His family doesn't seem all that supportive in trying to actually help him. He's a night owl, so he could get a job working at night at walmart or something, looks like he needs motivation to do things not ridicule
and it's not like the pandemic is not a real thing. It is harder to find a job now. There are people hiring, but not everywhere is even open, so you have to look where they are hiring!
if he's waking up at noonish then i think he should get a second shift job, so he still has part of his regular gaming hours with his buddies after he gets off work.
Yea it’s easy to get a night shift at any postal company usual pay above minimum wage and he’ll still have chances to move to other business operations in time with a degree of course
I agree with him being taught that the world will not be as kind to him as his family, but not by humiliation. Those of us with mental illness, I'm assuming he's dealing with depression, may harm or even kill ourselves because of such treatment. I hope he gets the testing, diagnosis, and counseling he may need. There are a lot of mentally ill men in the USA and they are not getting the help they need to function because of the stigma that they are weak if they seek help. I grew up with a mentally ill father and am disgusted that he did not get the help he needed.
It’s so expensive! And there’s a learning curve like with anything. Only this learning curve can cost you very much needed money and sanity. 🎶I wish that I knew what I know now when I was younger 🎶 🤦🏻♀️
Right now I'm 21 and live in an apartment with my boyfriend, but we both have jobs that we got lucky to get above minimum wage , but we still have to watch our accounts a lot and make enough to throw into savings for a house because things are expensive.
Kinda difficult to live on your own, when you earn less money than your rent costs. Sure, you can try to get a second or third job, but what is life even worth living for, when all your time is used for work just to survive?
Parents: never teach their kids to cook, clean, do laundry, properly care for themselves or do anything productive Also parents: why do they only sit around on their phone playing games
As one of those kids, the lack of chores makes chores as an adult feel horrible. My bestie had chores she enjoys cleaning. It makes a huge difference in how we handle the stress of daily chores.
I really feel bad for the guy, he seemed really depressed but he can't expressed it that's why he acted that way as a defense mechanism. And I can relate to him in so many levels even at 27... But Dr. Phil isn't really helping. He's just shaming the guy.
Not only that, but their expectations for him are so ridiculously out of touch lol imagine thinking that a young adult can just go get a job and be financially self-sufficient anymore
I was so genuinely frustrated at this episode dude clearly needs some type of motivation, not to be yelled at by a dude who cons the term doctor and yet can’t seems to understand there might be mental illness involved in a lifestyle like this
@@splashlyy Yeah hearing people confess they once went a week without showering is sometimes weird to me but I’m like I’m just gonna pretend I’m shocked by that haha
I feel like even if he said "I don't like gardening", "I'm having a hard time finding a job" or "I'm depressed" they still would've considered them excuses and dump on him
I wanna bet he's mentioned being depressed/needing therapy at least once to a family member and got the same kind of attack on his character as he got on this show
It wouldn't surprise me, but he may also have gone straight from the "actively seeking help" stage to the "everything is fucked" stage because of how incredibly unsupportive his family is.
I hate it when someone asks you for a reason and then labels that reason "just an excuse" ... Sometimes a reason is just that. "The reason he doesn't drive is fear." There's a valid reason for the fear even. Therapy might help, berating and humiliating him DEFINITELY won't. Maybe, help get him into therapy so he can figure out what is blocking his motivation, instead of building more walls for him.
It sucks because it's true. I'm autistic, sensitive to sounds, I have anxiety attacks when in new or fast-paced environments, and I suffer from depression and isolate myself a lot. People have told me to "just cover your ears" like it will solve my sensitive hearing or to "toughen up" because of my anxiety. My family calls me ungrateful for not wanting to spend time with them when I just want to be alone. I have been able to make a career out of digital art but sometimes I still feel like I'm not contributing when my reasons are labeled as excuses or when people say that art is not a job. I'm still living with my parent and only bring in $400 a month on art. I have not been successful yet in getting disability checks or stimulus even though I have the documents on my autism and the proof that I make way below a living wage. Even if I tried to go back and work at Walmart, it wouldn't pay enough for me to live comfortably. I was only there for 5 months, and I finally quit after the manager kept talking behind my back about me using autism as an excuse for my anxiety. I only stayed as long as I did because my family pressured me to stay, and I didn't want to make them unhappy.
@@kononoism all im going to say is; if you can pull out a family album and see a childs skin go pale and dark circles around their eyes before they hit 10 years old; the depression isn't their fault
Dr Phil: "You're 22... why aren't you a contributing member of society?" That was really harsh... Also they're acting like just getting a minimum wage job will solve all of his problems and he'll be able to move out when the reality is even with a job self-sufficiency is extremely hard to achieve
It must be fantastic to Dr. Phil and the guy's not-so supportive family too. It must be fantastic to truly believe rent for any apartment in America is at best thirty dollars or less a month. Food and drink costs nickels at the absolute most expensive foods and drinks. And best of all severe depression is just one of those personal problems that is easily taken care of when you are a man. Man, oh man... Dr. Phil is a POS and so are the grandmother and mother. The gamer guy is an unfortunate product of his not-so supportive family.
@@murdercloak7578 People like excuses. They feel bad for someone and boom, suddenly they make up 100s of excuses for the dude. The pandemic has been around for a year, so what is the excuse they will come up with for before that?
Apartments are $1000+ a month unless you wanna get stabbed, minimum wage is about $1500 a month (give or take), what do you do if you have bills that add up to about $1000 a month? Dr Phil is out of touch with minimum wage workers because he’s wealthy
I agree with you. It’s not that easy in the situation he is right now to suddenly get a job. He seems to be in a loop of demotivation and laziness, should probably get professional help. But I guess getting on dr. Phil would be better. It blows my mind that his parents see dr. Phil as an option for this I guess his parents wanted attention on the internet or the money of dr. phil for being on the talk show.
if you’re 20+ years old don’t feel bad if you still have to live at home with your family. houses and apartments are expensive and times are hard. do your best, save your money, and you’ll be out before you know it!
Your comment was exceptionally uplifting! 🙏 More people need to hear this. Thank you friend hope you had a great day and continue to work on whatever it is you're working on!
Me, who left home at 18, is 20 now and struggling with rent, living of instant noodles with no job rn cause of the pandemic and practically going insane cause of loneliness: y-yeahhh!! Leaving home is soooo coolll!!! You should uhh.. totally want it!!
parents threw me out at 18 even tho i was paying 300 bucks a month to share a room with a sibling. got into an accident which took me out of work for a week, and i couldnt keep up with rent, car insurance/maintenance, and my phone bill. almost worked myself to (literal) death just to stay afloat when i was living alone, then they brought me back when i was 21 after i lost my house, job, and car all within a week. then covid hit a few months later
Honestly, as a woman I wish I had stayed home instead of buying a condo because then the 2008 recession hit me. I could have spent more time with my dad before he passed years later and saved serious money.
I agree. I am 25 and still live with parents. Hell my oldest sister lived with us until she got married in her mid 30s. There is nothing wrong with staying with family. Actual family that supports one another.
it’s really nice to hear Ken, who’s obviously super successful & self sufficient, say that he doesn’t feel right about poking fun at Connor because he see’s himself in him. Gives someone like me who’s also struggling in similar ways feel hopeful
He is staying in his home and is being afraid to venture into the world, yet, when he’s doing exactly that, agreeing to come onto a televised show and confronting these issues, he’s attacked. He’s more likely to leave even more socially anxious and depressed than when he came in.
Doubt it... probably will get angry, get sad, and will be so sick of the way he lives and will then venture out and do something, hope this is giving him the initiative to actually live. You can’t just talk down and give pity to some just because they are depressed the way Connor is. . he hasn't done any of the things that Connor would truly like to do, he could probably tell you that himself. He has social anxiety and a lot of issues that leave a person with 2 options, step outside and confronting who you truly are and slowly get better, or just stay inside and not deal with anything at all and slowly drive yourself into depression and insanity.
I feel like Dr. Phil should notice that there usually is depression when people sleep way too much and distract themselves with technology and do not wash. Also having fear for driving should not be judged, blaming for fears is not very productive. This guy needs therapy, not blaming that he is disgusting and lazy. Edit props to Mary for the awesom new setup! Ken you are lucky man 😍
Can't agree more. It's disgusting to see someone who calls himself a doctor being so arrogant and toxic. People with depression already think they're lazy and worthless. Having a "doctor" declare and solidify those things on national tv is going to make the patient so much worse. I've seen Phil do this before. He has no clue what depression is. Despicable.
Back when our house flooded, I slept around 12 hours straight some days. That year was one of the roughest years of my life. Even now during this point in my life, I sleep longer than usual, but sometimes something usually forces me to wake up too many times and try to go back to sleep late morning. I can probably get 8 hours of sleep max. Some form of hallucination, either a sound or touch frightening enough to convince me that I should not under any circumstances go back to sleep. Some days I'm working from home and I just don't stop working when I clock out, just stay on my computer and complete tasks because I feel like there's nothing better to do. I might bathe myself well, but I can definitely relate to the other issues.
@@perrilewis180 He's got a doctorate in clinical psychology (though haven't renewed his license in over a decade), which just makes everything much worse. People don't drop out of school for no reason, it's clear he was depressed, he had no friends, and was probably alone throughout highschool. On top of that not brushing or showering is a clear indication of mental stress
seconding this! he reminds me so much of myself when i was living with family - dealing with constant verbal abuse/humiliation while battling severe depression, undiagnosed adhd & autism, and feeling absolutely stuck. i hope that guy gets out soon & to a better place so he can start to thrive. there's a reason he needs escapism for 12-17 hours a day.

All the more reason he needs to get his life together. You don't just sit around doing nothing and expect to come out of depression. You have to get yourself up and make improvements, even if it's a little bit at a time. Depression doesn't just magically cure itself. You have to work at it.
"laziness" to the point of hygiene issues is oftentimes a sign of severe mental illness. as someone who experiences this on a daily basis, its mindblowing that "doctor" phil cant seem to wrap his mind around that

Ahh this one sucks he just sounds depressed, he's only 22, and its a pandemic?? If his parnts can continue to support him during a time like this, then the right thing to do is to just continue. Maybe add some rules like he must do his own dishes, laundry, etc. eventually work towards making him pay rent. I feel like when I was younger I thought still being at home at 22 was odd, but I'm 23 now and most people I know still live at home or they recently moved back.
It's really not that odd. I mean hell I didn't move out till I turned 24 cause I just couldn't find a place that was affordable. Cost of living is only getting higher, plus with people losing their jobs getting laid off and having to resort to applying for unemployment, it's getting even harder to pay for rent.
@@TheEvilWithinFan I think it's "odd" to young people because of how media portrays life- like you have to go to college immediately after highschool, have a job during that time, have your own place by the time you finish college, and then have a full time job in your industry. Otherwise you're shamed and you're told that you wasted your time on a useless degree. It's ridiculous and fortunately it's changing drastically, specifically for the pandemic, but some people (boomers, or people who had everything handed to them) still think that people need to own their own place by the time they're 18 and it's just not realistic anymore.
This. I suffer from chronic depression and daily tasks sometimes feel impossible. Ive finally been able to get use to eating normally, sleeping alright, etc. Its not as simple as people may think. Im 19 and had to quit my job because i was having panic attacks all day. Videos games help me not to think too much, thinking of which brings up trauma and further depression. People dont understand that its just not as easy as being forced to do something. Your body will shut down.
I was a gamer too, wouldn't do much or clean. It came down to my mom crying saying she needed me to change that I realized I was wasting my time. I had bipolar and chronic depression, haven't taken a single pill for my issues just wired my brain to say "Hey you have a life use it and stop worrying about stuff that won't matter a few years from now." Just stop thinking about it
"I'm Connor!" "No! I'm Connor!" There are so many people like this for legitimate personal reasons, this dude is just the only one getting put on blast. We are all Connor at one point or another. The guy just seems like he has a lot of people telling him what they think he should do instead of helping this dude get on his feet and make a life on his own.
I think thats the issue, obviously the kids are kind of depressed, specially Connor, we dont know how their mom raised them but it seems to me (from personal experience) they did neglect them, there was never a hand pushing them up. Mom was just waiting for a miracle now that they are grown.
Yeah that’s exactly what they should be doing - helping him achieve these things. There are some kids who have it all figured out for themselves and then there are kids who need guidance. If he has some trauma in his past, that could absolutely cause arrested development at that stage of life.
I’mDamo yes because not everyone’s circadian rhythm is synced up. Night owls are a biological leftover attribute from hunter/gatherer days. The morning people would sleep at night while the night owls were sentries. Also, society benefits from chronic night owls (trucking, shipping, fire/police, nursing, etc.).

I also suffered with anxiety. Which I also had to take medication for (same ages) So yes even if you actually do have depression, anxiety. You do know what you inherently doing, but you have no control over it. Both anxiety and depression are really hard to get rid of. For me it took about 4 years, other takes longer, or even never. Dr. Phil grew up in a time when a minimum wage job could probably pay for rent, food etc. We don't live in that world anymore. I feel like saying 'Ok Boomer' to him. I don't know anyone who's 22 and has a house. Most people can barely afford rent on a flat
But atleast make a contribution in the house. Like paying electric bills. Simple as that. Thats what we do when we have a job. Not just like using electricity there and doesnt make any contributions. Thats laziness.
Dr. Phil is so entitled in this video! He's so rich and detached from reality, he victimised a young kid with depression and doesn't know how and what to do with his life. His face when dr Phil is telling him lazy and likes with excuses is kinda sad. He wasn’t even going against it he was just staring at him and looked depressed.
There’s nothing wrong with living with your family. We find it “wrong” or “odd” because western culture strives for independence. In other cultures it’s actually acceptable to live tighter as a family even after marriage. Some live with an entire family such as grandparents, parents, and siblings. It’s not wrong. No one should be humiliated for their living situation, it’s hard out here. Instead of telling him he’s a loser give him a life coach and some therapy. So he can love himself. He seems depressed and you can’t fix that by just yelling at someone.
I’m 24 and I don’t see myself leaving my parents’ home anytime soon. It’s cheaper, I’m not lonely, and I just genuinely love being around my mom. She enjoys doing stuff with me and I enjoy doing stuff with her. It’s not that I’m dependent on her, it’s just that I’d miss her too much to live on my own, and if I don’t have to, why should I? I’m still getting my Masters and paying for my education and medical stuff, so I’m not a leech
Cost of living goes up. It makes financial sense to live with family & pool your money. Living on your own is a boomer western value. Outs out of date in today's world. I also love how they always shit over gamers but people spending all day watching TV doesn't gat the same abuse. Addictive behavior is a system of a larger issue. Attacking the symptom with boomer ideas helps nobody. If anything it'll just make him worse.

I would think Dr. Phil, spending the amount of time he did in the Forensic Psychology field, would be able to recognize depression and self-loathing in a person. Apparently not.
A global pandemic is literally the absolute worst time to judge someone for not being financially self-sustaining. Dr. Phil would travel back to the Great Depression and be like "how come you don't have a job??"
He doesn't have a GED because he "can't remember things" dude is 22. The pandemic hasn't been going on for 4-5 years. He needs to face his video game addiction on his own and quit makimg excuses.
@Justin Nguyen I was just like this kid. I wasn't just lazy. I was depressed and shy. It took a lot of encouragement and making the leap to come out of it and extreme shaming only hurts people like this.
I’m literally 22, graduated high school with almost every award possible, work my @$$ off at a full time job, go to college full time (no debt)... can’t afford the 3x rent California requires.
I'm also 22 with a DEGREE and I still live at home because my current job doesn't pay me enough to move out on my own. But here's the kicker, I NEED my current job for health insurance because I've been diabetic since i was one and my medicine would cost me 2k a month otherwise. So yeah, this episode really hurt me.
yup, even the most dedicated can be restricted or have unpleasant surprises. as long as you keep fighting for whats yours and what you are worth, thats the best you can do.
22 since oct and did all the 'right' things (working in high school, college in high school, classes every semester, an as degree in tech, found an apmt with2 roommates) and eventually my depression caught up with me and sent me in a horrible spiral that caused me to leave school last year (im back this semester, fingers crossed). there is no correct pace and dr phil is full of shit
I've been called lazy so many times because of my depression. Being depressed can be as immobilizing as grieving & feel like it too. I've had many days where i don't even feel like i can get out of bed because i'm buried under what can only be described as agony. Depressed people need people who can reassure them that they're doing great when they manage to pull themselves out of bed despite the massive hill their climbing that everyone else doesn't see. It's the little victories with depression. Slowly inching your way back to stability but if you have people around you devaluing your effort & belittle you for it then it's almost impossible to get well enough to do the things they tell you are "so easy". Negative reinforcement doesn't work for depression.
It is very possible. People like Pewdiepie started off with online dating too because it was distance, fear, money, etc... it takes preparations and especially during covid. Connor at least has an online partner. Its more than nothing. If they both are happy the way it is, then thats their life. No need to push meeting irl when they arent ready.
Dr. Phil isn't even a licensed therapist anymore. He's got no business doing any of this. Especially after that showing. You get someone depressed enough and do that their self worth goes through the floor and suddenly bad thoughts start happening and it goes to a very, very dark place. Shame on Dr. Phil.
I always knew my incredibly uncomfortable feelings towards doctor Phil was more than drama stressing me out, he's a genuinely awful person and id always get into the habit of imagining how he'd berate my situation and put it in the light for millions of people to see and dogpile on top of.
He’s got all the training to be licensed, but the reason he’s never renewed his license/gotten a license to practice in California is so that he can do his show. If he was licensed he’d have to follow confidentiality regulations that would make it impossible for him to produce the tv show. He’s essentially exploiting a hipaa loophole for profit. I do love me some funny doctor phil episodes, where you know people are on there for clout and he digs into them, but situations like this are so gross. I feel like he’s become increasingly out of touch over the recent years.
Point is that is a man baby and if hes depressed its because hes so comfortable in life he can be depressed. If his ass had to feed and cloth himself hed be to worried about living to be depressed
This episode genuinely makes me mad, no amount of berating and humiliation is going to motivate him to get out of bed in the morning. I have been in the same situation, I have my ged, I take care of myself and I also know that if i was being humiliated on live tv, it would have pushed me over the edge.
As someone who's dealt with anxiety and depression my entire life, I see a lot of my own past and current behaviors in this guy (I'm not proud of it, it just is that way). I really think if I was humiliated like he was, I would've gone home from the show and killed myself. I hope he's doing better and getting help now.
By the by the time the parents groom this loser, it was pretty much too late for him to ever amount to anything. Social media the phone and the internet are the great babysitter for all teenagers now. People aren't even aware that the average teenager spend eight to nine hours of screen time per day
This episode *really* shows that Dr. Phil isn't the doctor he claims to be. He can be sassy and entertaining with spoiled brats and weirdos, but the moment a person with actual issues come along who needs real help he doesn't know what to do. I'm not depressed and even I felt extremely unmotivated. What an asshole
Let's motivate Connor with a controlled shock. No but seriously, there's nothing wrong with setting expectations for someone living in your house, like he should do his own laundry, dishes, and have a job by a certain time. But this dude simply getting a job isn't going to solve his problems. Trying to get a house/apartment on minimum wage is going to have him living at damn near poverty levels and forget trying to go to school to gain another skillset. I hate when older generations think since they could buy a house and support a family by 22 with just a bacehlors degree, everyone else should too, like the economy and workforce hasn't massively changed in the past 50 years.
Past generations were able to do it with a high school diploma. My dad at age 18 was able to rent a 2 bedroom house, support me and my mom while being a manager at taco bell working 40 hrs a week and have fun money left over.
Past generations were able to do it even being drop outs! They were handing out mortgages like candy back in the day. Both of my grandfathers dropped out in early high school to go into the work force, and both lived prosperous lives with houses, cars, families, kids. It was so different back then.
All this is fair and true, but if you are living in someone's home and they are financially supporting you, you can at least help out around the house without getting all bitchy about it. Nobody owes you your meals and a roof, so if they are loving enough to provide it for free, it's pretty pathetic to also expect to take a pass on weeding the garden and doing the dishes, especially since it's his Gramdma

you're absolutely right, i'm almost in the exact same position as connor and it's genuinely because every time i try to do something and ask for help on how to do it i'm told "figure it out on your own" but you bet if i do it on my own and mess up i'm going to be yelled at for it. so why would i even try to do something like look into apartments or even simply tend to a garden... when i can just do nothing. why get yelled at for something new when i can just get used to being called worthless? and i'm willing to bet connor has that exact same mindset but for whatever reason, the adults here just aren't grasping it.
Wanting someone in this generation to be self sufficient at ANY age, let alone 22, is a joke. We don't get paid enough to make rent, car insurance, car payments, cell phone, electricity, food, etc etc. I'm 33 years old, have a college education, several certificates I've earned, and I still struggle to survive. Dr. Phil should be talking to our goverment about this shit, not our youth.
Everytime Dr. Phil's intro plays and he says "This is a safe space"... I roll my eyes. How is TV/the internet a safe space? Not even including the fact that he often makes fun of his guests who clearly have issues. He never actually provides psychological help himself he just pays for someone else to help them after he's made fun of em.
Dr Phill: He says you've never helped him with his Mmos. Grandma: He asks me to log into his main account and farm his daily quests, but i dont know how, i never lerned that. Dr Phill: Well you're not gonna learn it sitting on your ass cross-stitching all day.

I don't think the guy, and obviously his family doesn't, realizes hes experiencing depression on a pretty high level. Hes isolating himself so much and trying so hard not to think about anything and the games allow him to focus on a mission or solving a problem that he knows can be solved because it's already programmed into the game. He needs some help :(

Isn't the point that he's not working or in school? You went to school and it sounds like you are working as well since you're paying off your student debts. This guy is a mooch
22 isn't even that old, it's weird how these boomers expect young 20s to have their life figured out when majority of jobs are paying minimum wage which isn't enough to afford rent & living costs. If your parents are allowing you to continue living with them in your 20s, take advantage of it, it's nothing to be ashamed of and it's pathetic for Dr Phil to be trying to humiliate someone for it. The pandemic is a valid excuse for not having a job, a lot of people are currently unemployed due to lockdowns. Dr Phil really doesn't seem capable of relating to the average person, take away his money and his TV show and he'll be in the same boat. He doesn't even deserve the doctor title, he's not a doctor, and he definitely made things worse here with someone who has depression.
It feels as though the people who raised him didn't teach him how to be a productive adult and now they're mad that he just doesn't magically know how.
Dr. Phil's ignorance and arrogance really showed in this episode. The kid needs motivation, not humiliation. You have a Ph.D. You should be able to figure that out.
Except he lost its medical license, and before all shows, make the patient sign a contrat basically saying they understand Dr.Phills just give advice, not medical instructions. Edit: As Curtis Thatcher said, he did not loose his license, he let it expire, because having a licence bounds you to the medical confidentiality.

The fact that there are so many people who think we should be out on our own with life being “easier” nowadays makes it so much worse. I dont even know why i would bother when so many people clearly dont care and would even bring me down for struggling. It just seems like a sad state for humanity.
i am the same. i just don't know what to do in life, i have missed so many opportunities because of low self esteem and shyness, not to mention the fear of failure, yet everytime i am about to have the opportunity to do something great, it just slips away because of things beyond my control.

It’s actually comforting reading the comments here, how most people really understand it. That seemed like the most reasonable of his point ngl. By 22 (especially if you skip out on college) you've had 4 whole years to figure out some situation or another. First place might be absolute trash but if you find one close to a factory? You'll be the most reliable employee there and make that garbage place slowly easier to pay for. “you’re.22 and not living on your own” damn dr. phil, what would he say to almost every resident in the middle east and south asia where living with your parents (even if you’re in your 30s) is the norm?
@@IronPiedmont yeah usually people separates from family permanently after marriage or going overseas for study and work. There are more joint families than nuclear families in Asia but that doesnt mean you can just be lazy and jobless. Joint Family can differ from staying in the same flat/house to staying in separate in the same building or very close to each other like next door neighbor. We strongly believe that we must take care of our parents when they are old because we love and they will be lonely without us. Because of this belief nuclear gets created for 3 reasons. 1st is of course privacy and freedom, 2nd is for work and going to a better place and 3rd is for not taking responsibly for their parents when they gets old which is the most common reason. Most Parents divides their property between their children when they gets old as they earned for their children and hopes that in their last days their children will take care of them and by take care they means just give them food and shelter thats all they asks but many people just casts their parents out of their own house and leaves them in Old Age Home to die alone. And thats why most people in Asia prefers to be with their parents and siblings. Also its more convenient for middle class and lower middle class families because of their financial state.
pretty common in India to live with your parents and even grandparents because you are suppose to take care of those who took care of you when they get old, some people live their whole lives in the same house as their folks rather then shoving them into an aged care home. I don't know why people are so mean and judgemental to others that live with their folks especially if the parents are old and need care also now days with everything getting more expensive people cant afford to move out even if they have a job unless they want to struggle needlessly
Dr. Phil need to realize there isn't anything wrong with living with your family still...especially if you can't get out on your own in the state the society is in right now.....
I started working at the age of 14, had my own apartment and vehicle when I was 18, and purchased my own house when I was 22. I’m 32 now. I feel bad for Connor. I've been really depressed during this pandemic and if my family and Dr. Phil ganged up on me like that I would probably have suicidal thoughts again. Connor needs support and therapy.
Exactly. Humiliating someone with clear depression is so incredibly dangerous, as it could easily push them toward suicidal thoughts/actions. It's so obvious that Dr. Phil does not understand depression. Literally, all he did was tell Connor to suck it up or stay worthless.
Dr Phil sounds exactly like my grandpa; who says he did all these things like get a job earlier than me/ paid for his own housing young, but he did this all in the 50s/60s. The world is 100% not what it was when grandpa earned more money than I ever would working at a grocery store to pay his low rent. Dr Phil is another old man that is aging like a fine milk because he thinks the world's situation is the same for the younger generation as it was for him. "I went through it, why can't you?" Because you didn't live in the same environment as we are now. There's no way to get old people to understand this, though, since they're impossible to get to change their minds.
You're right. I hear you, I've seriously struggled financially throughout my teens and 20's as well. Remember, though, that Dr. Phil's parents and grandparents lived through the flu pandemic, WW2, and the recession. Those were hard times that people barely survived, but they made it through. Its extremely difficult, but not humanly impossible to overcome. The point is, even if you don't bounce back hard, at least to make the effort to get up a little bit, even if you don't come out strong.
The real issue isn't just what generation they're from, but if they actually want to hear someone out instead of just listening to them talk about their situation just to compare it to their youth and how it was so much harder for them. A lot of the time it's going to be comparing apples to oranges to peaches and so on. My grandmother actively converses with lots of younger people than her and hears all kinds of stories of upbringings and life surprises that have made peoples' lives difficult and she has an understanding, or more so an awe that the person is doing better than she thinks she would be doing in their shoes. Meanwhile, her ex husband isn't talkative with many people outside retired vets like himself and is very close-minded, my mom and older brother can be like that as well so it isn't just a Boomer mindset.
I love you guys so much for how you explained that basically everyone besides Connor was seeing things from a boomer point of view. Things are so different for young people now than they were decades ago, and the older generations seem to fail to realize that and tend to shame and condemn the younger generations for not achieving the same things that they did when they were young.
Dr.Phil: you’re 22! Why are you living with your grandmother? Me:🤦🏻♀️ Um... the pandemic? And have you seen the economy and tried to get by on a job you can actually get with no work experience (even with an education, can assume it is way harder if you don’t)
Your comment hits right at home with me. I just graduated from college with Bachelor Degree to only be in the middle of a pandemic and see all the entry level positions need 2 to 3 years experience. On top of it all my husband is high risk group and doesn't want me to work away from home until the vaccine is being mass distributed to everyone. I feel terrible and guess what my daily outlet for stress is. A videogame XD

Those of us with mental illness, I'm assuming he's dealing with depression, may harm or even kill ourselves because of such treatment.
Happy to take the piss outta everyone else thou ... just not peeps that remind him of himself? Lmao

@Bruv Stfu no it's what we call people who show symptoms of depression lmao
I feel like Dr. Phil should notice that there usually is depression when people sleep way too much and distract themselves with technology and do not wash.
Also having fear for driving should not be judged, blaming for fears is not very productive.
This guy needs therapy, not blaming that he is disgusting and lazy.
Edit props to Mary for the awesom new setup! Ken you are lucky man 😍
Yeah it’s almost like Dr Phil doesn’t know anything about depression or the impact it has on many in society right now!
He doesn't have a license to do this and probably haven't heard of depression
@@perrilewis180 He's got a doctorate in clinical psychology (though haven't renewed his license in over a decade), which just makes everything much worse. Since he knows exactly what depression is, and knows exactly what publicly humiliating this kid would do, yet he still does it. He knows just how rough this kid has it, yet instead of helping him, he chooses to exploit him, while pretending to help.
People don't drop out of school for no reason, it's clear he was depressed, he had no friends, and was probably alone throughout highschool. On top of that not brushing or showering is a clear indication of mental stress
Best one yet, thank you 🙏🙏
seconding this! he reminds me so much of myself when i was living with family - dealing with constant verbal abuse/humiliation while battling severe depression, undiagnosed adhd & autism, and feeling absolutely stuck. i hope that guy gets out soon & to a better place so he can start to thrive. there's a reason he needs escapism for 12-17 hours a day.
He would be better off living on his own. Trial by fire, you learn by doing. His family’s negativity toward him is telling him he can’t do it.
@@seansweeney3365 interestingly this is a true concept in erikson’s theory on psychosocial development. In stage 5 of the theory one can either become industrious or feel inferior. It’s dependent on ones environment and feedback from authority figures.

You mean doing things that he should have been doing WHEN HE WAS 16!!!!!!
I had bipolar and chronic depression, haven't taken a single pill for my issues just wired my brain to say "Hey you have a life use it and stop worrying about stuff that won't matter a few years from now." I think thats the issue, obviously the kids are kind of depressed, specially Connor, we dont know how their mom raised them but it seems to me (from personal experience) they did neglect them, there was never a hand pushing them up.
Dr phil is trying hard to find people with issues during covid hahaha

I truly believe people like this are severely depressed. No one WANTS to be a loser. They need to change their life to be happy and motivated, but they feel they're stuck in the situation they're in, and hopeless.
Some people are leeches. He knows they wont kick him out, so he just does what he does.
So true also getting used to that comfort is an issue. I'm not living with my parents but I also know I could do better for myself just needs some positive push. Dr. Phil is pushing very negative tho.

True. I still live with my family because i find comfort in them.
In Italy it is or was quite common, many took care of their parents, instead of dumping them in a retirement home.
Cost of living goes up. It makes financial sense to live with family & pool your money. Living on your own is a boomer western value. Outs out of date in today's world.

He’s been glorified for way too long as being helpful but he actually does more harm than good.
Dr. Phil isn't even a licensed therapist anymore. He's got no business doing any of this. Especially after that showing.

@Bass Armstrong Is that a cultural thing like it is in Asia?
