  • Everything you need to know about the Aisin 6 speed automatic transmission in the R56 Mini Cooper S
    In this video I’m going to tell you everything you need to know about the Aisin 6 speed automatic transmission found in the R56 Mini Cooper S. If you haven’t already, please hit that subscribe button and stick around, you’re gonna want to watch this whole video.
    Maintenance
    BMW claims that the Aisin 6 speed automatic transmission has a lifetime fluid. That is simply not true. You need to change your transmission fluid every 80,000 miles with the fluid below 👇
    Mobil 1 ATF3309 Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid, 6 Quarts (commission earned) amzn.to/321K7jl
    Motive Products 1735 Fluid Transfer Pump (commissions earned) amzn.to/31YaJC4
    Shifting
    The Aisin 6 speed automatic is a Steptronic transmission equipped with Agitronic. This gives you the ability to up or downshift with the paddle shifters located on the steering wheel. You don’t need to be in manual shift or M/S mode to use the paddle shifters.
    You are also able to shift with the gear selector itself when you are in M/S mode. Moving the gear selector forward will shift down 1 gear and pulling the gear selector back will upshift 1 gear.
    Gear lever positions
    P=park
    R=reverse
    N=neutral
    D=drive
    M/S=manual shift
    Gear ratios
    1st gear: 4.044
    2nd gear: 2.371
    3rd gear: 1.556
    4th gear: 1.159
    5th gear: 0.852
    6th gear: 0.672
    Reverse: 3.193
    (Final drive: N14 & N18 engine: 3.683)
    Shift firmness
    You get 3 different shift settings on the Aisin 6 speed automatic transmission that change the firmness of the shifts.
    For the shifts to be at their firmest, put the gear selector in M/S mode and press the sport button.
    To have the softest shifts put the gear selector in drive.
    Pros
    1. Paddle shifters allow you to keep your hands on the steering wheel.
    2. Not having a clutch makes left foot braking much easier.
    3. You’ll never miss a gear with an automatic gear box.
    4. Automatics are more consistent on the drag strip.
    Cons
    1. You can’t rev higher than 6,500 rpm (even with a tune).
    2. No LSD available (but they do get the e-diff).
    3. Will downshift for you if you let the rpm get down to 1,500 rpm.
    4. Can’t launch at an rpm higher than your torque converter & brake setup allow

    I have a very similar car to the one behind you. A silver 2009 R56 Cooper S automatic. I find it shifts jerkily and doesn’t anticipate downshifts half as well as I’d like when slowing down unless it’s in one of the sport modes, but then it hangs on to gears a bit too long during acceleration... Ideally I’d like the normal upshifts with the earlier downshifts of the ‘first level’ sport mode.
    I also don’t like the fact that this auto changes mid-bend if it feels like it. Very annoying.
    It also reverts very quickly back to regular ‘D’-mode when you’ve manually downshifted going down a hill to get a bit of engine braking, meaning the car will shift back up and start gaining speed on its own and running away again. Very frustrating.
    Otherwise ours has done 120,000 km (76,000 miles) so time to change the fluid, I guess! Thanks for that advice.
    Also I watched this hoping you’d tell us which ratios the torque converter locks up on. Do you know? Thanks.

    My minis got a wicked downshift to second, it’s worse in sport mode. It will screech the tires and give you whiplash. We’ve installed the sonnex upgraded valve body and dealer programmed. Still have the issue. The way the trans operates and the performance I like, but this issue kinda sucks

    BMW says one never needs to change the ATF. This is nonsense. My car is now 9 years old and 43700 kms on the clock and I changed out my fluid on account of sheer age. JWS 3309 fluid is expensive when bought at BMW but in India we have no other option. BMW India won’t give you child parts like the transmission oil filter and gasket and magnets. One has to buy all of this from other sources outside of India. Like Mini Mania etc. Thing is you can’t swap out all the fluid at one go. It takes two or three drain and fill cycles. It needs a total of about 6 litres. But you’ll end up buying 7 litres and do the drain and fill in stages, driving the car a bit in the middle so as to get a mix going. In the end, in the Aisin Torque Converter you would have ended up changing around 90% of the fluid as I have. But it is worth it because the gears feel lovely and smooth now.

    Great video ! , I was wishing my countryman was a manual , but after a few days I kind of enjoyed the auto more. I do miss the fun of rowing through the gears but being able to just cruise when my leg is tired is nice. The one pro that I miss about manuals is I don’t have to keep my foot on the brake while at red lights. I know you probably don’t have the that issue but I live in a very populated area with tons of traffic so having a manual is nice for that aspec

    Do you know by any chance if top speed is reached in 5th or in 6th gear on this Steptronic? I'm asking because in Sport Mode the transmission will not use 6th gear unless I manually shift into 6th gear. This makes me believe 6th gear is an overdrive for fuel economy.

    Do you happen to know what the sensor on the front of the transmission is? I have a 2007 R56 non-S and the multi-pin connector on that sensor keeps getting transmission fluid in it giving me a CEL and throwing a code I can't remember off the top of my head. When I disconnect it and clean out the fluid the code clears by itself and the CEL goes off. I want to replace the sensor but I don't know what it is. I'm also wondering if I will have to drain the transmission in order to replace the sensor once I figure out what it is so I can order it. I haven't been able to find anything on it so far.
