  • Big changes are coming - one of ERCOT's Ancillary Services is about to be deployed much more often.
On Tuesday (June 18th), ERCOT's Board approved NPRR 1224 - which will introduce a new trigger to release ECRS capacity earlier.
Following its launch in June last year, ERCOT actually increased the potential for ‘artificial scarcity’.
This happens when prices are high across the system, despite ERCOT having sufficient available capacity.
And, across last summer, this led to excess costs of up to $8 billion in ERCOT's Wholesale Market - according to the Independent Market Monitor.
The proposed trigger will allow the control room to release up to 500 MW of ECRS capacity to the economic dispatch when the Power Balance Penalty Curve is violated by at least 40 MW for ten minutes or more.
This will mean higher cycling rates for batteries that are carrying ECRS responsibility - due to more frequent deployments.
And it will also mean fewer instances of prices above $1,000/MWh when system reserves are healthy.
We'll keep you updated as these changes are finalized.

Great video, have you guys looked at NPRR1186 or NPRR1096. How are these affecting the SOC managing when bidding for ECRS.
