I JUST ALMOST SHIT FROM LAUGHING SO HARD.
Then she should watch "Lincoln" with Daniel Day-Lewis. His last film unfortunately.
You mean that he is a Vampire hunter?
@@jackjones5314 no, that he traveled from the past with Bill & Ted.

My dad is a Retired Colonel and everytime we saw this he said to me.."If the Army was that much fun, everyone would join up.". Always cracks me up.
I believe enlistment increased following Stripes' release...........
Harold Ramis also directed Groundhog day. He and Bill Murray had a falling out during the filming that lasted until right before Harold died. Sad.
Though they apparently did patch things up shortly before Ramis' death. Murray also gave tribute to him at the Oscars a few months later.
@@Rmlohner Didn't know about the Oscars tribute, but, in the "Movies that Made Us" episode about Ghostbusters, they went into this, and... yes, they did patch things up. Bill heard Harold was... on his way out, showed up at the police station in Harold's hometown and just asked them, "Bring me to Harold". I remember tearing up a bit when I heard this, 'cause it was, I believe, one of Harold's children telling the story. I didn't know either of them, obviously, but just... glad they worked it out, y'know?
Thankfully they managed to make peace before Ramis' death
So sad they spent so many years not talking to one another after creating so much gold together. Life's too short.
Supposedly, Ramis was in the works adapting the book "Guru" for a Del Close biopic, and Sony had rights. Sony also owned The Second City, where Bill Murray had some sort of deal where if they ever made a Del movie he would play Del and produce the film.
Eventually, Ramis dropped the project due to the impasse, and instead directed *Year One* with Michael Cera and Jack Black.
Ashleigh: "Is that an RPG?"
And now we need to start a campaign to get her to watch Red Dawn.
I totally hate the original "Red Dawn" not my "cup of tea"
Well, I mean it is rocket propelled, and it does explode like a grenade...sort of. Technically she wasn't too far off...again, sort of.
The original, of course, and maybe save the remake for a far-distant future.
@@82ndAbnVet well it's a stretch but yeah...maybe...sure...kinda.

"Quick Change" is another great underrated Bill Murray comedy.
One of my favourite bill Murray movies and its got Randy Quaid too
So is "Meatballs". 😂
"...and I'll have you assigned to a weather station above the Arctic Circle..." Ashleigh: "and we know what happens there... The Thing." Haha! Love it!
If you didn't notice, Russ is Harold Ramis, who played Egon alongside Bill Murray's Peter in the Ghostbusters films.
he also played the Doctor in Groundhog Day
He also wrote this movie and Animal House and directed many RIP
He was also the undercover cop in Airheads with Brendan Fraser
Also directed the timeless classic"CADDYSHACK"!😳👌🤗
Beat me to it. It was the one sticking point I had through the whole reaction.
Fish Called Wanda is amazing. I hope you enjoy it.
Well there's one thing about the movie that annoyed me.
@@kenmolinaro it is my favorite part
Fun Fact:. The song "Do-Wa-Diddy" became an official Army cadence because of this movie!
OH!
Wow... Even the Army can have a cool sense of humor.
Uh, it was ALREADY a cadence before that. And the Army doesn't have "official" cadences, it's just whatever you want to do, some are more popular than others.
@@ffjsb Are these cadances a rythmic beat to help everyone march in unison, or are they to keep you from letting your mind wander?
@@lawr5764 Mostly to keep everyone in unison, but it also helps to eliminate the monotony, and builds a little camaraderie.
Fun fact, this films basic training scenes were filmed at Ft Knox, Kentucky . Formerly the home of Armor and Cavalry. I myself went thru basic training in 1991 at Ft Knox. The area where everyone first arrived is where I arrived. The barracks were part of the reception area originally built during WW2. Yes I did run the obstacle course and got my head shaved in the same barber shop. And yes we all became aware after a while where we were, some faster than others. The Do Wah Diddy cadence is a privilege you have to earn. You cannot sing it unless the Drill Sgt says so. When he starts singing it, YOU KNOW that your platoon has done really good. Lots of great memories of the movie and my time in Basic Training.
Very few of those barracks exist today. The few that are still standing were left standing for historical purposes. I spent a week in one at Ft. Leonard Wood waiting for our cycle to begin.
That whole part with them parachuting and "surviving" in the "wild' wasn't in the original movie. In fact, I've seen Stripes a billion times, but I've never seen that acid tripping scene.
That's what I was thinking
Same, though they did always keep the scene after it where Russ steps forward for being AWOL and John doesn't. It makes a LOT more sense now.
Mandela effect?
Same here
She was watching the extended cut. Which I have never seen also. Another addition to me was in the hotel after they pick up the girls in the EM50.
John Laroquette played Capt Stillman. He was also one of the 80's best character actors. His role as prosecuting attny Dan Fielding in Night Court is legendary.
Character actors like John, Steve Buscemi, etc. they should get paid more than leads.
He also played Maltz, the lone Klingon left on the Bird of Prey when Kirk and crew forcibly took control of it in _Star Trek III._ He's the one who requests Kirk to kill him.
He also played Maltz, the Klingon that Kirk refused to kill in Star Trek III.
He was also hilarious in Blind Date as the jealous ex boyfriend
One of my favorite TV shows is Night Court. The cast was incredible
You should watch "Private Benjamin", with Goldie Hawn. It's an army comedy around the same era as "Stripes". I think, that you'll like it.
Great double feature.😏
I second this recommendation!! Also it's a really great Goldie Hawn movie
Good suggestion. I'd almost forgotten about this movie.
Goldie Hawn is so underrated I feel like she’s the Dolly Parton of Hollywood
Added bonus: PJ Soles, who played Stella in this, is also in Private Benjamin which was made first. And was in Halloween three years before that.
And at some point you might want to check out Rock and Roll High School, in which she had the lead.
Must check out "Summer Rental," another John Candy classic! Also, "Spies Like Us" with Dan Ackroyd and Chevy Chase. Very funny!
I love the scene in summer rental when there in the wrong house and John Candy spills the large bag of dog food.
Summer Rental is good. "Do these look real?"
Today I learned there's a Stripes extended cut.
Holy crap I need to see that.

Far from “lesser mainstream,” this film was the second biggest U.S. money-maker in 1981, second only to the equally most excellent “Superman II,” it also is really Murray’s breakout film. “Meatballs” did OK, and he made a big impression in “Caddyshack” in a supporting role, but this established him as big box office material. It’s part of a great comedy movie continuum/universe that includes “Animal House,” “Caddyshack,” “Ghostbusters” and many others, often using the same writers, directors, and actors. It’s a weird mix of former Saturday Night Live, SCTV, and National Lampoon magazine actors and writers who created a comedy empire that lasted through “Groundhog Day.” Even John Hughes, when he wasn’t making teen comedies in the ‘80s, often was working with this troupe.
I'm thinking that it's possible that Ashleigh is referring to a more current "lesser maintream" and not so much an '80's mainstream construct.
Now 40 years later, I think most would agree that the Bill Murray's continuum of successful movies and endearing personas, with the common threads of cinemagic that are his alone, unfairly left Stripes kinda lost, except for us children of the 70's that were there to most fully enjoy him and John Candy and friends in the day.
Apologies for the unruly length of that sentence... lol
Because Stripes is a R-Rated movie...it never played on ol Broadcast TV and even on cable gets a lot less airtime. Therefore it is less well known then a lot of films that Murray was in that are PG. In the day it was definitely a phenom but the further you move from the 80's the less likely peeps are to have seen it for that reason. Still a great film tho.
Those were great times. Half the things I say are from those movies. I’m sure it got old for those I chose to surround myself with back in the day, but these young punks are completely oblivious. I must seem like a comic genius/weirdo.
@@witchking8497 it got played a lot on network tv... in an edited version. They always did a tv edit in those days.. and that's where they'd put all the extended bits in, to make up for the stuff they cut out. Or they'd shoot alternate tv takes with no swearing... or they'd dub it over
I love Meatballs. I’m probably the only one. I still quote the whole “it just doesn’t matter” scene.
"Call me Francis and I'll kill ya." "Lighten up Francis."
Still quote that to this day.
@@O_Towne_Bear. A bunch of people have heard people say "lighten up Francis," but have no idea where that came from.
It had a big resurge when Deadpool came out and the antagonist was named Francis... I believe Deadpool said it in the movie too... I have always remembered it from here though lol
That’s been a go-to comeback for years. It’s even better when the other person doesn’t understand.
I'm glad you like the movie! I grew up in the military and right now I'm an army wife for a few more months. My husband is finally retiring after 22 years. I've been a military dependent more than half of my life. It may it's even funnier because the first time I saw this I was living in West Germany in Middle School. That was the early '80s during the Cold war. So that added a whole new twist to it. I'm on your patreon so I will send you a message to remind you but summer is coming up and I know you love Bill Murray like I love Bill Murray so you need to watch the movie Meatballs. The only thing I will say is that Bill Murray is in charge of a bunch of young summer camp counselors. You can't start your summer without seeing meatballs. It is hilarious and one of my favorite movies and it's also inspiring movie. No more spoilers. You made my day Miss Ashleigh!🙌👏👍💗 Great reaction!
I lived in Nuremburg in 88-92 yeah I loved it also Wurzburg 94-96. But yeah meatballs was really good. the 2nd was ok and the 3rd just sucked. But I want BRCC (black rifle coffee company) to review this movie. As well as Sgt. Bilko I was in Wurzburg when that came out and watched it with a bunch of soldiers! That made the movie even funnier
@@tyms13 : I also grew up in the Army. Lived in Eisengen (outside of Wurzburg) from 74-77. Also 79-82 in Wurzburg. I was stationed in Kirchgoens from 85-88. Loved growing up in Germany.

Yes!! "Spies like us" is a great movie definitely worth the watch
Stella is played by P.J. Soles. She also played Lynda, the young woman strangled with the telephone cord in the original "Halloween."
She was also in "Carrie" and played Riff Randall in "Rock N Roll High School" with The Ramones.
I met P.J. Soles at a Horror Movie fan fest type thing that Kirk Hammit set up at a Metallica concert/festival. ( guitarist for Metallica/huge horror genre fan. Orion Festival Detroit 2013)
And the other woman was played by Sean Young who was Rachael in Blade Runner.
NOW i recognized her. DAMN. Also, i totally forgot Sean Young was in this movie as one of the MP girls. She has been one heck of a crush for me for a long time.
SCTV was Chicago's answer to SNL back in the '80's and '90's and recruited heavily from their theater in Toronto, making the show a favorite in Canada. Many players from both had connections to The Groundlings as well. It became sort of a big extended club. Many, if not most, of the actors in this movie come from that group. Lots of good comedic players, looking for a shot at recognition. I would bet one of the reasons Murray and Ramis did this movie was as a vehicle to employ and hang-out with their friends.
Harold Ramis has been associated with a BUNCH of great movies.....

"Stripes" is one if Bill Murray's biggest hits.
That whole bit with them paratrooping was added in the extended cut. I can see why it was edited out. Surprised you didn't highlight "Lighten up, Francis".

That movie made me pester my mom into sending me to summer camp, where I promptly broke my arm. LOL!
I would second the Meatballs nomination. I saw it as a kid so many times back in 1980 when it first showed on cable. Age inappropriate for a 12 year old, but at the time I had seen even The Shining in the theater.

I've been watching this movie ever since I was a kid, but I had no idea there was an extended version. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.
This movie premiered in New Orleans at Lake Forest Mall theater. I got in line for it accidentally (I was there for The Empire Strikes Back). Met a gorgeous blonde lady there dressed to the nines furs, jewelry, etc. She turned out to be John Laroqutte's wife. I believe he considered himself to be the star of the show when in reality it was Murray. I believe John broke his contract with NBC to appear in this film. Ended it up losing his role on Night Court and never really did much again after this. If he didn't think he was the star, his wife definitely did because she made sure I knew that the long line there was for her husband's movie.
“I didn’t know John Candy was in this!” - It’s hard to tell, he looks like a Funko Pop figure to begin with.
Sean Young the dark headed female MP is also the love interest of Harrison Ford (Rachael) in Blade Runner
Don't forget, she also played the love interest to Paul Muad'dib in Dune.

And also Lt Lois in Ace Ventura Pet detective
@@charlesrense5199 That was when no one wanted her in their movies, thinking she was going nuts.
She should have had a bigger career. I think she was absolutely gorgeous. Too bad she was kind of crazy. I always think of her in "No Way Out" with Kevin Costner, which was a GREAT film.
As a former serviceman (U.S Army) Stripes has my seal of approval.
Ashleigh,
Before the barber scene in Stripes the boys ' were told to leave their hair alone. Which they did. Not realizing that the barbers' were actually authentic Military issue barbers' !!! Therefore John Candy actually lost his real hair at that point. Look at his face on his way out the exit.❤😂
If you want more military comedies I'd recommend "Down Periscope" with Kelsey Gramer and "Kelly's Heroes" with Clint Eastwood. Both hilarious.
I thought Steve Martin's Sgt. Bilko was also pretty good
"Down Periscope" is currently streaming on UA-cam. I have the DVD and I have watched it a few times recently. Fun movie! One piece of trivia: The goofy electrician named "Nitro" (Toby Huss) is from my hometown (Marshalltown, IA), and his dad taught chemistry at the high school. I was his lab assistant (to help pay for tuition) while attending the local junior college.
Kelly's Heroes. Not billed as a comedy, but it does have a great (true!) premise and some pretty funny moments, esp. with Don Rickles, Carrol O'Conner, and Donald Sutherland in it! Also has one of the great movie songs ever, "Burning Bridges". Maybe in my top 10 all time favorite movies. Would be really fun if Ashley would check it out one Monday!!

I doubt she knows any of the Newhart shows. I was going to make a Night Court reference too, but figured it would be fodder over her cute head. So many normal references I have to stifle. She has seen and liked so many SCTV players, but well you know. Maybe we should suggest Strange Brew.
@@jackjones5314 Did you hear they are doing a reboot of Night Court?? I know for sure it’s going to be set around Dan, but I’m not sure who else from the old group is coming as well. Supposedly the judge will be Harry’s daughter since Harry Anderson is no longer with us. She is going to be played by Melissa Rauch who was Bernadette on The Big Bang Theory. Everyone else is still alive and still working it seems, so maybe there will be some cameos or whatever.
I’d love if she did Strange Brew!! I’ve been trying to get my hubby to watch it because he has no idea of what I’m talking about when I make jokes about. I’d also love for her to see Canadian Bacon! @Ashleigh Burton
@@iChristyD I would say that Richard Moll is a bit too old to play a bailiff, but then again they had Selma in the first 2 seasons...
@@Reyn_Roadstorm I loved Selma!! Roz (Marsha Warfield) has been on the show 911 the last season playing one of the main character’s mom. Mac (Charles Robinson) has been on a ton of things lately, even on a bunch of episodes of Mom, but that show just ended :(
@@jackjones5314 Strange Brew would be an excellent movie for her, given that one of the leads was the announcer in the mud wrestling bar
When a movie is over, don't rush it off as there could be bloopers!
So glad you got around to this movie. Stripes was my first rated R movie so it holds a special place in my heart. Keep up the great work!
The whole scene where they get on the plane and go on that accidental trip isn't in the original movie. No acid trip, no cuando cuando cuando. None of that. Cuts down the screen time alot. The scene where the Sgt.gets them for having left the base gets put after they were at the mud wrestling place then and Hulka getting blown up scene then comes after that.
I was wondering what was going on. I wondered initially if she'd included footage from another movie.
The checkpoint guard who ended up in his long-johns, was Joe Flaherty, also from SCTV. He also starred in the tv series Maniac Mansion, and he was the Western Union guy at the end of Back to the Future, who delivered Doc's letter to Marty after 70 years.
Ah yes! I just noticed that one... thanks for pointing it out
wow... seen this movie a ton of times and never knew there was all this extra footage... awesome
John Laroquette actually improvised the line "God, I wish was a Loofah!" when he's watching the women shower. Speaking of the shower scene, it baffles me a little bit. He has quite a wide field of view, as if there was only three walls.
In reality he was only looking at a wall and had to imagine what he was seeing. Love a man with great imagination. 🤗😉 Apparently the director even asked 'what's a loofa?' And John begged for him to leave the sentence in as someone out there might find it funny.
Never watch Extended first, even with Lord of the Rings. The pacing is always thrown off a little and you can't appreciate the new scenes. There's a reason why there's a theatrical cut.
Theatrical cut first, extended later as a special episode if you feel like it. Double Dip them views!
No, extended LOTR is the only way
@@ahad2k11 not for a *first* time watch. I'm sure *You* watched the theatrical version first as a kid then the extended edition later too
If you didn't notice, there are a number of John Candy's comedy cohorts in cameo roles. Before there was Saturday Night Live, there was Second City TV, aka"SCTV". John Candy was one of the comedians on the show, as were Joe Flaherety, who was one of the Russian Border Guards, and Dave Thomas, who was the announcer at the mud wrestling. Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis are Bob and Doug MacKenzie, who had their own movie as well called 'Strange Brew', and should be on your list of 80's movies to watch.
So many of these actors all worked together multiple times in multiple movies and TV shows.
You know what you MIGHT enjoy?
"SCTV". It was an old Canadian TV comedy show. Yes, John Candy is in it, and Dave Thomas (I think he was the announcer in the Mud Wrestling bar), and, if I caught him...one of the "russian/czech guardsmen" (Joe Flaherty).
..
Anyhoo...SCTV is just good old Canadian humour. It spawned so many careers from so many people! :)
Harold Ramis who played Russel Ziskey was also a director. He directed the classic GroundHog Day starring Bill Murray.
I suggest that you watch Stir Crazy (1980), Neighbors (1982) stars Dan Ackroyd and John Belushi, Catholic Boys (1984), Back To School (1986) and Funny Farm (1988) with Chevy Chase.
Always entertaining, Ashleigh more so than the movie, and that is plenty entertaining itself!
I remember my uncle saying when he was in the military Stripes came out and everyone was marching to Do Wah Diddy
They still did when I went in.
I actually won a radio contest back in the day by naming the Sergeant in Stripes. I think it was for breakfast for 2 at Denny's.
For future reference. When you see "extended cut," think of it as that "one trip too many" thru the buffet line. It is literally proof that there can be too much of a good thing. Avoid them.
Not necessarily.. The Highlander and Lethal Weapon (the first anyway) extended cut is definitely worth it.
@@mcgilj1 True. Plus the extended cut versions of the Lord of the Rings trilogy are better than the theatrical releases. Going from 9 hours of greatness to 12 hours of awesomeness is well worth it. Of course I grew up reading those books and The Silmarillion over 20 times so I'm a bit biased 😉🤪🧙♂️✨🧝♀️🧝♂️
To me, "Extended Cut" implies footage that was cut for pacing. I.E. every movie has deleted scenes, and an extended cut is just sticking them back in. Thus, I would watch the original theatrical cut, for a probably better overall cinematic experience. Having said that, I would watch the extended cut for subsequent viewings, because 1) I must like the movie enough to watch it again, and 2) pacing matters less on a rewatch.
Great examples of this are the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and most of James Cameron's movies. In both cases, the directors themselves decided to cut scenes for cinematic pacing, and keep them for home viewing.
@@mjburrage5263 The removed footage might just be to lower the rating; I always defer to more nudity vs. less. Well, outside of Disney and Pixar movies.
I really really did not like One Hour Photo. Then I read the director's cut was better. I watched it and the movie wasn't so choppy.
Cuts for theatrical releases are not always for artistic reasons.
The complete opposite of stripes is "full metal jacket "
ya think?!?!? lol
Great reaction my wife and I were laughing alot
Please watch “Heavy Metal”. John Candy and a few other actors from Stripes did voice work for it. It’s triply as hell and your reactions would be priceless
Both Stripes and Heavy Metal were produced around the same time and came out within the summer of 1981.
The problem that Stripes has is that it’s really two movies in one.
Yep. Love everything before the RV. Meh after that.
Love this so much. You're awesome. I'm telling you, "Spies Like Us" is in this same genre. Chevy Chase and Dan Akroyd. You will love it so much.
This was my favourite comedy growing up.
Lost in Translation! A classic. Bill Murray letting his acting chops soar!
Excellent movie. Once Murray made a sort of comeback in "Rushmore" he was really on top of his acting form. "Rushmore" got him to act in a much wider spectrum to include dramatic, feeling parts which he perfected in "Lost in Translation." I wish Murray would have won the Best Actor Oscar, but Sean Penn got it for a great performance in "Mystic River" that year.
You knew the song that starts "There she was just a walkin' down the street..."! It was an oldie when this movie came out, but so many at the time thought it was original to the movie. Similar to those about a decade younger thinking that Bohemian Rhapsody came from Wayne's World.
you may want to go down stairs to sleep, it will be cooler down there, hot air rises and colder falls, and if it STILL gets too hot, take your fan and put it in the door, then go in to the bath tub, and cover your legs with water, but you may want to take a blanket with you because it will get a little chilly, i learned this little trick after dealing with the aftermath of hurricanes and no power, you may also notice it will get a little hard to breathe, BUT, that would depend on the humidity, 85-95 degrees at night and 100 percent humidity, yeah, it gets a little hard to breathe, it is like taking a drink of water with each breath.
