Lata Mangeshkar singing in 29 Languages

- India suffered the loss of its Nightingale voiced maiden - Shrimati Lata Mangeshkar today.
The woman has practically dominated the Hindi film industry for 6 straight decades starting from the 50s up to the early 2000s, and continued to sing up to 2019.
Having said that, she has not just sung in Hindi in her illustrious career, she has sung in nearly all major languages of not just India but the Indian subcontinent itself. The claimed number is 36, but I could personally only find songs or performances in 29 of them, which I thereby compiled in this small video of about 10 minutes. Its nothing but a drop in the ocean that her entire repertoire of songs can be considered but, it was worth it.
So here is Lata Ji, singing 29 languages, encompassing 7 language families (mostly Indo Aryan though)

Yahi to Avataar hota hay ! She is Avataar of Sharada maata ! She wears white always since beginning, carries very simple personality, baby like sweet and humble smile 🏵️, a voice that can calm lakhs of people in one go just like a goddess, sang thousands of song no one in world has sung so many in life time, sang for more than 75 years again nobody sang for such long duration ,,, do we need more proofs that she was more than human , a avataar of Saraswati maata... Or god gifted by Maa herself...
And She left us on day of Saraswati visarjan..

Probably the only Indian singer who has sang in these mny languages... And some people say that she is overrated and she ate the careers of many female singers, esp the South Indian singers. Those singers never got out of their comfort zone to be honest. And one hand Lata, being a Maharashtrian, not only sang in Indian languages but also in Malay and Sinhala and Nepali. There's a reason she is Bharatratna!

Wonderful to hear her sing English. It was reported here in The Netherlands that she sang in Dutch when she performed in The Netherlands. The said it was a song Mijn Lieve Holland. Would love the hear it. If anyone can find it....
That is something I never heard before! I really hope that clip is found someday, it would be REALLY amazing to hear her sing in Dutch! I don't recall any other mainstream Indian playback singer (even today) who has sung in Dutch so, she'd really be a first.

I still can't believe she's gone. India lost a really great singer. I remember listening to her 90s-2000s Bollywood songs. I had no idea she could sing in Indonesian, Japanese, and Swahili.

She said that she has sung Russian on stage but it wasn't recorded. She also said someone had sent her a tape of her singing in Malay. She couldn't even recall singing in Malay!
Yes, I had seen the BBC interview as well where she said she had sung in Russian. It is a pity there's no recording of it available today, because it would have indeed been precious.
Malay and Indonesian are actually mutually intelligible languages (like Hindi and Urdu) so maybe the tape she was talking about was one of her Indonesian songs only. But if it is a different song, I hope it gets found someday and we can hear her in that language as well! :)

it is amazing how despite being an Indian and not knowing Nepali at all she beautifully carried the emotions of that song.

@@dubbingduniya442 Bengali one language.. No Sadhu and Chalti... So you can delete any one : vande mataram / aaj kaal aami. Include the song from Amar Bhupali (1952) .. Lata Manna duet .. Which was in Brajabhasa.
Bekas pe karam not Urdu.. So many Gazal sung by Didi of poet Galib.

You missed out there is a beautiful and famous Tamil Song sang by Lata Amma and the Song is "Valaiyosai"
I didn't miss it out, I purposefully didn't put popular songs in most languages because they are the ones to first catch a copyright which could put the video at risk. So I used less popular songs in most languages. ;)
But indeed Valaiyosai is a beautiful composition, perhaps Balu Ji and Lata Ji are singing it together in heaven now.

As a native Sinhalese, I can say that her pronounciation in Sinhala language is extraordinary. Some other Indian singers also sang several Sinhalese songs. Even though they sang extremely well, no one achieved the level of Lata Jee.
Actually her Sinhalese song is a very difficult tune composed by Ananda Samarakoon ( interludes and Arrangements by S. Dakshinamurthy)

From different states including east and south as well , but can’t find such voice quality 😊😊

It's actually a Hindi song but with Japanese words and phrases included in between. The name of the song is "Mera Watan Japan" from the film "Aman".

@@dubbingduniya442 she has herself said that in a felicitation by Goan people that her mother is Marathi that's why she and her siblings speak Marathi and not konkani which was her father's mother tongue, it is claimed that she was a Gujarati because Dhule from where her mother belonged was initially in Gujarat, before Maharastra liberation movement. Now Dhule is a part of Maharashtra. There is also a documentary by sahyadri named mazya ajolchi gani which she had done with her brother, in which she is been saying that her maternal grandmother taught her songs in Ahirani language which is native to Dhule and Jalgaon( parts of Maharashtra), and Ahirani is a dialect of Marathi language. What else people need to know before claiming her a half Gujarati. Her mother's surname was Lad which is a surname ti many marathis you'll never find any Gujarati with surname Lad. If her mother was a Gujarati, she would have obviously spoke Gujarati in day to day life and not Marathi. Also her lifestyle, festivities would have been Gujarati.

okay, I honestly didn't have any idea about the history of Dhule region. Thank you for giving insight on that.
Actually there are a lot of articles (even by national newspapers like Times of India) where they mentioned that Lata Ji's mother was a Gujarati, some people (including myself) mistakenly assume that Lata Ji was bi-ethnolinguistic (Marathi-Gujarati) because of this.
But okay, we all learn something new everyday.
Regardless of this, we salute to this Marathi songstress and consider her a truly Indian superstar.
