I literally came in the comments to ask that. I've never seen a commander that references a red permanent that makes it legal a boros commander.

You should look up the commander collor identity rules. Several things determine a cards color identiy for commander that are different than just the cards colors@@Grief111

Near the beginning of his journey, he took on Bolas solo and won.

Mostly, solo, he did draw upon the power of the Maelstrom and just made Bolas fight himself, but the end result was the same. He’s my 2nd fave Walker.
As a YGO player im honestly just shocked there are mtg characters people care about lmao. Granted we're a spoiled multimedia empire with tons of video games, feature films, merch, 25 years of iconic TV with beloved characters, books with 100 million copies sold etc
Massive cultural impact (sent x to the shadow realm, you activated my trap card, blue eyes white privilege, dark magician girl miniskirt, egyptian gods, exodia obliterate, millenium items, its time to duel, dark signers, tier 0 format, heart of the cards, what does pot of greed do, etc) wheras i honestly don't even know what the most culturally impactful MTG thing is lmao. The gap is that huge
So even seeing people care about this cat thing doing another thing is kinda changing my preconceived notion that literally nobody cares about anything MTG related outside of the game

Some parts of the lore are actually pretty well made, especially when it comes to worldbuilding and building up villain hype, less when its about ending a story in a satisfying way.
I think wizards (more importantly Hasbro) are just seeing how many OP cards they can print before they drive this game into the ground.

Yeah this is a reference to before he got his spark. His brother is in the background of the front side. And when his brother died, that's when ajanis spark ignited. Which is why he flips when a cat creature dies.
Finally they give Ajani his red mana back, even if its only in the past. He's hoping they finally give us a proper Naya Ajani one day, its literally his home
I really hope we get more Brothers War era stuff with these prequel cards in the future

It seems very good in just aggro in general. Two mana for a 2/1 and a 1/2 and if they kill the (more threatening) 2/1 without killing the 1/2 you get a decently powerful aggressive planeswalker
This is interesting as it doesn't have the same vibe as the old origin story flip planswalkers. It gives us hope that more of the fallen ones will regain their sparks...

Friendly reminder that turn 1 Mass Hysteria (or the other one red mana universal haste) means three damage on turn 2 and will have a Red permanent to satisfy the back side's 0 ability. Meaning if his first cat ever dies (I hope you don't ping the board for 1 or sac a creature, or swing it into blockers), 0 can just stack cats every turn while dealing progressively more damage to gun down your blockers.

I still wish he was Naya, rather than Boros, but at least with Boros, I can still use cards like Assemble the Legion and Ojer Taq with him. But no Jinnie Fey to make the Soldier Tokens for AtL into Cat Tokers that would trigger Nacatl Pariah’s condition to transform when they die. And get the boost from the +2 of the Nacatl Avenger.
Now I wanna see what kind of EDH decks people are already brewing with Cat Dad.

I love this powerful Ajanni, but I wish they made him Naya so we could have a Naya Ajanni commander and include all his planeswalker cards.
Also, Alanni being our first Naya commander would just feel right.

For 2 mana repeatedly making 2/1s that on occassion removes/ does face damage is really good
Does anyone else remember the last time we had a planeswalker that had a non-minus removal ability?
Don't forget you can have two on the field simultaneously as long as the first one is flipped. Kinda wild because if you have a huge board you cam just zero a couple times for face and win
This is perfect for my guff deck it's a red white blue deck and the commander is a planeswalker It is big minus 3 is deal x damaged to each opponent where x is the number of planeswalkers you control and I have a thing that lets me activated abilities as though they were instants
It may be a Boros commander or a 99 pump in Rin and Seri, but I’m going to throw it into my Jeskai planeswalker deck. Commodore Guff could use the extra body generator for 2 MANA
Goes into Rin and Seri pretty well or Jinnie Fay. with Jinnie all your 2/1 cats are 2/2 with haste and he buffs all your cats after. Seems like an auto include

If anything this is slightly better version of the origins flip walkers.
Oko was busted because it had a +1 that was repeatable removal, a +2 that was sustain, and a minus 5 that stole permanents

@@volk551 not when you are tapped out turn 2 lol, which is really the only time this thing is powerful. Remember this is MH3, if it were a standard set I'd agree this card would be nuts, but for modern this card is not that good lol.

This is absolutely INSANE!! I would’ve been happy paying 3 mana for the first side or 5 mana for the back side. Instead it’s a double whammy for a measly TWO MANA!! Not even anything super specific at that! One generic and one white!! Can’t get much better than that!!

And I can say that since I have 2 5-color planewalker decks, each running over 40 different planeswalkers and all oaths…and carth the lion with the new ichormoon guantlets……oath of tef/chain veil…..ouch
This seems so broken to me lol. Drop this on two as a commander, flip it the next turn and plus two it, then tuen four you can either just -4 it if someone is moving fast and after thst you should be able to protect it pretty easily, or just start using the 0 every turn to kill stuff and bulid your bord.
Oath of terefi or chain veil would make that ajani broken as hell
For some reason i did not consider that this planeswalker was only 2 mana. Holy crap this thing is busted. Just spam the zero ability and you have a token creator with stapled removal on it on each of your turns. And even if they kill it, you will have earned back more than the value from casting it after activating it once
With the right set up you can cast, flip and ultimate him in the same turn. At worse this is a 2 mana one-sided Cataclysmic Gearhulk two turns later. He's insanely strong. Still don't see it getting much play.
Sometimes you just look down and go...oh ok they made that for rin and seri. Only half way kidding a 2 drop that flips to produce more tokens seems decent

People will want to play this card and be heartbroken when it gets slapped off the battlefield. That asymmetrical ability says "Kill me constantly!"
2 mana but you still need to get the cat token or another cat to die which might prove a challenge as opponents can just remove ajani first

So this is Ajani before phyrexia and how he got his spark. I suppose the other warrior thats with him is his brother or very close friend so when it dies his spark is ignited and he is blinded by rage so he absorbs red mana and destroy everything in its path.
FLAVOR
That is a lot slapped onto one card. Baseline 3/3 stats across two bodies for two mana, a powerful planeswalker that grows your board with removal attached and can ult the turn after he flips if you plus him. Too bad aggressive creature decks are bad in modern, my guess is he sees no play after initial testing.

Good value here, although it gets hosed pretty easily. If you can't get the extra value on the +0, it really drags this card down, and the +2 is absolutely terrible unless you are playing cat tribal. The -4 ability is interesting, but let's your opponent choose what to keep. It sounds incredible until you realize how dependant these abilities are on what your opponent is doing. Some matchups, this will be a solid 2 drop that will give you exceptional value if left unchecked. In other matchups, it is a mild 2 drop that. Look at it this way, a control player probably won't counter this.

Yeah I’m completely sure this card is extremely busted. Doesn’t get much better than a 2 mana 3/3 split across 2 bodies, and this is much better than that. Obviously has sacrifice synergies, but the 2/1 is already a great chump attacker/defender since your opponent doesn’t want Ajani to flip. What I find most funny about this card however, is how well it combos with itself. Since Ajani is a legend, you’ll need to sacrifice 1 copy of him when the 2nd copy enters the battlefield. But the 2nd copy will create a second 2/1 (which isn’t legendary btw) and when you sacrifice one Ajani the other will flip. That will leave you your choice of a 5 loyalty Ajani and 2 3/2’s or a 3 loyalty Ajani, some amount of damage, and 3 2/1’s. All for the low, low price of 2WW and 2 cards.

Still, a decent number of hoops to jump through- even after the banning of Fury. Are there any "go wide but also cat & boros" decks in modern(/vintage/legacy) right now? One of the reasons I don't love modern, despite a lot of cool cards, is that WOTC knows how optimized the ceiling is - so they can just chuck interesting, powerful, but not quite powerful enough cards into the MH void.
In those formats there aren't any deck on that style unfortunately. Actually, the closest I can think of is Pioneer UW control lol, because half of the creature sb options happen to be cats (kutzil's flanker, brimaz, regal caracal, which if you don't run any noncat creature in sb, means you can run Kaheera) which is hilarious imo. Really unfortunate that the card is printed into a MH set, I wanted so much a tuned down standard legal version on an extinct core annual set, it would prob be great to cats tribal
There has never been an Ajani that wasn’t completely busted and unfair to play against
So, now I have three reasons to hate that fuckin cat. First he did life gain bullshit, then he backstabbed Jaya when we'd _just_ got her back into the story, and now he's committinf war crimes in Boros.
So wait that -4 is sacs each "nonland permenent" correct? So if i stuff this in my Golos deck that just so happens to run Doubling season, maskwood nexus and tergrid. I could force each of my opponents to pick which one of their non-lands to give me
