I was born in 95, that said I spent my teens emulating classic games such as these. I’m the only person I know who loves arcades and actively miss them. Love hearing your background on these games and adds such a personal touch to games I admittedly haven’t always heard of. People just don’t really understand playing a few okay or bad games, to then experience the elation of a real classic. Don’t change, there’s a reason your channel blew up.
We didn’t have a lot of money growing up, so I remember walking around the arcade and seeing which screens/cabinets were worth playing. Limited quarters/tokens didn’t allow me to ‘continue’ past most first or second levels. Luckily, all games back then were only 1 quarter/token. The first game I always sought out was the original, vector-based Star Wars game 🥰
I miss the days of roaming the arcades looking for a beat em up for me or asking another kid or a teenager if they would play virtua cop with me and when my mom couldn't afford to leave me some change for the arcade on the weekend or let me rent something for my sega, I could always get $1 or so from her if I helped her bring stuff to the laundrymat a block from our house that had Rastan, Centipede, Outrun, and Mortal Kombat in the back
Stars wars was a good game…it was kinda old by 85 86 but it felt good to hold that 2 hand controls. Felt like being a real pilot. And yes it wasn’t brutal difficult so you could last for a bit
As a kid I had an arcade cabinet of Nintendo's version of The Goonies. I played the hell out of that thing till my dad got rid of it. I think that's the only arcade video game he ever got, but he's got thousands of pinball machines. A lot of his friends during that era had arcade cabinets. I remember going over this one guy's place for some after hours back room deals... the place was one of the biggest stand alone arcades in the state. He'd turn on a bunch of cabinets for me to play for free while they where wheeling & dealing. Street Fighter 2, Mortal Kombat 2, etc. I had free reign.
Donkey Kong 3 is the direct-to-video sequel where the original star is so famous now, they can no longer afford to hire them with the budget they have. As for weak arcade sequels, I'd say Wonderboy III is a bit "meh" way too long and boring, possibly why called a completely different game Wonder Boy 3 for the home release.
I was too young to play the first two donkey Kongs in the arcade. I played them on the 2600. But I do remember playing the third and it was one of my first arcade experiences so I can't help love it.
For me the ultimate arcade disapointment was Mortal Kombat 4. I remember my mom driving on the highway, and seeing a cab on a flatbed truck, no doubt headed to the local mall arcade. I was there the next day, and waited about 15 minuted to play and I hated it instantly. I kept trying to convince myself it was good over the next few months, but just kept my dark secret from my friends who were always talking about how great MK4 was.
My problem with that game was there was no monster sub boss, and the final boss (Shinnok) copied every other fighters moves ( like a thematically lamer Shang Tsung).
I felt the same way when I played UMK3 the first time. When I first played MK4 in the arcade it blew me away. Now I think UMK3 is one of the best and MK4 not so much.
@@caucasoidape8838 fighting games aren’t made to fight AI. The AI in mk has always been input reading, money stealing trash. I would never put a coin in an mk machine just to play AI. Though there were easy patterns to use to beat the game on one life, it wasn’t fun in the slightest.
I heard that the main reason on why Haunted Castle is such a major departure from the Castlevania series is because it started out as a completely different arcade game during the first stages of development, up until Konami completely retooled it into a Castlevania game
Certainly. The project was initially being developed as an original horror action game unrelated to the Castlevania series. However, at some point around six months into development, the game was in bad shape, quality and schedule-wise, with the team being short-staffed. Konami's higher-ups ordered people who were working on a completely different project (a racing game called "Hot Chase") to help out with this one; among them was Masaaki Kukino, who attained the role of main designer. As the graphics were considered to be too low on quality, it was decided by the company to redraw all the assets in one month, along with making the game in the style of the Akumajō Dracula/Castlevania series, which Kukino speculates was simply chosen for name recognition value only. The tight schedule left no room for any big additions or changes, although the concept of the crumbling bridge in the last stage was conceived during that stage of development. In a later interview, Kukino said that time for debugging was also needed, which resulted in the staff having no more room to make changes and improvements to the balancing. Furthermore, at that time the staff members from Hot Chase had returned to their own project already.
Originally when the SNK and Capcom crossover was created, it was planned that both companies create their own vision of it with their own gameplay and style and release both games at the same time. The one name started with Capcom Vs should have their style and the other one with SNK Vs should have their style. But someone SNK didn't managed to make it in time, as it the company was in trouble at that time. That is why the later appearance of the game looks so alien to you, because that is intentional. I remember when I read about the collaboration back then and was stoked that two games will be released at the same time, like Pokemon Red and Blue, but with games being different. With that marketing, people would see it very differently. So I do not see SVC Chaos as s disappointment, I am glad it is like it is intended to be. Hopefully you will view this a bit differently in the future (not changing your mind, just understand how this happened).
I don't think so. While this is okay, this is still disappointing and even members of SNK criticized this game. Heck, there's even issues with the characterization of certain Capcom characters so if that was intentional, well good job messing with their personalities along with their movesets and difficulty because they don't feel as good as the previous crossovers. And they did a great job with Match of the Millenium along with the Card Fighters series which was like Pokemon with the different versions.

Very nice video! Yeah, I'd love to see a console/handheld version of this series. It is interesting to see the ups and downs of many classic series. I recall playing Donkey Kong 3 and Haunted Castle way back when. Both games shocked me with just how inferior they were to the other games in the series. There is no surprise as to why we haven't seen the return of Stanley the Bugman!
This was really fun! I'd be happy to see a similar sequel to this with more arcade games, as well as versions for the games on the major consoles that you talk about.

Out of all games that you mentioned, I think SNK vs Capcom Chaos deserves some sympathy from me. Sure the AI bosses were tough but it has got some great pre-battle dialogues which was really cool. Also, aren't anyone going to talk about the fact that the heads of the Virtua Fighter kids are way too big? Like dang, how do they even pull off their moves in the first place?
Some duds there for sure but guessing that I may be of the very few in the comments that really enjoyed DK3 in the arcade. I recall coming across it and playing the heck out of it at a ski resort. It kept my attention so much that I don’t even remember if I skied that day. I sill enjoy playing the NES version to this day.
out of the thousands of arcade games I've played while developing MAME, Peter Pepper's Ice Cream Factory has remained in my top 5, it's one of my all time favourites, so kinda surprised to see it here.

Hey @Sega Lord X, would it be possible to do a video called "Sega on PlayStation 1"? I did saw there was a video mentioned that he found two Sega titles released for the PSX in Japan. Puyo Puyo Tsu and an obscured title called MiniMoni. Shakatto Tambourine! Dapyon! that was never been created for other Sega Consoles.
I believe puyo puyo was still developed by compile at the time and wasn’t purchased by sega yet but I can be wrong. With mini moni I believe that was a late ps1 game and sega already called it quits in the console market at that point and already was a third party developer.
Rastan 2 and arcade castlevania look so much alike in regards of how chunky the gfx are and how slow they play, that it is as if the same team developed them...
Donkey Kong 3 is pretty fun in my book. As a weird shooter instead of a platformer, it's definitely different, but I never regret giving it a play. Could use one or two more stages, though.
It's not underrated at all. Game has been properly rated by the community: It's a game with interesting gameplay and design ideas, dragged down by a very rushed and conflictive development. It's VERY unbalanced, it has a lot of really stupid crap that shouldn't be there (as if the game didn't go through any beta testing), heavy recycling from the SNK side (without any update), 50% of the backgrounds were horrible, the music was forgettable... and I could go on.
I actually loved SVC Chaos. I thought it was super cool to see SF characters in that art style. You're right though it's far from perfect. Felt dated even when it was released
I'd say it was better than Capcom vs. SNK 1 but inferior to Capcom vs. SNK 2. Having said that, at least SNK delivered on its half of a crossover, which is more than you can say for Namco with Tekken vs. Street Fighter. When's that coming out again, Namco?

at a buffet, i personally sneak corndogs into the buffet so others can enjoy them. I hide 6 corndogs in my jacket pockets. it then, is a joy for me to see other patrons of the establishment eat my corndogs thinking they were part of the buffet.

Great video as ever 🙂 Agreed SVC Chaos is just an ok game especially compared to the previous entries. SVC Plus & SVC Super Plus are slightly better I play those occasionally.
The AI and the balancing issues hurt the most. There are some fighters that can use just a move or two and dog you out unless you know what you are doing.
@@SegaLordX Agreed especially the AI part, one of the most unbalanced fighting games i played, i hated the fact that it lacked air guards especially given the choice of certain playable characters, also no advanced blocking feature & more. Garou is my favourite fighting game different calibre compared to this mess.
@Green Koopa - I actually don't have any issues beating it. But using some of the weaker cast is tough in multiplayer or the higher difficulty settings.

I always loved the theme of DK3. In the jungle, trying to knock him into a beehive, while swatting away all the other jungle bugs. Makes perfect sense in a game about fighting a giant gorilla.
I really enjoyed this video! Half the games you mentioned, I'd seen and also felt disappointed. It's nice to see this collection because I kind of forgot about them as soon as I shuffled away from the cabinet.

There's a Polygon retrospective on Capcom vs SNK, which mentions SvC Chaos briefly, but weirdly has more screenshots of it than the Capcom CvS games. I thought it was really funny how the comments were in awe over how good the SvC Chaos screens were, thinking it was the Capcom game. As hard as people were on it at the time, it may have aged the best visually.
It's usually the other way round' when the Arcade game comes to console it's usually a let down in some cases. I enjoyed it and would subscribe for more of these videos. You're the best segalordx!

I love Donkey Kong 3. 😍 It's not as good as 1 & 2, but it's a nice little game in its own right. It's not a bad game by any means, but quite different from the first 2. I can play it any day, and do play it from time to time on my Switch.
i do remember seeing a professor pac-man once when i was a kid. i read once that only 400 were made for a test to see if they would do good & if so more would of been made but luckily it failed miserably so no more were made & around 200 of those test cabs were converted to pac-land.

We’re about the same age with a lot of the same experiences growing up going to arcades. I absolutely loved Donkey Kong 3. Easily my favorite of the 3 in the arcades. Civilization peaked in the 80s, so glad I was a teen during that time
I remember reading somewhere that the point of VF Kids was facial animation exercise for AM2 but ended up turning the exercise into a whole game (VF Kids).
@@SegaLordX considering they they animations were sprite based while 3D was clearly the future, yeah, I can definitely see that point. It wouldn’t necessarily help that much with animating in 3D for the likes of VF3 and Shenmue.
Such a fantastic time to witness the rise of a new entertainment medium, sad younger generations don't get this treatment. Every second day something new to discover, loved it and still miss those days where gaming was pure nerd stuff.
I have a honorable mention for this list, Ikari Warriors 3. There series went from beloved shoot 'em up to abysmal wierd eight way rotation joystick of death that had an insatiable appetite for tour hard earned quarters. There is no "A" for effort for that game.
DK3 is really a shooter instead of a platformer. If you approach it that way, it really is a fun game :) I have all three DK's in a DK Jr cabinet, and Jr is my favorite of the trio.
I love Donkey Kong 3 and have the Arcade version on my Switch and the NES version on my 2DS. It's such a fun game that gets a lot of unfair hate because it's so different from the first two games.
To think that Donkey Kong and Mario would have never existed, if Nintendo had managed to get permission to use the characters from the Popeye cartoons, on that first DK game. Which was supposed to be a Popeye game. That's why Pauline looks like Olive Oyl. And Donkey Kong was a replacement for Bluto. Videogame History does have its epic moments as well. In which a small, even negative detail, can change things drastically, forever and for the better. Later on Sony benefited from the Game Gods as well, and Nintendo got a taste of its own bad karma ahah.
That is an interesting tidbit. Nintendo eventually did get the Popeye license, must have been due to the success of Donkey Kong. I wonder how long it took them to come up with the concepts for that one.

I actually liked Donkey Kong 3. As a kid I was bad at the original, but i could get past the first 3 stages of the arcade game of Donkey Kong 3. So i have a soft spot for it.
I actually skipped Metal Slug 2 and had played the X version instead as I had heard about the horrible slowdown in 2. It looks nearly unplayable in some instances and looks to really ruin the flow of the game. That is really a shame. I assume time constraints and budget had a hand in why SNK didn't go back to optimize the original release.
Great video! Someone made a patch to greatly improve the slow down on Metal Slug 2. Would it be MS 3 is on the MS X engine with the order they were released?
Good to hear your thoughts on an interesting topic, as usual. I definitely agree with you on Virtua Fighter Kids being pointless for the most part. I realize the title means it is for kids, but it's still weird seeing that old man in super deformed style all kiddie looking. Metal Slug 2 is a good starter entry in the series. It's the easiest one by far since they limited the chaos to reduce the slowdown. Though it's not nearly as much as part two, I was surprised how much slowdown is in the first game too. I've long suspected that Nazca just didn't know the Neo Geo and 68000 hardware well enough for those first two entries, having come from doing GunForce for Irem on boards using the V30 CPU. At least they got the optimization down after Slug 2. As for SvC Chaos, it's definitely flawed, but I have a soft spot for it. I had issues with Capcom's Capcom vs. SNK games too. I just loved the SNK style from that time. Seeing the game on the Neo Geo felt right to me. I really loved the SNK versions of the Capcom sprites, though, to be fair, Capcom's sprites were good too, and I wasn't a fan of their Alpha and SF3 style. I actually wanted the game to play even more like King of Fighters than it does. I liked a lot of the character interactions. I also like the boss concepts. Athena was easier to figure out than the Arremer. But, there's no denying it;s flawed. It really is a shame it was in development when SNK was having all those problems. I think it would have been even better if it was done sooner.
Haunted Castle is a huge hunka. I hate how Simon walks like he shit himself. I get that it was still a few years away from the true Castlevania classics, like 3, 4 on the SNES, and Bloodlines, but the control on Haunted Castle and the insane difficulty just scuttles what could have been an all time classic.
I wasn't a big fan of the one on one fighting games but I did follow each release of Mortal Kombat growing up. The first one was amazing for it's time. In fact, I ended up getting my first computer and the original Mortal Kombat was one of my first computer games. Mortal Kombat 2 is the best in the series in my opinion with three having an interesting premise and story and a dash feature. Then along came Mortal Kombat 4 and I think the developers knew that Mortal Kombat and Virtua Fighter don't mix. What's worse was the Playstation version, which I own, and the cut scenes are some of the most laughable. Mortal Kombat Annihilation laughable. Still it introduced Quan Chi and I actually liked that character.
I wish everyone understood that. I really tried to ram home the point that these weren't necessarily bad games in every case. They just weren't as great as the series could be.
I thought Ikari warriors on the nes was the worst port of all time. I was a kid and had played ikari in arcades and was so excited to play it at home, couldn’t beat it until I saw in a magazine you had to press A,B,B,A. That game felt like it was 10 hours long for 4 levels. Still hurts that I payed for that crap today

I like both SVC: Chaos and SVC: Match of the Millennium(NGPC). But I do give the edge to CVS2 over both.

Very nice video! Yeah, I'd love to see a console/handheld version of this series. It is interesting to see the ups and downs of many classic series.
I recall playing Donkey Kong 3 and Haunted Castle way back when. Both games shocked me with just how inferior they were to the other games in the series. There is no surprise as to why we haven't seen the return of Stanley the Bugman!

Out of all games that you mentioned, I think SNK vs Capcom Chaos deserves some sympathy from me. Sure the AI bosses were tough but it has got some great pre-battle dialogues which was really cool.
Also, aren't anyone going to talk about the fact that the heads of the Virtua Fighter kids are way too big? Like dang, how do they even pull off their moves in the first place?
Some duds there for sure but guessing that I may be of the very few in the comments that really enjoyed DK3 in the arcade. I recall coming across it and playing the heck out of it at a ski resort. It kept my attention so much that I don’t even remember if I skied that day. I sill enjoy playing the NES version to this day.
out of the thousands of arcade games I've played while developing MAME, Peter Pepper's Ice Cream Factory has remained in my top 5, it's one of my all time favourites, so kinda surprised to see it here.

Hey @Sega Lord X, would it be possible to do a video called "Sega on PlayStation 1"? I did saw there was a video mentioned that he found two Sega titles released for the PSX in Japan. Puyo Puyo Tsu and an obscured title called MiniMoni. Shakatto Tambourine! Dapyon! that was never been created for other Sega Consoles.
I believe puyo puyo was still developed by compile at the time and wasn’t purchased by sega yet but I can be wrong. With mini moni I believe that was a late ps1 game and sega already called it quits in the console market at that point and already was a third party developer.

Rastan 2 and arcade castlevania look so much alike in regards of how chunky the gfx are and how slow they play, that it is as if the same team developed them...

Donkey Kong 3 is pretty fun in my book. As a weird shooter instead of a platformer, it's definitely different, but I never regret giving it a play. Could use one or two more stages, though.

SVC Chaos is an underrated game IMO, I like the in game character sprites, still waiting for Arcade Archive Neo Geo port on Xbox One.

It's a game with interesting gameplay and design ideas, dragged down by a very rushed and conflictive development.
It's VERY unbalanced, it has a lot of really stupid crap that shouldn't be there (as if the game didn't go through any beta testing), heavy recycling from the SNK side (without any update), 50% of the backgrounds were horrible, the music was forgettable... and I could go on.

I actually loved SVC Chaos. I thought it was super cool to see SF characters in that art style. You're right though it's far from perfect. Felt dated even when it was released
it was so broken in the arcades. U could never get past round 2 or 3. But man was it fun as a pvp game.
I'd say it was better than Capcom vs. SNK 1 but inferior to Capcom vs. SNK 2. Having said that, at least SNK delivered on its half of a crossover, which is more than you can say for Namco with Tekken vs. Street Fighter. When's that coming out again, Namco?

Great video as ever 🙂 Agreed SVC Chaos is just an ok game especially compared to the previous entries. SVC Plus & SVC Super Plus are slightly better I play those occasionally.
The AI and the balancing issues hurt the most. There are some fighters that can use just a move or two and dog you out unless you know what you are doing.
@@SegaLordX Agreed especially the AI part, one of the most unbalanced fighting games i played, i hated the fact that it lacked air guards especially given the choice of certain playable characters, also no advanced blocking feature & more. Garou is my favourite fighting game different calibre compared to this mess.

I always loved the theme of DK3. In the jungle, trying to knock him into a beehive, while swatting away all the other jungle bugs. Makes perfect sense in a game about fighting a giant gorilla.

There's a Polygon retrospective on Capcom vs SNK, which mentions SvC Chaos briefly, but weirdly has more screenshots of it than the Capcom CvS games.
I thought it was really funny how the comments were in awe over how good the SvC Chaos screens were, thinking it was the Capcom game. As hard as people were on it at the time, it may have aged the best visually.
It's usually the other way round' when the Arcade game comes to console it's usually a let down in some cases. I enjoyed it and would subscribe for more of these videos. You're the best segalordx!

I can play it any day, and do play it from time to time on my Switch.
i do remember seeing a professor pac-man once when i was a kid. i read once that only 400 were made for a test to see if they would do good & if so more would of been made but luckily it failed miserably so no more were made & around 200 of those test cabs were converted to pac-land.
Haunted Castle was tough as nails, and where Mario's gun been everytime Bowser broke into his house and stole Peach

Rastan 2! I remember seeing that in the arcades and feeling exactly the same as you did. Weird art direction. The main character looked like he has to go for a number 2.
We’re about the same age with a lot of the same experiences growing up going to arcades.
I absolutely loved Donkey Kong 3. Easily my favorite of the 3 in the arcades.
Civilization peaked in the 80s, so glad I was a teen during that time
I remember reading somewhere that the point of VF Kids was facial animation exercise for AM2 but ended up turning the exercise into a whole game (VF Kids).
They said similar with Funky Head Boxers, another incredible waste of developer resources.
@@SegaLordX considering they they animations were sprite based while 3D was clearly the future, yeah, I can definitely see that point. It wouldn’t necessarily help that much with animating in 3D for the likes of VF3 and Shenmue.

Every second day something new to discover, loved it and still miss those days where gaming was pure nerd stuff.
I have a honorable mention for this list, Ikari Warriors 3. There series went from beloved shoot 'em up to abysmal wierd eight way rotation joystick of death that had an insatiable appetite for tour hard earned quarters. There is no "A" for effort for that game.
DK3 is really a shooter instead of a platformer. If you approach it that way, it really is a fun game :) I have all three DK's in a DK Jr cabinet, and Jr is my favorite of the trio.
I love Donkey Kong 3 and have the Arcade version on my Switch and the NES version on my 2DS.
It's such a fun game that gets a lot of unfair hate because it's so different from the first two games.
Loved SvC Chaos, it stood apart on its own two legs from the other games.

To think that Donkey Kong and Mario would have never existed, if Nintendo had managed to get permission to use the characters from the Popeye cartoons, on that first DK game. Which was supposed to be a Popeye game. That's why Pauline looks like Olive Oyl. And Donkey Kong was a replacement for Bluto. Videogame History does have its epic moments as well. In which a small, even negative detail, can change things drastically, forever and for the better. Later on Sony benefited from the Game Gods as well, and Nintendo got a taste of its own bad karma ahah.
That is an interesting tidbit. Nintendo eventually did get the Popeye license, must have been due to the success of Donkey Kong.
I wonder how long it took them to come up with the concepts for that one.

I actually liked Donkey Kong 3. As a kid I was bad at the original, but i could get past the first 3 stages of the arcade game of Donkey Kong 3. So i have a soft spot for it.

I actually skipped Metal Slug 2 and had played the X version instead as I had heard about the horrible slowdown in 2. It looks nearly unplayable in some instances and looks to really ruin the flow of the game. That is really a shame. I assume time constraints and budget had a hand in why SNK didn't go back to optimize the original release.

Good to hear your thoughts on an interesting topic, as usual. I definitely agree with you on Virtua Fighter Kids being pointless for the most part. I realize the title means it is for kids, but it's still weird seeing that old man in super deformed style all kiddie looking. Metal Slug 2 is a good starter entry in the series. It's the easiest one by far since they limited the chaos to reduce the slowdown. Though it's not nearly as much as part two, I was surprised how much slowdown is in the first game too. I've long suspected that Nazca just didn't know the Neo Geo and 68000 hardware well enough for those first two entries, having come from doing GunForce for Irem on boards using the V30 CPU. At least they got the optimization down after Slug 2. As for SvC Chaos, it's definitely flawed, but I have a soft spot for it. I had issues with Capcom's Capcom vs. SNK games too. I just loved the SNK style from that time. Seeing the game on the Neo Geo felt right to me. I really loved the SNK versions of the Capcom sprites, though, to be fair, Capcom's sprites were good too, and I wasn't a fan of their Alpha and SF3 style. I actually wanted the game to play even more like King of Fighters than it does. I liked a lot of the character interactions. I also like the boss concepts. Athena was easier to figure out than the Arremer. But, there's no denying it;s flawed. It really is a shame it was in development when SNK was having all those problems. I think it would have been even better if it was done sooner.

Haunted Castle is a huge hunka. I hate how Simon walks like he shit himself. I get that it was still a few years away from the true Castlevania classics, like 3, 4 on the SNES, and Bloodlines, but the control on Haunted Castle and the insane difficulty just scuttles what could have been an all time classic.
Simon looks like he gained alot weight from eating at the buffet in that game

SVCC was cool to see Capcom characters as SNK sprites, plus some of the vs. dialogs were fun. The aging hardware showed, though.

I wasn't a big fan of the one on one fighting games but I did follow each release of Mortal Kombat growing up. The first one was amazing for it's time. In fact, I ended up getting my first computer and the original Mortal Kombat was one of my first computer games. Mortal Kombat 2 is the best in the series in my opinion with three having an interesting premise and story and a dash feature. Then along came Mortal Kombat 4 and I think the developers knew that Mortal Kombat and Virtua Fighter don't mix. What's worse was the Playstation version, which I own, and the cut scenes are some of the most laughable. Mortal Kombat Annihilation laughable. Still it introduced Quan Chi and I actually liked that character.
I love that ending where Scorpion pulls Quan Chi into his own portal, and he goes "Noooooooooooooooo!". lol
Donkey Kong 3 might not be good, but the monkey animations are hilarious. xD

I wish everyone understood that. I really tried to ram home the point that these weren't necessarily bad games in every case. They just weren't as great as the series could be.

I thought Ikari warriors on the nes was the worst port of all time. I was a kid and had played ikari in arcades and was so excited to play it at home, couldn’t beat it until I saw in a magazine you had to press A,B,B,A. That game felt like it was 10 hours long for 4 levels. Still hurts that I payed for that crap today
i liked the game a lot because i felt i was getting hours of entertainment out of it but it is such a waste of time.
