Just a heads up: I would use canned air in the future when cleaning a PC. It is pretty common for moisture to accumulate in air compressors. Great videos. Thank you for uploading these!
If the purpose of the tower is to run virtual machines look up Proxmox. Its built on top of Debian and has the ability to run Containers (LXC) it utilizes QEMU so that is solid. Plus its free.
Hi! I will look into Proxmox, thank you for you suggestion. This project is more about configuring a simple environment so I can start implementing the network security aspects on top of the small environment I configure here... so that's why I went with a simple Ubuntu / VMware workstation configuration.
hi Grant, thanks for the great video. It is helping me to learn how to set up lab your way. I had a question, to set up the main PC can I setup Ubuntu in my desktop and use it? Or Do I have to keep the main PC seperate?
All good options! There's so many ways you could go about doing this! For me it's a matter of configuring a simple environment and then adding the network security layers on top, since I am more interested on the security side of things than the sysadmin type stuff. Lot's of options.
@@collinsinfosec Sorry I meant could build them locally via VMwarr ESXI server. Then using web GUI locally install vms and use workstation pro to remotely connect via a existing system. Sorry can't type for ish 😁
Hi Grant, I love your video and I follow you for all your video but I have a question. Why did you decide to use Ubuntu as a base system and not other OS such as VM-ware ESXI or Proxmox or other?
Great question! At first I thought using Ubuntu as a base system would offer me some more experience using linux and then I could work with VMware Workstation on top of that to fast track my homelab setup because I care more about the network security components over the actual infrastructure, since this is such a small scale homelab. But now that I have looked into Proxmox, I think I am going to back track and use this instead since I can then manage all my VMs through the web client - appears to be robust and simple (let's hope 🤞) So changes to come already :)
@@collinsinfosecExcellent, I'm glad to have been useful, in the future I will try Proxmox too, it seems to be a really good Hypervisor, at the moment the Lab is on Vmware ESXI. Keep it up, I love your videos
I hope you will find and notice this. I am currently in the point that i really want to learn cybersecurity but ovrr the past 3 years i've been currently focussing in programming and now i want to learn networking but did not know what/where to start and what to read. (free pdf or ebooks maybe) . Hope you give me some tips.
Hi Grant, Thank you for the video. I'm setting up a HomeLab on VirtualBox environment trying follow your HomeLab settings. I installed the OPENSSH-SERVER on Ubuntu yet the windows 10 PuTTY cannot ssh the Ubuntu IP address. Error message "Connection timed out" I tried to ping it and error message "Request timed out" How do I resolve this issue? Thanks in advance.
If you are on the same network, you can simply SSH into the server or use a VNC client to interact with the UI. If you are outside of your network, you will need to set up port forwarding on your home router and then you can conduct the same processes as before!
@@collinsinfosec just a thought, and I know this thread is a couple of months old... But I would think a better solution (or a more secure one) is to use a VPN solution to tunnel into your home network. Be sure to use certificate based authentication instead of of password based authentication. Definitely more work and will be more overhead on a shared server.
The thought process behind this was because VMware is used on the corporate / enterprise level, so why not get experience interacting and using a VMware product, even if it's workstation. VBox is also a great hypervisor, I like to is it to manage my local VMs on my machine.
Personal preferences! My question is why does it matter which distribution you use? Sure there are some which offer better uses than others, but at the end of the day, does it matter which distribution you use if it's a personal preference and you are proficient using it? Just a question, not trying to attack this comment.
I watched your other videos and I think you are giving wrong informations to everyone about cybersecurity. Stop talking about it if you don't know it 100%. You are the reason that people don't want to learn about cybersecurity anymore.... unsubscribe.
You’re seriously an impressive student. You’re motivating me to put in that extra effort so I appreciate what you’re doing!
This brings back memories on when I I first started my cybersecurity home lab.
what do you have in it now?

Great videos. Thank you for uploading these!
I love this series 🙌🏽 Ubuntu is my go to. I’m using it for a file server with ldap right now.
It’s this kind of content I’ve been waiting for
Thank you so much for this Grant! Will follow up and record my process as well.
Awesome videos, can’t wait for the whole series!

VERY impressive Grant! Nice hardware.
You cuddle your PC like I cuddle my dog what a mood
I like your lab design, very well planned out. Quick note, you actually dont need putty anymore on windows. It comes with openssh now in the terminal.
Thanks for the heads up Kevin!
Oh I had the same monitor you've used when you changed the HDD!
Great video I want to follow your process a+, net+, going for more just need the projects in my experience
It great bro
Awesome video... but you could have just used WSL.. , ssh may be an option.
Great video but when it comes to VM's SSD or NVME I only use SATA drives as secondary data disk.

You cloud then build it from the web GUI then use VMware pro to connect and use them after build. Just a thought!

Why not ssd storage or 2?
Nice ❤️
Oh grant you could install ESXI VMware then use VMware workstation pro to connect to remote server, that's what I do. Its free!
