For me it's also heavy influenced by nostalgia, but I would say that the play sets (city/friends) still are made in the same way as the classics in terms of play but not so much in terms of creativity as the part are often more specialized.
@@pastajensen I had a few iteration of airport fire tender over the years. 94 version was 4 wide n 10 stud long. Everything was compact inside. 06 version was 6 wide 16 studs long . No hose included unlike the 94 set. Next was the 13 version. This one is 8 wide 30 studs long. Although it now holds 2 minifigs, it has as much accessories as the 94 version. Indeed more details, but still does the same function.
Yesteryears sets are compact , functional and fun. Today sets are so huge yet at times lack substance.
