    I'm not going to lie. The first thing that I learned from this video, was that you could just lower the mechanism to snap the foot on! You don't know how long I have been fumbling to hold the foot in just the right position to push it in! lol

    Glad to help! For a rolled hem on chiffon - if you notice the fabric starting to unravel, stabilize the hem with a thin strip of light interfacing or stabilizer. It'll make sure the extra thread weight doesn't compromise the finished hem. Good luck!

    Hi Green Wood! Yup, you can definitely use zig zag in place of overcast. The overcast stitch mimics a serger stitch in that it effectively prevents the raw edges from fraying too badly. A zig zag foot is a fine alternative. It's not as neat and organized as an overcast stitch, but it works well!

    You just saved my life! I was about to buy a rolled rem foot for my chiffon skirts that I am working on, and realized that my machine came with other feet that I haven't used, one of them being an overcasting foot! I didn't want to have to hand roll the edges for fear of them not being neat, but you have just made my life easier. Thanks!

    Hi Lynda! I did miss your comment, thank you for reposting! We have very similar machines. If you're trying to create the stitch shown on the prequilted fabric, I suggest using a 90/14 needle and Gutermann thread- works great in brother machines. And switch to stitch number 12 or 11. If you're talking about the hem created on the polka dot fabric, that was a narrow zigzag stitch and wooly nylon thread. Bring the stitch length down to 0.9 and you'll get a thick border hem. Does that help at all?

    Great video! I just bought a Brother after fighting with my 25+ year old Elna. I've been having fun but I am having trouble with overcasting. I've followed your example but don't get the heavy edging you do. Also, I'm working on felt pages (quiet book) so the fabric seems to move. I'm using just Dual duty thread. I'm wondering if that is my problem. Love that you showed how to attach the foot! I think I'm making this machine harder than it is!

    Hi Sarah,
    What a great video showing how to use the overcast foot. I love how it can make fabric edges look nice. Now I notice that you are using thread that looks variegated as your seam is orchid and white. That isn't the top thread and the bobbin thread, is it? Is it a specialty thread that looks variegated?

    I'm wondering if you could answer a question for me. I have a Brother CS6000i which came with an overcast foot. My question is about fabric and what would be best. I'm going to be sewing 100% cotton Muslin cloth and want to do an overcast stitch since I don't own a Serger. I liked the look of the overcast zig-zag. Would that stitch work for this fabric? It's not very thick fabric either. If this would work for that than what stitch length would work best to get the same look as on your fabric, that slight rolled look?

    Cool tricks you can do with the overcast foot! My question is... how do you make sure your stitches are locked or knotted at the beginning and end? I can't seem to find the answer anywhere. My machine won't reverse & you can't turn the material around with out pulling it off the foot. So how do you lock your overcast seams?

    • @SewingPartsOnline
      @SewingPartsOnline  7 років тому +2

      Hi! If your machine doesn't reverse, you can reduce your stitch length to zero (or as low as it will go) and sew three stitches. Those three stitches will lock in the stitches. Simply turn your stitch length back up and sew. Good luck!

    Thanks for the video. I found it because I need a blanket stitch for my fleece blankets. Will this work on fleece and Is it easy to do curves with these stitches?

    • @SewingPartsOnline
      @SewingPartsOnline  9 років тому

      Hi iadol ! It can definitely be used on fleece, as long as you have decent feed dogs. If you find your machine isn't feeding the fleece well, you can do a blanket stitch with a walking foot installed, which is great for sewing fleece. It also works on curves just like a standard presser foot; maybe even a bit better because the overcast stitch is a little slower to sew.

  • @bigdaddyS289

    I am very new to sewing so these may seem like silly questions but here goes. I love the look of a finished seam especially the overcast stitch. First question is, when doing the overlock stitch, with the overcast foot, do I overcast all the edges on all the individual pieces before I sew any seams together? I'm just wondering because my pattern says to iron the seams open and if I sew/overcast them together then I can't press them open. My second question is since my machine is a regular machine and doesn't cut the excess fabric off, if I overlock it's not going to be at the typical 5/8 seam allowance so won't my garment then be too large? I hope this makes sense. Thank you, Cindy

    • @SewingPartsOnline
      @SewingPartsOnline  10 років тому +3

      Hi Rich! Welcome to the wonderful world of sewing! You're questions aren't silly at all - sewing can be very confusing. So, for the first question - you can do either. However, since your pattern wants the seams pressed open, you would overcast each raw edge individually so the seams can be pressed open. Second question - here is what I recommend for your pattern. First, overcast all the raw edges to prevent them from fraying. Then, sewing the pattern pieces together with a straight stitch (i'm assuming you are sewing a woven) using a 5/8 inch seam allowance (I assume the pattern calls for a 5/8th seam allowance). That way, you have the right seam allowance, your raw edges are finished, and you can still press the seams open. Feel free to ask more questions if anything is unclear. Good luck!

      Kimberley Gamble Hi! In this video, I'm using a Brother LB6800 PRW edition. It's a great, fun machine! I've broken so many needles, I cant remember if I broke one using the overcast foot or not, but I'm sure I did! I usually double check my needle position by manually turning the hand wheel - especially with a complex foot - but I've forgotten a fair few times. Breaking needles is just part of sewing - sometimes you under estimate how thick your fabric is or set a zig zag too wide - it happens! No worries =)

    So for the rolled hem, are you just changing the stitch, or do I see you letting the fabric ride up on the guide? I am pseudo-serging some floor sack towels, and I'm getting good results by letting the fabric ride up on the guide. I was looking for a video like this to see if I'm not abusing anything by doing that, or missing a better way :)
    When I "properly" overcast across the grain, with the cut edge nicely aligned to the foot's guide, I can see all the little weft threads poking out like a bad buzz cut :)
    Thanks!

      I did reduce the stitch length and the tension significantly. Go with whatever works for you and your machine. I've found that with sewing, you always have to make slight adjustments based on the thread you're using, the fabric, and the machine. As long as it's working, keep with it!

    Thanks for the demo, very helpful and good ideas. I have an unrelated question to the foot. Its about the lite you have attached to your machine. I have one as well, purchased it last year at a quilting show, however, it has just now gone on the fritz. I thought they were supposed to last forever! Has yours died yet? Is there a battery or bulb replacement (I dont have the packaging any longer). Thanks.

      There's nothing to replace but it should've came with a warranty. I'd contact the manufacturer for a replacement.

    I just opened my new Brother computerized machine, and have never had a machine with an overcast stitch. it is bunching when I try to turn the fabric. Can you not turn fabric when overcasting?! Thanks for help.

    Can you use an overcast foot if your machine doesn’t have an overcast stitch setting? I need to know!
