reminder little posters for the rv or cards for the truck. Every video I have seen has information on each of these topics in detail but I was wondering if you have a flow visual or series type linked modules. I will go to see if you have playlists because I forgot to look...
I have seen training how to's and honestly they arent as good as your organized instruction and teachings.
I didnt know this hitch was available to help with knowing tongue weight. Is there a way to test this to see if the scale on the hitch is accurate / calibrated??
Thank you so much for your channel.
Nice review of the hitch. I had no idea you could buy a hitch with a built-in scale - that's really useful! That's also a really nice trailer! And, at an attractive price. It's a bit too much for my 150 to pull, though.
wow what a dream of a trailer...
Hello from Ontario
That Puma trailer's nicer than some houses I've lived in! lol
Great hitch... I have one. Works great for normal loads. However I would recommend something different for towing heavy loads if you don't have a DRW... Like a weight distribution / sway control hitch. I have a F250 and pull a 270RKS (10,000# loaded/ 32ft overall / 1300# tongue) and you can definitely feel winds and semis creeping up along side you without a WD sway control hitch.
I have one of those for my 1500 Ram and I love it. The 2 hitch balls and the scale really come in handy. I almost said "the 2 balls come in handy". LOL. I've never had to tow really heavy with it. The heaviest is a car. I'm interested in how it works out for you with a heavy trailer. When I upgrade to my 2500 I plan on getting a new, bigger Weigh Safe hitch.
I contacted Weigh-Safe Hitch last year. They were working on a weight distribution hitch assembly. Did they say when this would be available? I tow a travel trailer with a 2015 Ford F250 Super Crew Short Bed Diesel.
Our weight distribution should be available pretty soon here!
I've always been told 10-15% tongue weight. I have a Sherline trailer tongue scale, and I go right in the middle at 12.5% total trailer weight.
Looks like you switched out your tires. What size and brand are they?
I have the older version, same billet aluminum but with no scale. It a great hitch. 8" is the way to go it you are going to be pulling any small utility trailers with the truck. (2500 RAM CRD 4wd)
Nice hitch but the RV is insane! Reminds me of the trailer Lucy & Ricky had in the Long Honeymoon. More like a mobile home - lol.
Hopefully this helps someone looking at a camper model in this weigh class.
I have this exact Puma trailer, 32FBIS. Along with this exact hitch shown. My hitch showed this weight when I bought the camper. After batteries, propane, and loading the camper up: my hitch weight is right at 1,550 pounds according to the scale. Actual total trailer weight is 10,400 pounds according to a CAT scale.
I would always advise someone to calculate 15% of the GVRW (bumper pull) for a real world hitch weight and compare that to your payload AND hitch rated capacity sticker that’s mounted under the receiver bar. The dry tongue weights on the brochures the salesperson gives you is absolute minimum.
I like that video
First impression looking at the thumbnail photo, at what point does an RV become big enough to be called a mobile home and still be towed safely?
I bought the 3 inch receiver with an 8 inch drop for my 2017 F-350. I bought it in May, and it did not come with the hitch pin (bummer, as one for a 3 inch receiver was/are hard to find). While it has worked fine so far, I've seen several complaints about the barrel lock and pins quickly fouling due to dust and corrosion, even when the protective shroud is in place. I also question if transient overloads caused by bumps and abrupt stops jarring the truck and trailer will fatigue the scale.
1570lbs seemed like low capacity for a 36ft trailer. At first it threw me off but then i remembered that you could load another 1200 or so. Does the trailer mfg give a max tounge weight? I know with a fifth wheel they will put a 20k gvwr with 2 8k axles, but Seems like they dont consider tounge weight on these tag trailers in the posted gvwr- I've been wrong before, but as I understand these things, it doesnt make alot of sense! Would probably make a nice informative video, unless i just havent found it yet.
Great videos. I'm trying to find an old truck that can pull a 10,000 lbs. boat. I still have to find a trailer for it as well. I'm guessing the trailer will have to weigh 2 or 3 thousand lbs. as well. I've been looking around, but can't seem to figure out if I can get away with an f 250, chevy 2500, or if I will need an f 350, or f 450, chevy 3500 etc.
Do you have any videos that might go into any details on how to calculate these weights or what type of truck is needed to do this?
any 2500 series truck will do it.. my 98 SLT GMC SERRIA 2500 with a wee 305 in it pulls just about anything.
I would really like to see an independent, random off-the-shelf, side by side comparison with this hitch and a accurate electronic car scale (the kind NASCAR uses), the hitch is only as good (or safe) as it's accuracy, otherwise it's just a high priced aluminum hitch.
I knew this was Texas when I seen how the businesses we're all lined up along the interstate. I thought that was an interesting set up when I was in Houston.
You made a nice video
Looking at that hitch how would I install a sway product with it? I have the blue ox prosway now. Thanks for your help
Really cool idea, I like the price for the safety it offers, but still prefer a steel hitch...
We are working on releasing a steel version!
Great video, tanks so much!
Would the weight registered on your Weigh Safe change with a weight distribution hitch? Might be a cool video. Thanks!
Wowza that's a lot of tongue-weight!!! Over here (UK, but Europe in general) most of our caravans are between 2,600lb and 4,000lb. 5,000lb can be found but rare. Generally cars here have nose-weight capacity of 165-225lb and some 4x4s are rated for 350ish. Many people here use bathroom scales to check the weight before they hitch up.
We don't get fullsize pick-ups over here unless we import them privately from the US, so I can't think of anything on the general market over here that could tow that gigantic trailer apart from a lorry... legally due to the weight, and structurally due to the noseweight.
donkmeister come visit America. My wife lived in the U.K. For a few years and I was fascinated with the lack of big pickup trucks. You wouldn't believe the size of stuff here in the USA.
Would you still not want some form of anti sway?
Ive heard about this hitch for a while and didnt realize until just now that theyre local to me. 30 minutes or so away from where I currently live
Check out Fastway Flash ball mounts as well. Build in Provo, UT
Feel free to come stop by our warehouse and check it out!
Locking hitch pins freeze up and won’t unlock through the winter here in Ohio.
Makes swapping hitches even bigger of a pain.
South Texas weather does have benefits.
do they make this with an optional sway control? Because i have a triple axle 15000 lb travel trailer.
LOL , the intro.
Go with the pasta rocket.
Still cheaper in the long run than being married , Ha, Ha !!
Anyone who will have there truck/trailer subject to road salt will want to use Super Lube grease in the lock as well as the receiver. I don't have enough uses for a tube grease needle applications. Warm it up put it into a vet syringe with the larger needle and put as much as you can into the lock. So far it has worked very well on the canopy locks. They say it is good for saltwater marine applications and impervious to road salt. With more uses as well.
The bad thing about those hitch locks is that they can be popped with a long pry bar. I know because I had to have one removed. I was a long way from home and thought it had to be cut off to remove it. I went to a hitch place, told them what I needed and they came out with the pry bar and popped it off. I was amazed how easy it came off.
I like it. I also like the tight fit into the receiver. The price is reasonable (I checked on Amazon). No option I guess for a weight distribution system.....but you have a dually, so..........
6:20 is that some awesome looking new tires I see???
Hmm, I have seen then and was told they where good. Anyone owned one for a while and have updates on it? Does the meter still work? I want to get one as I am eanting to get into transporting crv's
If you need a weight distribution hitch, what good is this for a one time use?
Will this work on my Prius?
yes, this hitch will pull your prius just fine
Black70Fastback ^^^ got eeemmm! 😂
I'l make a deal, buy me a Prius and I'll test it and report back. :)
A '90 Civic can pull a CRV
The Calico Cruisers Why would you do that to yourself?
I have a question and hope you can help. Looking for a new towing truck for and I will eventually be towing a full sleeper 3 horse trailer varying in weights of 11,000-14,000 pds when loaded or unloaded. Do you recommend looking at a newer 2017 f350 single rear wheel or a few years older dually staying within my budget? I'm not looking to upgrade again for a long time after purchasing the new truck. Hope you can help and thanks in advance!
What do you do for a living to own a truck like that?
Luis Vazquez: Engineer and a few other things.
As some others have said, many trailers and weights need weight distribution hitch systems and this does not allow for that kind of connection.
When this place offers up a WD style hitch system/attachment/add-on or however you want to describe it I will buy one!
I have the exact same truck and I have a trailer that is rather heavy rated at 6000 lb dry weight but it's a toy hauler and is about 17.5 fully loaded. But the question I have is would this be and okay hitch versus a weight distributing hitch since I see nothing in the 3-inch line for the F350 currently?
Damn. The 350 looks nice
I'd be interested to see if the tongue weight changes with weight distribution
Hey boss, just wanted to know if you used some other methods to verify accreditation of weight measurements on it
Chevy needs to build a truck comparable to the new super duty
A weight distribution hitch is usually not mandatory if the trailer is lighter or smaller than the tow vehicle itself.
So you're going to run this setup without a weight distribution system or without trailer anti-away bars?
That's an awesome hitch. Wish I knew about when I had my travel trailer. I always worried about my tongue weight. Is that the RV dealer near the Colonial Del Rey rv park? We have stayed there before.
Wonder Whats Next: sure is
Your truck is squating with that little trailer.
Devo Dar: No sir. The camera at a few angles makes it look that way. But if you look at he trim paint compared to the tire, you'll see it's still higher in the back..... plus, that's not a little trailer... so clearly your having vision issues.
Good video. Question is though if your pulling that big of TT wouldn't you want a WD hitch with anti sway bars?
I wonder how accurate that scale would be after towing a bouncing trailer for awhile?
And the hitch is made in the USA 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I love the idea of this, but I don't see an option for load leveling and sway control :(
why 10% ? that seems more like minimum to me. I would think with a long bed dually like that it could handle more like 15-20%. is the logic lack of front weight on steer tires?
Mitch and Cassie Shepherd . Yes
And that much trailer back there will surely steer for you eventually
Mitch and Cassie Shepherd Bumper pulls usually put 10-13% total weight on te hitch. Goosnecks and 5th wheels average 15-25% onto the tow vehicle. Just the way they have been designed on all trailers.
+Mitch It is. If you want more you can go up to what your vehicle can handle, but keep in mind, what you can put on your hitch is actually less than the payload capacity of your vehicle, even when empty.
l337pwnage that is a good point
